Article Synopsis
  • Diagnosing proximal hamstring tendinopathy (PHT) can be tough, as patients often have clinical symptoms but normal MRI results.
  • The study tested a new hip flexion (HF) MRI position, which mimics the sitting position that usually triggers pain, to see if it could better reveal PHT pathology compared to the standard scanning position.
  • Results showed that in 71% of cases, the HF position identified more severe injuries and significant differences in tendon diagnoses, suggesting this new position has better diagnostic value for PHT.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the prevalence, associated anomalies, and mortality of esophageal atresia (EA) in Finland from 2004 to 2017, hypothesizing that the Spitz classification and other congenital malformations would predict patient mortality.
  • A total of 337 EA cases were identified, with a prevalence of 4.17 per 10,000 births; the study noted a 5% neonatal mortality rate and a 91.5% survival rate at 1 year.
  • Results showed that syndromic cases had higher mortality, and the Spitz classification was a better predictor of neonatal mortality compared to cardiac anomalies, with type C being the most prevalent atresia type.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on developing a machine-learning model to predict anastomotic leakage (AL) after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, as this complication poses significant risks post-surgery.
  • 471 patients' preoperative CT and clinical data were analyzed to create and test the model using an XGBoost algorithm, with performance metrics measured using ROC curves.
  • The model showed a noteworthy accuracy, achieving a 79.2% area under the curve, which can aid in identifying patients at risk of AL, particularly where clinical indicators suggest low probability.*

While short-read sequencing currently dominates genetic research and diagnostics, it frequently falls short of capturing certain structural variants (SVs), which are often implicated in the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Optical genome mapping (OGM) is an innovative technique capable of capturing SVs that are undetectable or challenging-to-detect via short-read methods. This study aimed to investigate NDDs using OGM, specifically focusing on cases that remained unsolved after standard exome sequencing.

Choir singing is associated with enhanced structural connectivity across the adult lifespan.

Hum Brain Mapp

May 2024

Cognitive Brain Research Unit, Centre of Excellence in Music, Mind, Body and the Brain, Department of Psychology and Logopedics, Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland.

The global ageing of populations calls for effective, ecologically valid methods to support brain health across adult life. Previous evidence suggests that music can promote white matter (WM) microstructure and grey matter (GM) volume while supporting auditory and cognitive functioning and emotional well-being as well as counteracting age-related cognitive decline. Adding a social component to music training, choir singing is a popular leisure activity among older adults, but a systematic account of its potential to support healthy brain structure, especially with regard to ageing, is currently missing.

Objectives: It has been suggested that celiac disease could be diagnosed non-invasively in adults with transglutaminase antibody (TGA) levels >10x upper limit of normal (ULN). It is, however, unclear if high values signify more advanced disease and higher risk of co-morbidities. We investigated the association between the TGA levels, clinical characteristics and non-celiac endoscopic findings.
