Background: Recent evidence suggests prostate cancer independent of treatment has atrophic effects on whole heart and left ventricular (LV) masses, associated with reduced endurance exercise capacity. In a pre-clinical model, we tested the hypothesis that high-intensity training could prevent cardiac atrophy with prostate cancer and alter cardiac protein degradation mechanisms.

Methods: Dunning R-3327 AT-1 prostate cancer cells (1×10) were injected into the ventral prostate lobe of 5-6 mo immunocompetent Copenhagen rats (n=24).

Previous work has shown that a low dietary intake of zinc for a short duration significantly lowers the lymphatic absorption of alpha-tocopherol (alphaTP) in adult male rats. The present study investigated whether the nutritional status of zinc is critical in maintaining the tissue levels of the vitamin. One group of rats was fed an AIN-93G diet containing 3 mg zinc/kg (low zinc, LZ) and the other was fed the same diet but containing 30 mg zinc/kg (adequate zinc, AZ).

Trichosanthin, from Trichosanthes kirilowii is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family. It has been reported to have anti-cancer activity. The effects of Trichosanthin peptides (15 amino acids in length) on ConA stimulated incorporation of 3[H] thymidine into cultured, primary mouse spleen cells and L1210 cells were determined.

The diaphragm is the primary muscle of inspiration, and as such uncompromised function is essential to support the ventilatory and gas exchange demands associated with physical activity. The normal healthy diaphragm may fatigue during intense exercise, and diaphragm function is compromised with aging and obesity. However, more insidiously, respiratory diseases such as emphysema mechanically disadvantage the diaphragm, sometimes leading to muscle failure and death.

Hypoxia and altered hemodynamic status, both components of myocardial infarction, have been shown to be potent inducers of the 70 kD family of heat shock proteins (HSP70). We hypothesized that after infarction, the surviving myocardium would synthesize HSP70 proteins in a temporally and regionally distinct pattern. We believed that there would be a lack of an HSP70 response in the infarcted area (I), reflecting the loss of viable cells.

The aim of this study was to determine the ability of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), lysine vasopressin (LVP), oxytocin (OT), and angiotensin II (AII) to stimulate adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) secretion from porcine anterior pituitary (AP) cells in vitro and to evaluate the role of protein kinase C (PKC) in the interaction between CRH and LVP. In this study, porcine AP cells were enzymatically and mechanically dispersed, cultured (150,000 cells/well) for 4 d, and then challenged with doses of various neuropeptides for 3 hr. CRH (10(-7)-10(-10) M) was the most potent of the peptides tested in stimulating ACTH release from porcine AP cells.

The effects of gamma irradiation on degradation of aflatoxin B1 in wheat, corn, and soybeans and of T-2 toxin in wheat, deoxynivalenol (DON) in soybeans, and zearalenone in corn at 9, 13, and 17% moisture were studied. Radiation doses of 5, 7.5, 10 or 20 kGy were applied to spiked grain samples, and the residual toxins were measured using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

In the study of physiological system dynamics, a mobile Front End System is needed in faithfully monitoring and recording physiological signals at various experimental sites. Local real-time mode operation is required at the site of the experiment such that the significant dynamic response or event from the subject can be easily captured and displayed as the experiment progresses. An additional requirement is the interfacing with the campus computer network such that numerous network computing resources can be employed in further processing of the captured data.

Catecholamines and related o-diphenols extracted from the cuticle and hemolymph of adult cockroaches during sclerotization and pigmentation of the cuticle were analyzed by reverse phase HPLC with electrochemical detection. At ecdysis, dopamine (DA) o-conjugates predominated in the hemolymph of Periplaneta americana, P. australasiae, P.
