Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous human herpes virus, but related with several types of malignancies. Among EBV-related malignancies, EBV-associated gastric carcinoma (EBVaGC) has the largest patient's number. We screened for EBV infection in 1067 GC lesions of 1132 patients who underwent surgical resection from 2007 to 2017 in Japan and examined clinicopathological features of EBVaGC.

In cases showing organizing pneumonia (OP) with radiologic findings and pathological images, it is necessary to differentiate between idiopathic and secondary diseases as the cause of OP. infection as a cause of OP is not well known. We herein report two cases of secondary pulmonary cryptococcosis in immunocompromised patients who showed OP, and the usefulness of bronchoscopy and serum cryptococcal antigen test for an early diagnosis.

We report the first case demonstrating an association between Kawasaki disease (KD) and erythema nodosum (EN). A 3-year-old girl presented with EN as an initial manifestation of KD. At the initial visit, she showed high fever of 40°C, injection of the oropharynx, cervical lymphadenopathy, and red-purple cutaneous nodules, particularly on the lower limbs.

β2-microglobulin-related (Aβ2M) amyloidosis (dialysis-associated amyloidosis) is a common complication in long-term dialysis patients. An increased concentration of β2-microgloblin (β2-m) in the serum appears to be a prerequisite for Aβ2M amyloidosis, in turn causing Aβ2M amyloid deposition predominantly in the osteoarticular tissue. There are few reports, however, of Aβ2M amyloid deposition in non-dialysis patients.

A 45-year-old man presented with the chief complaint of anal discomfort to a previous doctor. The symptoms remained after undergoing seton surgery following the diagnosis of intermuscular anal fistula. CT showed a tumor that was 3 cm in diameter on the right wall of the rectum, and he received a diagnosis of neuroendocrine carcinoma(NEC)based on a biopsy.

Background: Evaluation of knee and lower limb function alone is not sufficient to assess gait. For accurate assessment of gait abnormality, gait oscillation should also be measured. The goal of this analysis was to assess the influence of the knee joint on gait oscillation during gait and stair-stepping in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee.

Aim: To investigate whether high-intensity breastfeeding (HIB) reduces insulin resistance during early post-partum period in women with gestational diabetes (GDM), independent of post-partum weight change (PWC).
Materials And Methods: In this multicentre prospective study, we included Japanese women with GDM who underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) during early post-partum. We measured plasma insulin during OGTT to obtain a homeostasis model of assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).

Background: Circulating interferon-γ (IFN-γ) concentration may be sustained at a high level regardless of the initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in some patients with HIV-1 infection. In the present study, we examined the clinical characteristics of HIV-1-infected patients with high levels of plasma IFN-γ.
Methods: The study subjects were patients infected with HIV-1 who were either naïve to ART with CD4 cell count > 200 cells/μL (n = 12), or had achieved viral suppression after ART for over a year (n = 188).

Objective: Malnutrition is common in patients with esophageal cancer, resulting in increased postoperative complications and mortality. Although preoperative immunonutrition can significantly reduce the incidence of postoperative infectious complications, its effect in patietns with esophageal cancer undergoing esophagectomy remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of perioperative immunonutritional support on the postoperative course and long-term survival of this group of patients.

Targeted temperature management (TTM), or therapeutic hypothermia, is one of the most potent neuroprotective approaches after ischemic and traumatic brain injuries. TTM has been applied clinically with various methods, but effective achievement and maintenance of the target temperature remain challenging. Furthermore, timing of cooling and target body and brain temperature to optimize effectiveness for neuroprotection and to minimize side effects are yet to be standardized.

Background: Tumor spread through air spaces (STAS) has recently been reported as a novel form of lung adenocarcinoma invasion that can negatively affect survival; however, its role in pleomorphic carcinoma remains unclear. The goal of this study was to characterize tumor STAS in pleomorphic carcinoma, including its association with clinicopathologic features and prognosis.
Methods: Tumor specimens obtained from 35 consecutive patients with pleomorphic carcinoma who underwent surgical resection between 2009 and 2015 were reviewed.

Epstein⁻Barr virus-associated gastric carcinoma (EBVaGC) is the most common malignancy caused by EBV infection. EBVaGC has definite histological characteristics similar to gastric carcinoma with lymphoid stroma. Clinically, EBVaGC has a significantly low frequency of lymph node metastasis compared with EBV-negative gastric cancer, resulting in a better prognosis.

Background: Currently, there is no consensus regarding which patients with high-risk prostate cancer (PCa) would benefit the most by radical prostatectomy (RP). We aimed to identify patients with high-risk PCa who are treatable by RP alone.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data on 315 patients with D'Amico high-risk PCa who were treated using RP without neoadjuvant or adjuvant therapy at the institutions of the Yamaguchi Uro-Oncology Group between 2009 and 2013.

We previously reported the effectiveness of the product of tumor number and size (NxS factor) for the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients following hepatectomy. The present study aimed to propose a new score based on the NxS factor to predict HCC recurrence following hepatectomy. A total of 406 patients who underwent hepatectomy for HCC at Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine were retrospectively analyzed to develop the new score.

This study assessed the effect of pegfilgrastim in patients with early stage breast cancer who were receiving docetaxel and cyclophosphamide(TC)therapy(75mg/m / 2 docetaxel plus 600 mg/m2 cyclophosphamide). In total, 17 patients who were to receive 4 planned cycles of TC therapy every 3 weeks were included in this study. Of the 17 patients, 10 who received pegfilgrastim after January 2016 formed the Peg-G group and 7 who did not receive pegfilgrastim until December 2015 formed the control group.

Background: The right gastroepiploic artery (RGEA) is often used for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in Japan. As gastric cancer has a high prevalence in many Asian countries, we investigated problems with surgery for gastric cancer after CABG using the RGEA.
Methods: A total of 860 patients underwent CABG using the RGEA between January 1997 and December 2006.

Elderly onset Rheumatoid arthritis (EORA) has important clinical distinctions when compared with younger onset RA (YORA). In knee arthritis of elderly patients, infection, crystal-induced arthritis or EORA should be suspected if elevation of CRP in the preoperative examination and turbid joint effusion in their knee joint are found. Furthermore, if joint swelling and effusion remain after performing total knee arthroplasty (TKA), the infection after TKA, implant debris-related arthritis and EORA should be considered.
