A 54-year-old man presented with a significant fourth heart sound (S4) and increased intensity of the second heart sound (S2), despite the absence of heart failure symptoms, in the second week of March 2024. Visualized phonocardiograms confirmed these findings, and further interviews revealed that he had suffered lifestyle changes, such as long commutes and sodium overload, while contributing to the response efforts in the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. Visualized phonocardiograms were also influential in determining the treatment strategy, persuading the patient to undergo a specific therapy, evaluating the therapeutic effects, and suggesting a new model for clinical practice.

To confirm the performance improvement of virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) for iodine contrast tasks in a clinical photon-counting detector CT (PCD CT) using Fourier-based assessment, compared with those in the latest-generation dual-source dual-energy CT (DECT). A water-filled bath with a diameter of 300 mm, which contains rod-shaped phantoms equivalent to diluted iodine (2 and 12 mg/mL), was scanned using PCD CT and DECT at 15, 7.5, and 3 mGy.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of long-term exposure to physical barriers used as preventive measures during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on cognitive function and behavior in an apolipoprotein E (ApoE) mouse dementia model.
Methods: ApoE mice were divided into co-housed, partitioned by a transparent bulkhead (partitioned), and isolated groups. To assess anxiety, cognitive recognition, and spatial learning, behavioral tests, including the open-field test, novel object recognition test, and Morris water maze test, were conducted at three and six months after the start of the 33-week rearing period.

Here, we report a novel PROS1 splicing mutation in a patient with type I protein S deficiency. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of pathogenic splicing variants at the mRNA level was performed by long-range PCR-based targeted DNA and RNA sequencing. A base substitution in the exon 4 splicing donor site activates a potential splicing donor site in intron 4, resulting in an in-frame insertion of 48 bases (16 amino acids).

In normal-pressure hydrocephalus, disturbances in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation occur; therefore, understanding CSF dynamics is crucial. The two-dimensional phase-contrast (2D-PC) method, a common approach for visualizing CSF flow on MRI, often presents challenges owing to prominent vein signals and excessively high contrast, hindering the interpretation of morphological information. Therefore, we devised a new imaging method that utilizes T-weighted high-signal intensification of the CSF and saturation pulses, without requiring specialized imaging sequences.

A useful perioperative nutritional therapy for highly invasive esophageal cancer surgical cases needs to be developed. We clarified the usefulness of amino-acid-enriched nutritional therapy using glutamine (Gln)/arginine (Arg)/calcium β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HMB) products on the short-term postoperative outcomes of minimally invasive esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. Altogether, 114 patients (Gln/Arg/HMB group) received perioperative nutritional therapy with Gln/Arg/HMB products, and we retrospectively investigated the change in nutritional parameters including skeletal muscle mass, occurrence of postoperative complications, and short-term postoperative outcomes in this group.

Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) or reoxygenation injury is the paradoxical exacerbation of cellular impairment following restoration of blood flow after a period of ischemia during surgical procedures or other conditions. Acute interruption of blood supply to the liver and subsequent reperfusion can result in hepatocyte injury, apoptosis, and necrosis. Since the liver requires a continuous supply of oxygen for many biochemical reactions, any obstruction of blood flow can rapidly lead to hepatic hypoxia, which could quickly progress to absolute anoxia.

Pathological diagnosis of breast cancer often includes cases of lymph node metastases without lymphatic or lymphovascular invasion by the primary tumor. In this study, to resolve this discrepancy, we designed a sensitive method to detect lymphatic invasion and correlate it with lymph node metastasis. Elastica van Gieson (EVG) staining and D2-40 immunohistochemistry revealed the abundant distribution of lymphatic vessels around blood vessels in the mammary tissue in close proximity to the elastic fibers around the arteries and veins.

We present the case of a 52-year-old female with a giant phyllodes tumor (GPT), which was fungating through the skin that showed fleshy polypoid outgrowths. Histological analysis revealed stromal atypia, mitotic activity, and stromal overgrowth; however, the tumor border was well-defined, and malignant heterologous elements were not observed. Therefore, as some but not all malignant histological characteristics were present, we diagnosed the patient with borderline GPT.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is characterized by intense deposition of fat globules in the hepatic parenchyma that could potentially progress to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Here, we evaluated a rat model to study the molecular pathogenesis of the spectrum of MASLD and to screen therapeutic agents.
