Lifestyle-related diseases (LSRDs), such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, are a global crisis. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) have been extensively researched because they trigger or promote LSRDs. Recently, techniques such as fluorimetry, immunostaining, Western blotting, slot blotting, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, matrix-assisted laser desorption-mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) have helped prove the existence of intra/extracellular AGEs and revealed novel AGE structures and their modifications against peptide sequences.

In the practice of clinical genetics, gene testing is usually guided by clinical diagnosis. When dealing with rare diseases, it is often necessary to create new test systems. The handling of a gene with a substantial number of exons poses a challenge both in sequential Sanger sequencing for each exon, and in the setup of capture probes to each exon for next-generation sequencing (NGS).

Background & Aims: Enteral nutrition (EN) in the prone position for severe respiratory failure is considered possible with care. However, the extent to which it is feasible, especially its association with the length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, is unclear. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between the duration of prone position therapy and adequacy of EN delivery and explored factors associated with this relationship in an observational study of critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who were actively treated in the prone position.

Advances in genetic technologies have made genetic testing more accessible than ever before. However, depending on national, regional, legal, and health insurance circumstances, testing procedures may still need to be streamlined in real-world clinical practice. In cases of autosomal recessive disease with consanguinity, the mutation locus is necessarily isodisomy because both alleles originate from a common ancestral chromosome.

Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) has been associated with postoperative morbidities, including arm lymphedema, shoulder dysfunction, and paresthesia. Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy emerged as a method to assess axillary nodal status and possibly obviate the need for ALND in patients with clinically node-negative (cN0) breast cancer. The majority of breast cancer patients are eligible for SLN biopsy only, so ALND can be avoided.

Comparison of covered self-expandable metallic stents with 12-mm and 10-mm diameters for unresectable malignant distal biliary obstructions: a prospective randomized trial.

Gastrointest Endosc

May 2024

Department of Gastroenterology, Teikyo University Mizonokuchi Hospital, Kanagawa, Japan; Third Department of Internal Medicine, University of Toyama, Toyama, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • Covered self-expandable metallic stents are effective in treating unresectable malignant distal biliary obstruction, with the 12-mm stent showing longer patency than the 10-mm stent due to reduced sludge formation.
  • A randomized controlled trial with 81 patients revealed that stents measuring 12 mm had a significantly lower rate of recurrent biliary obstruction at 6 months compared to the 10-mm stents.
  • The study concluded that the 12-mm stents not only delayed recurrence of obstruction but were also associated with factors like receiving chemotherapy that impacted treatment outcomes.
