Introduction: Reproducibility is critical to diagnostic accuracy and treatment implementation. Concurrent with clinical reproducibility, research reproducibility establishes whether the use of identical study materials and methodologies in replication efforts permits researchers to arrive at similar results and conclusions. In this study, we address this gap by evaluating nephrology literature for common indicators of transparent and reproducible research.

Pharmacologic ascorbate treatment (P-AscH, high-dose, intravenous vitamin C) results in a transient short-term increase in the flux of hydrogen peroxide that is preferentially cytotoxic to cancer cells versus normal cells. This study examines whether an increase in hydrogen peroxide is sustained posttreatment and potential mechanisms involved in this process. Cellular bioenergetic profiling following treatment with P-AscH was examined in tumorigenic and nontumorigenic cells.

Cocaine is a highly addictive recreational drug that is a well-known cause of a variety of disease processes such as stroke, myocardial infarction, and even sudden cardiac death. In current literature, venous thrombosis secondary to cocaine abuse remains under-examined, while the harmful effects of the drug within the arterial vasculature are well-studied and understood. Our case presents a patient who was found to have a large pulmonary embolism and pulmonary infarction after several days of cocaine abuse.

Lateral extraarticular procedures (LEAPs) in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-injured knee were widely abandoned in the 1990s but have seen a recent resurgence. The aim of this review was to demonstrate that anterolateral ligament reconstruction (ALLR) is associated with evidence of significant advantages and no evidence of historical concerns. A narrative review of the literature was performed.

Background/purpose: Properly designed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard in patient-centered clinical research. Incomplete intervention reporting affects the readers' ability to evaluate treatment efficacy. Previous studies show that detailed descriptions of trial interventions remains insufficient for reliable replication.

This study used a nitroaliphatic chemistry approach to synthesize a novel artemisinin-derived carba-dimer (AG-1) and determined its anti-proliferative effects in human normal and cancer cells. AG-1 treatments selectively inhibit proliferation of cancer cells compared to normal human fibroblasts. Compared to artemisinin, AG-1 is more toxic to human breast, prostate, head-neck, pancreas and skin cancer cells; 50% inhibition (IC) 123 µM in AG-1 vs.

The heart is the first major organ to develop during embryogenesis and must receive proper spatiotemporal signaling for proper development. Failure of proper signaling between the first and second heart fields at twenty days gestation contributes to the generation of a congenital heart defect. The most common cyanotic congenital heart defect is tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) which requires surgical intervention in the first year of life.

Reconstructing diet is critical to understanding hominin adaptations. Isotopic and functional morphological analyses of early hominins are compatible with consumption of hard foods, such as mechanically-protected seeds, but dental microwear analyses are not. The protective shells surrounding seeds are thought to induce complex enamel surface textures characterized by heavy pitting, but these are absent on the teeth of most early hominins.

Background: Cyclops syndrome is characterized by a symptomatic extension deficit attributed to impingement of a cyclops lesion within the intercondylar notch. The syndrome is an important cause of reoperation after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). It has been suggested that remnant-preserving ACLR techniques may predispose to cyclops syndrome, but there is very limited evidence to support this.

Interest in and use of topical analgesics has been increasing, presumably due to their potential utility for relief of acute and chronic pain. Topically applied agents with analgesic properties can target peripheral nociceptive pathways while minimizing absorption into the plasma that leads to potential systemic adverse effects.Clinical trials have found 5% lidocaine patches to be effective and well tolerated for the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) with a minimal risk of toxicity or drug-drug interactions.

Background: The anterolateral ligament (ALL) has been identified as a structure on the lateral side of the knee, but debate exists regarding whether it is a capsular thickening or a ligament.
Hypothesis: A detailed ultrastructural characterization of the ALL and its ultrastructure collagen arrangement will reveal it more closely resembles ligamentous tissue than joint capsule.
Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study.

There is a growing concern in the field of geriatric medicine that transgender health is often overlooked and under-reported. Not only does this impact the health and safety of the aging transgender community, but it also often influences the ability of physicians to provide high-quality evidence-based care. This article reviews the current knowledge base for geriatric transgender health and aims to organize evidence-based clinical recommendations for the primary care provider.

Objective: Why are different medicinal parts including heads, bodies and tails of (ASR) distinct in pharmaceutical activities? Here we explored their discrepancy in chemical constituents and transcriptome.
Methods: ASR were separated into three medicinal parts: heads (rootstocks with petiole traces of ASR), bodies (taproots of ASR) and tails (lateral roots of ASR), and chemical and transcriptomic analyses were conducted simultaneously.
Results: High performance liquid chromatography HPLC) fingerprint results showed that five widely used active ingredients (ferulic acid, senkyunolide H, senkyunolide A, -butylphathlide, and ligustilide) were distributed unevenly in the three ASR medicinal parts.

Introduction: Reports from the current literature show a lack of detail with depictions of the genicular arteries (GA). The intricate anatomy and infrequency of operating in the posterior knee may lead to surgeons being unfamiliar with the anatomy. The goal of this cadaveric study was to quantitatively map the arteries and create a caution zone that can be utilized when preparing and performing surgical procedures involving the knee.

Understanding the regulation of development can help elucidate the pathogenesis behind many developmental defects found in humans and other vertebrates. Evidence has shown that alternative splicing of messenger RNA (mRNA) plays a role in developmental regulation, but our knowledge of the underlying mechanisms that regulate alternative splicing are incomplete. Notably, a subset of small noncoding RNAs known as scaRNAs (small cajal body associated RNAs) contribute to spliceosome maturation and function through guiding covalent modification of spliceosomal RNAs with either methylation or pseudouridylation on specific nucleotides, but the developmental significance of these modifications is not well understood.

Stigmatizing attitudes among primary care (PC) providers potentially contribute to poor health outcomes for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI). In this pilot study, our primary aim is to test the feasibility, and preliminary implementation of two interventions (contact and education) to help change provider attitudes and behavior. Participants were 39 primary care providers from two Veterans Affairs medical centers with 19 randomized to the contact intervention and 20 to the education intervention.

Background: Irreparable rotator cuff tears in active patients provide a significant challenge and a consensus on the gold standard treatment is currently lacking. Superior capsule reconstruction (SCR) has recently been advocated and functions by providing a passive biological constraint to superior humeral head migration. The aim of this study is to systematically review the literature to evaluate the role of SCR in terms of functional outcome scores and failure rates.

Introduction: Arthroscopic shoulder surgery is increasingly performed as a day case procedure. Nausea, vomiting and inadequate pain control are the most frequent reasons for reattendance or failed discharge. Gabapentin is advocated as an adjunct to mitigate these symptoms and its use in shoulder arthroscopy may provide improved post-operative symptom control.

Background: Porous tantalum is currently used in orthopaedic surgery for a variety of indications including soft tissue re-attachment. However, the clinical results have been variable and a previous laboratory study has suggested that tantalum may actually inhibit chick tendon fibroblasts. The influence of tantalum on human cell-types involved in soft tissue re-attachment has not been defined.
