Linear IgA bullous dermatosis (LABD) is a rare autoimmune bullous disease that can either occur without any apparent cause or be induced by the administration of certain drugs, the most common of which is vancomycin. We present a case of a 45-year-old woman who was diagnosed with vancomycin-induced LABD by the presence of a characteristic linear band of IgA along the basement membrane zone on direct immunofluorescence microscopy. Our patient showed complete recovery after a 2-week period during which vancomycin administration was discontinued.

Many patients are currently suffering from nickel (Ni)-induced allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). There have been few Korean studies dealing with the threshold of Ni-induced ACD and quantifying the total amount of Ni in the metal alloys. The aim of this study is to evaluate the amount of Ni leached from metal alloys and Ni contents in metal alloys, and to estimate the threshold of Ni-induced ACD.

Recent studies indicate that several Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are implicated in recognizing viral structures and instigating immune responses against viral infections. The aim of this study is to examine the expression of TLRs and proinflammatory cytokines in viral skin diseases such as verruca vulgaris (VV) and molluscum contagiosum (MC). Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and immunostaining of skin samples were performed to determine the expression of specific antiviral and proinflammatory cytokines as well as 5 TLRs (TLR2, 3, 4, 7, and 9).

Despite the availability of different classes of drugs for the treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders, there are a number of clinically significant unmet needs, such as a high prevalence of treatment resistance, partial response, subsyndromal symptomatology, recurrence and relapse. With the approval of atypical antipsychotics, which are associated with a lower adverse effect burden than typical antipsychotics, consideration of their off-label use for the treatment of affective disorders and various other psychiatric disorders has become a viable option. However, consideration should be given to the US FDA black box warning indicating that atypical antipsychotics may increase mortality risk, particularly in the elderly population with dementia-related psychosis.

We annually evaluated (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/ computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) scans for three consecutive years in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis. The inflammatory activity of the rheumatoid synovium was visualized in coronal and transverse sections by FDG-PET/CT. The extent and area of the synovial inflammation was relatively well delineated, and this technique was more informative in detecting inflammation than were conventional X-rays.

The epidemiologic data on smoking in association with Parkinson disease (PD) is puzzling. A lower incidence of smoking-related malignancies, especially lung cancer, has been reported by several studies in the patients with PD. In this study, we investigated polymorphic variations in the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) gene, which has been proposed having a pivotal role in progressive damage of nigral dopaminergic neurons, between Korean patients with 188 PD and 321 lung cancer patients.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a term encompassing tumors previously diagnosed as malignant schwannoma, malignant neurilemmoma, neurogenic sarcoma, and neurofibrosarcoma The occurrence rate of MPNST in neurofibromatosis type 1 patients is known to be about 4.6%. Tumors occurring in this particular group have a worse prognosis in that they occur at an earlier age, are more centrally located, tend to be of a larger size and show more metastases and recurrences.

The bone marrow contains stem cells that have the potential to differentiate into a variety of organ-specific mature cells, including the liver and the pancreas. Recently, the origin of hepatic progenitors and hepatocytes was identified to be the bone marrow. However, evidence that describes which cells, among all bone marrow cells, differentiate into hepatocytes, has not yet been presented.

Objectives: Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are a promising candidate gene in schizophrenia as they are believed to play a protective role in the central nervous system. An alteration in the titers of antibodies to the HSPs in schizophrenia patients has been suggested. Association between the three polymorphisms of HSP70-1 (HSPA1A), HSP70-hom (HSPA1L) and HSP70-2 (HSPA1B) and schizophrenia has been reported.

Only one-third of patients undergoing monotherapy with an antidepressant achieve remission of their depressive symptoms and gain functional recovery. Therefore, further exploration of antidepressant mechanisms of action is important in order to facilitate the development of antidepressants with new modes of action. Preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated that major depression is associated with impaired inflammatory responses and deficient neuroprotection.

Background: Laparoscopic surgery has been adopted for the treatment of gastric cancer, and many reports have confirmed its favorable outcomes. Most surgeons prefer to laparoscopy-assisted gastrectomy using minilaparotomy rather than totally laparoscopic procedures because of technical difficulties of intracorporeal anastomosis. We conducted this study to compare laparoscopy-assisted distal gastrectomy with totally laparoscopic distal gastrectomy.

Recent technical advances in computed tomography (CT) and the introduction of three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction through computer systems make distinct visualization of tiny defects in the hand and wrist a feasible task. Three wrists from three patients -- two of whom are patients with rheumatoid arthritis and one with osteoarthritis -- were evaluated by 3D CT. Images were obtained with a multidetector-row CT scanner.

The receptor activator of nuclear factor kappaB ligand (RANKL) is an osteoclastogenic mediator, which is mainly expressed by stromal cells and osteoblast. However, T cells can also be an important provider for RANKL in special condition such as autoimmune arthritis. We examined the RANKL expression of hyporesponsive CD4+ T cells induced by oral feeding with type II collagen in collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mice.

An intrathoracic gossypiboma is a rare condition. Moreover, intrathoracic gossypibomas with intrapulmonary location are extremely rare and only a few cases of intrapulmonary gossypiboma have been published. Usually gossypiboma has the characteristic CT appearance of a soft tissue mass with high attenuation, air bubbles and a whirl-like pattern, but its radiological manifestations may be variable according to the location and chronicity of the sponge.
