Purpose: To report the frequency of post glaucoma filtration surgery hypotonic maculopathy determined by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT).
Methods: A cross-sectional retrospective observational study. Post glaucoma filtration surgery patients whose intraocular pressures (IOP) achieved 30% reduction from baseline or was controlled to IOP <14 mm Hg and had SD-OCT images and fundus photographs were enrolled.

Summary: A 72-year-old man with no history of diabetes was referred to our department due to hyperglycemia during pembrolizumab treatment for non-small-cell lung carcinoma. His blood glucose level was 209 mg/dL, but he was not in a state of ketosis or ketoacidosis. Serum C-peptide levels persisted at first, but gradually decreased, and 18 days later, he was admitted to our hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

Purpose: To investigate anterior scleral canal (ASC) area in the eyes with glaucoma using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SDOCT).
Design: Cross-sectional study.
Methods: This study included 206 eyes of 103 patients with glaucoma, classified as 66 eyes of 33 patients with unilateral glaucoma and 140 eyes of 70 patients with bilateral glaucoma.

Background And Purpose: The aim was to clarify the features affecting cardiac sympathetic denervation in autopsy-confirmed dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) patients.
Methods: Fifty-four autopsy-confirmed DLB patients were enrolled. Tissue samples of the left ventricular anterior wall were immunostained with anti-tyrosine hydroxylase antibody to identify catecholaminergic nerve axons.
Purpose: We sought to investigate the genetic variants associated with the onset and progression of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
Design: Case-control genetic association study.
Methods: Japanese POAG patients (n = 505) and control subjects (n = 246) were genotyped for 22 genetic variants predisposing to POAG that can be classified into those associated with intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation (IOP-related genetic variants) and optic nerve vulnerability independent of IOP (non-IOP-related genetic variants).

Aim: To study relationships between reported risk factors for glaucoma and neuroretinal rim area in normal eyes.
Methods: The Kumejima study participants, 3762 of the 4632 eligible Kumejima residents 40 years and older, underwent a detailed ocular examination including sequential disc stereo photography. In a randomly chosen eye of a subject whose both eyes met the inclusion criteria, fundus photographs of 2474 ophthalmologically normal eyes of the 2474 subjects were analysed by computer-assisted planimetry to measure the disc, rim and β-peripapillary atrophy (PPA) areas.

A 39-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with the diagnosis of thyroid storm due to Graves' disease. Near-total thyroidectomy was performed after 1 month's pharmacological treatment, and he presented with tetany next morning. Serum corrected calcium value was 5.

A 60-year-old woman with a 20-year history of myeloperoxidase anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (MPO-ANCA)-associated vasculitis visited our hospital due to productive cough and a low-grade fever for several weeks. Thoracic computed tomography demonstrated scattered tiny nodules, patchy consolidation, ground glass opacities, and thickening interlobular septa. On video-assisted thoracic surgery, those abnormalities were found to correspond to the accumulation of hemosiderin-laden alveolar macrophages (AMs) in the alveolar spaces and alveolar septa due to MPO-ANCA vasculitis.

Aims: To predict Humphrey Field Analyzer Central 10-2 Swedish Interactive Threshold Algorithm-Standard test (HFA 10-2) results (Carl Zeiss Meditec, San Leandro, CA) from HFA 24-2 results of the same eyes with advanced glaucoma.
Methods: Training and testing HFA 24-2 and 10-2 data sets, respectively, consisted of 175 eyes (175 patients) and 44 eyes (44 patients) with open advanced glaucoma (mean deviation of HFA 24-2 ≤-20 dB). Using the training data set, the 68 total deviation (TD) values of the HFA 10-2 test points were predicted from those of the innermost 16 HFA 24-2 test points in the same eye, using image processing or various machine learning methods including bilinear interpolation (IP) as a standard for comparison.

Aim: To compare retinal ganglion cell (RGC)-related layer thickness asymmetry between early open-angle glaucoma (EG) eyes with superior and inferior hemiretina damage.
Methods: This was a retrospective study including 95 EG eyes (mean deviation >-2 dB, including 43 preperimetric glaucoma eyes) with photographically determined glaucomatous retinal nerve fibre layer defect and disc change confined to one hemiretina, and 93 age, sex and refraction matched normal subjects as controls. Ganglion cell complex, ganglion cell layer+inner plexiform layer and circumpapillary retinal nerve fibre layer thickness measured by spectral domain optical coherence imaging were compared between the affected and unaffected hemiretinae within each glaucoma eye as well as to those of the corresponding hemiretina of normal control eyes.

Reports indicate lower Down syndrome (DS) survival among females than among males in Australia, contrasting with female longevity in the general population. Using data on 1310 people with DS (626 females and 684 males) in Japan from five hospitals' medical records and questionnaires completed by parents of people with DS, we investigated sex differences in congenital heart disease (CHD), which may be related to mortality. The CHD rate was significantly higher for females (354, 57%) than for males (338, 49%; p=0.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between glucose tolerance levels and the circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (cpRNFLT) in a general Japanese population.
Design: Population-based, cross-sectional study.
Methods: In 2012 and 2013, a total of 2809 Japanese community dwellers aged 40-79 years in the Hisayama Study underwent eye examinations including cpRNFLT measurement with spectral domain optical coherence tomography.
Purpose: To study differences in systemic and ocular factors between eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) with an initial visual field defect (VFD) starting in the superior hemifield and those starting in the inferior hemifield in a population-based setting.
Subjects And Methods: The data were analyzed from eyes with definitive category-1 POAG based on the International Society of Geographic and Epidemiological Ophthalmology criteria with VFD constriction in the superior or inferior hemifield (superior and inferior VFD groups, respectively) found in 2 Japanese population-based glaucoma surveys. The visual fields were tested using the Humphrey Field Analyzer Central 30-2 or 24-2 Swedish Interactive Thresholding Algorithm Standard program.
