Methods: The research was conducted using qualitative induction research methods, and data were collected using semi-structured interview methods. The interviews were conducted between 2017 and 2019.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is usually diagnosed in patients at the age of > 45 years. We aimed to determine the prognosis of patients with HCC at the age of 30-44 years compared with that of patients at a more senior age.
Methods: Based on the Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center database, a total of 1745 patients with HCC were retrospectively enrolled and were assigned to three age groups (30-44, 45-59, and 60-70 years).

Objective: This study aims to delineate the electrophysiological variances between patients with infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) and healthy controls and to devise a predictive model for long-term seizure outcomes.
Methods: The cohort consisted of 30 individuals in the seizure-free group, 23 in the seizure-residual group, and 20 in the control group. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of pretreatment electroencephalography, including the relative power spectrum (rPS), weighted phase-lag index (wPLI), and network metrics.

This study aimed to determine whether more stable electroretinography parameters could be obtained in younger children using skin electrodes placed at the inner canthus and ears compared to using contact lens electrodes. The study included three Japanese patients (two girls and one boy) who presented with epileptic spasms before the age of 3 years. We compared the electroretinography parameters obtained with skin electrodes and contact lens electrodes.

Carbonated drinks have been reported to increase muscle activity during swallowing compared with water. Older adults who habitually consume carbonated drinks may use their swallowing-related muscles to a greater extent, thereby preserving their swallowing function. This study investigated the relationship between habitual carbonated drink intake, amount of carbonated drink consumed, and subjective difficulty in swallowing in community-dwelling older adults.

The microvascular system consists of two cell types: endothelial and mural (pericytes and vascular smooth muscle cells; VSMCs) cells. Communication between endothelial and mural cells plays a pivotal role in the maintenance of vascular homeostasis; however, in vivo molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying mural cell development remain unclear. In this study, we found that macrophages played a crucial role in TGFβ-dependent pericyte-to-VSMC differentiation during retinal vasculature development.

Cabozantinib is a newly developed tyrosine kinase inhibitor, which is applied on patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) unresponsive to conventional tyrosine kinase inhibitors, including lenvatinib. However, the mechanism of cabozantinib efficacy for lenvatinib-resistant tumor cells has not been well established in basic studies. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the mechanisms by which cabozantinib inhibits tumor growth of lenvatinib-resistant hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines in vitro and in vivo.

Thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) plays an important role in glucose metabolism, and its expression is regulated by DNA methylation (DNAm). Although the association between TXNIP DNAm and type 2 diabetes mellitus has been demonstrated in studies with a cross-sectional design, prospective studies are needed. We therefore examined the association between TXNIP DNAm levels and longitudinal changes in glycemic traits by conducting a longitudinal study involving 169 subjects who underwent two health checkups in 2015 and 2019.

Essential trace elements are involved in the pathogenesis of chronic liver disease (CLD), which causes hepatic inflammation, steatosis and fibrosis. The present study investigated the roles of essential trace elements in the pathogenesis of hepatitis C virus-related CLD (CLD-C) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and compared the levels of these trace elements between the two groups. Serum zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), copper (Cu) and ferritin levels were measured in patients with CLD-C (n=66) and NASH (n=26).

Alcohol abuse is associated with several diseases, such as hepatocellular carcinoma, cirrhosis, and extrahepatic malignancies. Recently, we reported albumin platelet product (APP) and modified APP (mAPP) as novel indices of liver fibrosis staging and prognosis in patients without alcoholic liver diseases. This retrospective cohort study aimed to extend application of APP and mAPP in prognosis prediction of patients with alcoholic liver diseases.

The current study assessed the safety and efficacy of molecular targeted agents (MTAs) in the elderly patients with HCC, and identified factors associated with prognosis in a real-world clinical setting.
Methods: In a retrospective observational study, clinical data of patients with unresectable HCC treated with sorafenib or lenvatinib as first-line treatment at our hospital between 2011 and 2022, were investigated.
