A 65-year-old woman was diagnosed with a rare type of leukemia that mixes different blood cell types and has problems with important genes.
Her bone marrow had a lot of special cancer cells that looked different and had issues with the p53 gene, which usually helps prevent cancer.
Scientists found changes in other genes, meaning her leukemia might be due to a mix of genetic problems, including the MLL gene being overly active because of the p53 gene being damaged.
