Background Although diabetes attenuates abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs), the mechanisms by which diabetes suppresses AAAs remain incompletely understood. Accumulation of advanced glycation end- (AGEs) reduces extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation in diabetes. Because ECM degradation is critical for AAA pathogenesis, we investigated whether AGEs mediate experimental AAA suppression in diabetes by blocking AGE formation or disrupting AGE-ECM cross-linking using small molecule inhibitors.

Insomnia is associated with adverse outcomes in women in the perinatal period; thus, the assessment of insomnia is important for pregnant women. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) is an instrument used globally to assess the severity of insomnia. However, its factor structure and structural invariance for pregnant women have not been studied.

Patients with heart disease are more likely to experience social frailty due to physical inactivity, which may affect meaningful activities such as hobbies. This study aimed to investigate (1) the association between heart disease and social frailty in community-dwelling older adults and (2) the characteristics of meaningful activities in community-dwelling older adults with heart disease. Data from 630 older adults who participated in a community-based health survey were obtained, including clinical history, meaningful activities, social frailty and psychosomatic functions.

Background/aim: To assess the efficacy of novel therapeutic agents, such as androgen receptor axis-targeted agents (ARATs) and cabazitaxel, for relapse of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) after docetaxel in real-world practice, we performed a subanalysis using database from PROSTAT-BSI, a prospective observational study to evaluate the utility of software for quantifying bone metastases on bone scintigraphy.
Patients And Methods: Patients with clinically relapsed mCRPC after docetaxel treatment who received the new agents (NEW group) and those who did not (standard of care, SOC group) were included; patients who received ARAT before DOC treatment were excluded. Overall survival (OS) after docetaxel treatment was compared between the NEW and SOC groups.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate premorbid temperaments to predict postpartum depression in pregnant women with no previous psychiatric history and to clarify the correlation between postpartum depression and the factors included in the Postpartum Depression Predictors Inventory-Revised (PDPI-R) and the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego-Auto questionnaire (TEMPS-A)/Munich Personality Test (MPT).
Methods: A total of 170 eligible pregnant women filled out both questionnaires, the first between the 8th and 23rd week of gestation, and the latter between the 34th and 38th week of gestation. Participants filled out The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) one month postpartum to measure for postpartum depression symptoms.

Background: This study was designed to investigate the relationship between right ventricular wall stress (RVWS) and plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels in patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH).
Methods and results: The 57 consecutive PH patients and 8 control subjects were enrolled. Right heart catheterization (RHC), echocardiography, and BNP measurements were performed, and RVWS and left ventricular wall stress (LVWS) were calculated with the formula based on Laplace's law.

Fabry disease resulting from a deficiency of α-galactosidase A leads to the accumulation of globotriaosylceramide in various organs. Because the disease is an X-linked recessive disorder, males tend to develop more symptoms and more severe symptoms than females. There are also some variants of Fabry disease, and cardiac variant (cardiac Fabry disease) has the dysfunctions only in heart.

Age-associated alterations in the mucosal immune system are generally termed mucosal immunosenescence. The major change seen in the aged mucosa is a failure to elicit an antigen-specific secretory IgA (SIgA) antibody response, which is a central player for host defense from various pathogens at mucosal surfaces. In this regard, it would be a first priority to compensate for mucosal dysregulation in the elderly in order to maintain their health in aging.

Cutaneous angiosarcoma (CAS) is a malignant sarcoma with poor prognosis. Programmed cell death-1 (PD-1)/programmed cell death-1 ligand-1 (PD-L1) expression reflects antitumor immunity, and is associated with patient prognosis in various cancers. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between PD-1/PD-L1 expression and CAS prognosis.

Posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is associated with significant mortality in kidney transplant recipients. PTLD cases associated with poor prognostic factors that are refractory to reduction of immunosuppression generally require chemotherapy and immunotherapy. We present a patient with PTLD who achieved complete remission after reduction of immunosuppression alone despite having a poor prognosis.

Background: The recent Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident was one of more than 200 serious nuclear/radiation incidents (accidents and disasters) that occurred worldwide since 1945. The current Fukushima disaster is in the recovery phase with the decreasing levels of radiation in the environment. However, fears and stigma related to the perceived risk of radiation exposure persist among the general population.

Background: Inferior limbal-conjunctival autograft transplantation has been described as a safe and effective treatment for primary pterygium. However, despite its multiple advantages, routine performance of this technique is difficult because the inferior conjunctiva is often too small to provide enough autograft material. To resolve this issue, we modified a technique, inferior separate limbal-conjunctival autograft transplantation, and evaluated its efficacy and safety

Background/purpose: S-1 is a new oral fluoropyrimidine anticancer agent shown to be effective for pancreatic cancer. In a previous phase I trial, we evaluated the safety of S-1 combined with radiotherapy to determine the maximum tolerated dose and dose-limiting toxicity in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer. The recommended dose of S-1 for phase II trials of chemoradiotherapy was determined as 80 mg/m(2)/day given on days 1-21 of a 28-day cycle.

The efficacy and safety of cerebellar hemorrhage evacuation by key hole craniotomy and the importance of thorough evacuation and irrigation of the hematoma in the fourth ventricle to resolve obstructive hydrocephalus were assessed in 23 patients with spontaneous cerebellar hemorrhage (SCH) greater than 3 cm or with brainstem compression and hydrocephalus. A 5-cm elongated S-shaped scalp incision was made, and a 3-cm key hole craniotomy was performed over a cerebellar convexity area. The hematoma was immediately evacuated through a small corticotomy.

Glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2) is a potent, intestinal-specific trophic hormone. However, the relationship between the dose and timing of GLP-2 administration and these trophic effects is not clear. We investigated the effects of variations in the dose and timing of GLP-2 administration on its intestinal trophic activity.
