Significance of AT1 receptor independent activation of mineralocorticoid receptor in murine diabetic cardiomyopathy.

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) has deleterious influence on cardiac performance independent of coronary artery disease and hypertension. The objective of the present study was to investigate the role of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, especially angiotensin II type 1a receptor (AT1aR) and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) signaling, in left ventricular (LV) dysfunction induced by diabetes mellitus (DM).

Methods And Results: DM was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin (200 mg/kg BW) in wild-type (WT) or AT1aR knockout (KO) male mice, and they were bred during 6 or 12 weeks.

[Translational research in anesthesiology: preface and comments].

According to Wikipedia, translational research is scientific research that facilitates the translation of findings from basic science to practical applications that enhance human health and well-being. In this special issue, the topic of translational research in anesthesiology was featured. Six subtopics including 1) adaptation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells to central nerve injury, 2) signaling of granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor and its clinical application: host-defense and organ protection, 3) molecular mechanisms of chronic pain and its therapeutic strategy, 4) endoplasmic reticulum stress and opioid tolerance, 5) relationships of damage-associated molecular patterns and organ injury, and 6) translational research in omics science to clinical anesthesia, are presented and discussed in detail.

The swallowing reflex and its significance as an airway defensive reflex.

Swallowing function, in humans, is very complex. Swallowing plays, not only an important role in food digestion, but also a major role in preventing the entrance of food and/or other materials into the lower respiratory tract. To achieve this, precise coordination is necessary between breathing and swallowing since the pharynx serves as a common pathway for both respiration and digestion.

[Prediction of bone strength using a quantitative computed tomography based finite element method].

Clinically available methods for estimating bone strength include bone densitometry techniques such as dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and quantitative computed tomography, and other diagnostic imaging procedures such as radiographic imaging. These techniques evaluate regional bone density and morphology, which are partly related to fracture risk, but are of limited value for quantifying structural strength. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a noninvasive method for accurate quantitative structural analysis that incorporates information on both morphology and bone density in a three-dimensional distribution.

[Two cases of advanced colorectal cancer which demonstrated the reversibility of oxaliplatin-mediated increase in splenic volume].

Hepatic sinusoidal injury arises occasionally after oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy. As a result, portal hypertension associated with splenomegaly occurs in some cases. We report two cases of advanced colorectal cancer which showed splenomegaly after administration of oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy.

Therapeutic approaches targeting tumor vasculature in gastrointestinal cancers.

Antiangiogenic therapy, especially anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibody therapy, has become an important treatment option for the management of a number of human malignancies including some gastrointestinal tumors. However, there have been many cases of resistance observed against anti-VEGF antibody treatment. As to the first reason, some types of advanced colon cancers do not upregulate VEGF.

[Two cases of colorectal cancer presenting with periodic, transient elevation of serum iron after chemotherapy including irinotecan].

It is known that the serum iron level shows a transient elevation after chemotherapy in some cases; however, the cause of this phenomenon has not been clearly described. We report two cases of colorectal cancer whose serum iron level demonstrated recurrent elevation after administration of irinotecan as a second-line chemotherapy. The transferrin saturation rate showed marked elevation together with serum iron.

[A case of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma with penicillin allergy successfully treated with levofloxacin, minomycin and rabeprazole].

A 52-year-old Japanese woman was referred to our Institute because of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori)-positive gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue(MALT)lymphoma. Since she had a penicillin allergy, we could not eradicate H.

Effects of long-acting beraprost sodium (TRK-100STP) in Japanese patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

The long-acting beraprost preparation TRK-100STP is formulated to provide sustained release of an orally active prostacyclin derivative to maintain the optimal plasma concentration for a longer period of time compared with the currently used conventional beraprost sodium. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy of this newly developed formulation for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).An open-label, 12-week multicenter clinical trial was performed in 46 patients with PAH.

[A case of psuedocyst of the pancreas suspected to lung abscess].

A 83-year-old man visited a physician because of appetite loss. The chest X-ray film showed a cavity with air-fluids sign in the left lower lung field. He was admitted to our hospital for diagnosis of the cavity lesion on a suspicion of pulmonary abscess and pulmonary tuberculosis.
