A novel deterioration prediction system for mild COVID-19 patients in Korea: a retrospective study.

The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic presents serious public health threats. Omicron, the current most prevalent strain of COVID-19, has a low fatality rate and very high transmissibility, so the number of patients with mild symptoms of COVID-19 is rapidly increasing. This change of pandemic challenges medical systems worldwide in many aspects, including sharp increases in demands for hospital infrastructure, critical shortages in medical equipment, and medical staff.

Convolutional neural network model for automatic recognition and classification of pancreatic cancer cell based on analysis of lipid droplet on unlabeled sample by 3D optical diffraction tomography.

Introduction: Pancreatic cancer cells generally accumulate large numbers of lipid droplets (LDs), which regulate lipid storage. To promote rapid diagnosis, an automatic pancreatic cancer cell recognition system based on a deep convolutional neural network was proposed in this study using quantitative images of LDs from stain-free cytologic samples by optical diffraction tomography.

Methods: We retrieved 3D refractive index tomograms and reconstructed 37 optical images of one cell.

Development of Clinical Decision Support System for Patient Blood Management in Hospital Information System.

A data pipeline was developed to send and receive patient blood management (PBM) data from all medical institutions in Korea. By incorporating the collected data with national big data, the system will be able to generate key performance index for each medical institution. The central PBM system also provides feedback to each individual medical institution.

Importance: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a cardiovascular risk factor, but whether sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) are associated with reduced cardiovascular risk in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and concomitant NAFLD remains uncertain.

Objective: To investigate the outcomes of SGLT-2i and GLP-1RA therapy among patients with T2D varied by the presence or absence of NAFLD.

COVID-19 vaccination, incidence, and mortality rates among individuals with mental disorders in South Korea: A nationwide retrospective study.

We examined COVID-19 vaccination, incidence, and mortality rates among patients with mental health disorders in South Korea from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2021. The study found that individuals with mental disorders had higher COVID-19 incidence and mortality than those without. Patients with mood disorders had higher vaccination rates and COVID-19 incidence and mortality than those without mental disorders.

The risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke in survivors of head and neck cancer in Korea.

Background: Head and neck cancer (HNCA) survivors have a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) or stroke because of sharing risk factors of disease. Therefore, we investigated the risk of CVD or stroke occurrence among HNCA survivors in Korea based on the Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) Service claims database.

Methods: We retrieved claims data of patients who were diagnosed with HNCA in 2014-2015 using ICD-10 code and followed up data until 2018.

Methods and Results The SMART-CHOICE (Smart Angioplasty Research Team: Comparison Between P2Y12 Antagonist Monotherapy vs Dual Anti- platelet Therapy in Patients Undergoing Implantation of Coronary Drug-Eluting Stents) randomized trial compared 3-month DAPT followed by P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy with 12-month DAPT in 2993 patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. The present analysis was a prespecified subgroup analysis for patients receiving Orsiro stents.

Background Arterial stiffness predicts both cardiovascular events and incident hypertension. However, whether brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) is predictive of incident hypertension based on the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) High Blood Pressure Guidelines has not been established. We performed a large cohort study to investigate whether incident hypertension could be predicted from baPWV measurements as a measure of arterial stiffness, even when applying updated hypertension criteria.

Background Given that statins are increasingly being used for primary-prevention, the public concerns regarding the risk of new-onset diabetes mellitus associated with statin use may be an issue. Methods and Results Using healthcare data from the national health insurance examinees, our study comprised a cohort of adults aged ≥40 years with hypercholesterolemia who would be eligible for statin therapy for primary prevention from 2005 to 2012. The primary outcome was the occurrence of clinically relevant new-onset diabetes mellitus requiring medical therapy.

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome, obesity and insulin resistance has become an epidemic in the world. A strong association exists between metabolic syndrome and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), though the etiology of NAFLD is still unclear. This close association leads to numerous clinical studies to investigate the effects of insulin sensitizers, thiazolidinediones (TZDs), on hepatic fat accumulation.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma involving cervical neck lymph nodes: correlations with lymphangiogenesis and ultrasound features.

Stratification of risk factors for cervical lymph node metastasis (LNM) in thyroid papillary carcinoma is important for providing standards for post-operative adjuvant radio-iodine therapy and for patient prognosis. We investigated pathological factors based on the lymphatic vessel system and radiological features associated with tumor with cervical neck LNM. Among patients who had undergone thyroidectomy confirmed to be papillary thyroid carcinoma, we selected 126 age-sex matched paired patients without cervical LNM (group 1) and with LNM (group 2) to evaluate risk factors.

Factors affecting the technical difficulty of colonoscopy.

Background/aims: Colonoscopy is a standard diagnostic tool for screening and surveillance of diseases affecting the colon. Colonoscopy may be painful for patients and difficult for the endoscopist. The aim of this study was to identify the factors affecting the technical difficulty of a colonoscopic examination and to predict potential difficult patients who will undergo colonoscopy.

Background: Thyroid abnormalities affect a considerable portion of the population, and overt hypothyroidism is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease and adverse changes in blood lipids.
