October 1993

Department of Radiology, Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic University Medical College, Seoul, Korea.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the CT findings in 10 patients with abdominal actinomycosis to determine the appearance of lesions and the pattern of spread of the disease.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the CT findings in 10 patients with pathologically proved actinomycosis. Involved areas were the pelvis (n = 4), greater omentum (n = 3), liver (n = 2), and kidney (n = 1).

The authors investigated the distribution of HCV genotypes in patients with various chronic liver diseases in Korea. Study population was 70 individuals, positive for second generation anti-HCV EIA, consisting of 37 cases with sporadic non-A, non-B (NANB) chronic hepatitis (CH), 12 NANB hepatocellular carcinoma, 16 post-transfusion NANB hepatitis, 4 non-B blood donors and 1 healthy family member of a patient with sporadic CH. Molecular typing was performed by RT-nested PCR with type-specific primer sets deduced from the NS-5 region of HCV.

Prevalence of hepatitis C virus related to liver diseases in Korea.

Gastroenterol Jpn

May 1993

Department of Internal Medicine, Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic University Medical College, Seoul, Korea.

The authors investigated the epidemiology of hepatitis C virus (HCV) related to liver diseases in Korea. Anti-HCV was studied by EIA in sera from patients with chronic liver diseases (CLD), individuals at high risk, healthy individuals, and family members of patients with CLD. We also evaluated the efficacy of a new anti-HCV assay kit, HCD EIA, consisting of 3 recombinant peptides derived from CORE, NS3 and NS5 regions of the HCV genome, for screening HCV infection.

To investigate the interrelationship between the anti-HCV prevalence and the HCV RNA positivity in chronic non-A, non-B (NANB) liver diseases in Korea (n = 137), we performed RT-nested PCR using 4 primers in the 5'-noncoding region of HCV genome. The overall HCV RNA positive rates were 62.8%; 87.

Clinical experience of two-step photorefractive keratectomy in 19 eyes with high myopia.

Refract Corneal Surg

June 1993

Department of Ophthalmology, Catholic University Medical College, Kangnam St Mary's Hospital, Seoul, Korea.

The maximum myopic correction with one-step ablation in excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) using the ExciMed UV200 LA 193-nanometer excimer laser (Summit Technology, Inc, Waltham, Mass,) is only up to 6.00 D because of a fixed computer program. We performed a simultaneous two-step PRK procedure for nearly full correction on 19 eyes of 19 patients with myopia ranging from -8.

Phototherapeutic keratectomy in nine eyes with superficial corneal diseases.

Refract Corneal Surg

June 1993

Department of Ophthalmology, Kangnam St Mary's Hospital, Catholic University Medical College, Seoul, Korea.

We performed phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) in seven patients (nine eyes) with superficial corneal disease such as band keratopathy (one patient), Reis-Bückler's dystrophy (one patient, two eyes), granular dystrophy (two patients, three eyes), recurrent granular dystrophy (one patient), postinfection scar (one patient), and corneal scarring after pterygium removal (one patient). All patients received PTK after topical anesthesia with Pontocaine 0.5% and underwent epithelial removal with a surgical blade.

Photorefractive keratectomy in 202 myopic eyes: one year results.

Refract Corneal Surg

June 1993

Department of Ophthalmology, Catholic University Medical College, Kangnam St Mary's Hospital, Seoul, South Korea.

We performed one-step procedures of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) with the use of the excimer laser (193 nm) on 1519 myopic eyes during 1 year. From this group, we prospectively evaluated visual and refractive results of 202 (13%) consecutive myopic eyes that were followed for more than 1 year. Myopic eyes were divided into two groups according to the amount of myopia: group I, 135 eyes, 87 patients, less than -7.

Excimer laser ablation of conjunctival epithelial melanosis.

J Cataract Refract Surg

March 1993

Department of Ophthalmology, Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic University Medical College, Seoul, Korea.

Two patients with conjunctival epithelial melanosis received a 193 nm argon fluoride excimer laser treatment. In both patients the melanosis was easily removed with a smoothing technique using the excimer laser. The ablated area showed normal appearing conjunctiva.

Secondary intraocular lens implantation in aphakia.

J Cataract Refract Surg

March 1992

Department of Ophthalmology, Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic University Medical College, Seoul, Korea.

We retrospectively studied secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in 165 aphakic patients (162 eyes) from May 1983 to August 1989. Seventy-five eyes (46.3%) had secondary IOL implantation; these included seven cases of trans-sulcus scleral fixation of the posterior chamber lens.

Computed tomography (CT)-guided liver biopsy has become an accepted part of the diagnostic evaluation of patients with benign and malignant hepatic disease The advantages of imaging guidance over blind percutaneous biopsy are now well established in the literature. Controversy continues to exist, however, over the safety and accuracy of the procedure, as well as over the proper choice of needle: large-caliber cutting needle versus small caliber aspiration needle. In 1984, our group reported the results in a preliminary set of 180 patients in whom CT-guided biopsy of focal liver lesions was performed.

Traumatic isolated intracerebral hemorrhage in children.

Childs Nerv Syst

October 1989

Department of Neurosurgery, Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic University Medical College, Seoul, Korea.

Among 314 children with craniocerebral injury, 21 were diagnosed as having traumatic, isolated intracerebral hemorrhage (TIICH) by computed tomography (CT) from 1980 to 1986 (basal ganglia, 7; frontal, 8; parietal, 2; frontoparietal, 1; temporoparietal, 1; intraventricular, 1; midbrain, 1). The level of consciousness was assessed according to the Children's Coma Score (CCS) and CT scan was subsequently repeated to evaluate the change in TIICH. The patients were classified into three types according to their clinical courses and CT findings: type I (4 cases), type II (14 cases), and type III (3 cases).

Intraocular inflammation of denatured viscoelastic substance in cases of cataract extraction and lens implantation.

J Cataract Refract Surg

September 1987

Department of Ophthalmology, Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic University Medical College, Seoul, Korea.

I present three successive pseudophakic cases that had intraocular inflammation (iritis) and bullous keratopathy presumably caused by denatured sodium hyaluronate (Healon). The denatured Healon was injected into the anterior chamber mixed with fresh Healon during routine planned extracapsular cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation, when the cannula was reused after sterilization by disinfectants and autoclaving. A residuum of the viscoelastic substance remained inside the cannula and its nature was changed to a toxic chemical by the action of disinfectants and the sterilization procedures.
