Objectives: Gastrointestinal hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), gastric inhibitory polypeptide, and peptide YY (PYY) are important for reducing malnutrition at older ages because they are related to assimilation and feeding behavior. Medium-chain triacylglycerol (MCT) ameliorates metabolic symptoms and frailty in adults; however, whether it has the same effect in old age is unknown. In yeast, ras-like small G proteins, Gtr1p and Gtr2p, form heterodimers that affect cell division, detect amino acids, and regulate the activity of TORC1, a protein complex that integrates various signals, including those related to nutrient availability, growth factors, and stress signals. To explore novel roles of Gtr2p, yeast two-hybrid screening was performed using gtr2S23Np, an active form of Gtr2p, which identified Rps31p and Rpl12p as Gtr2p-interacting proteins. In the present study, we found that Gtr2p, but not Gtr1p, interacts with Rps31p, a 40S ribosomal subunit, and a component of the ubiquitin fusion protein Ubi3p, which is essential for the initiation and elongation of translation.

Background/aim: Under severe hypoxia, cellular apoptosis is induced through hypoxia-inducible factor 1, alpha subunit (HIF-1α)-dependent P53 accumulation and P53 phosphorylation via ataxia telangiectasia mutated and ataxia telangiectasia and RAD3-related (ATR) activation via replication stress-induced DNA damage response (DDR) activation. We previously demonstrated that the topoisomerase I catalytic inhibitor, 3-O-(2'E,4'Z-decadienoyl)-20-O-acetylingenol (3EZ,20Ac-ingenol), induced apoptosis in Jeko-1 and Panc-1 cells, both of which show cyclin D1 overexpression. After progression to the S phase facilitated by nuclear cyclin D1, an intra S phase checkpoint was induced in the presence of 3EZ,20Ac-ingenol, by ATR activation in response to replication stress-induced DDR.

The daily consumption of iodine in Japan is higher than in most countries, and there are few reports on iodine metabolism and variance of habitual iodine ingestion in an iodine-sufficient area. To elucidate the patterns of short-term urinary iodine excretion (UIE) and long-term variability of habitual iodine intake, the urinary iodine excretion process after a high dietary iodine load of 3 mg was observed in eight Japanese adults under strict supervision with complete urine collections for three days. The hunting activities of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) at Mahale Mountains National Park exhibited a significant change over a 46-year observation period, shifting from sporadic hunting for small ungulates and primates through seizure or chasing, to a specialized hunting habit for red colobus (Piliocolobus rufomitratus). By the early 1980s, a new hunting habit had developed through the following stages: (1) occasional single kills by mature/adolescent males, (2) multiple kills by mature/adolescent males, (3) participation of mature females in both multiple and single kills, and (4) increased frequencies of multiple kills and female participation in killing. This research investigated how children build up the language-specific system of the color lexicon, examining factors that play important roles for the construction of an adult-like color lexicon. We had 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old Japanese-speaking children and adults (n = 20, 18, 19, and 19, respectively) produce names for 93 color swatches. The results showed that children of all ages were able to apply most of the chromatic words to the colors close to the center of each category, but even 5-year-olds struggle to delineate the boundaries between the words.

This study reports the first observed case of wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) obtaining animal prey freshly killed by a sympatric leopard (Panthera pardus) and scavenging it with the leopard still nearby. This observation has important implications for the emergence of confrontational scavenging, which may have played a significant role in human evolution.
