Background And Study Aims: Polypoid lesions of the gallbladder can be diagnosed by transabdominal ultrasonography and endoscopic ultrasonography. However, the image resolution is limited, and the histopathology of these lesions is difficult to determine. We report here on our preliminary results in four patients using a high-frequency (20 MHz) ultrasonic microprobe introduced into the gallbladder via the transpapillary approach.

Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is an autosomal recessive lipid storage disease caused by mutations in the cytochrome P450(27) (CYP27) gene. This disease is characterized by the accumulation of a bile alcohol, cholestanol, in diverse tissues. Accumulation in the central nervous system leads to neurological dysfunction including dementia, spinal cord paresis, and cerebellar ataxia.

The effects of cold preservation and reperfusion of the liver on the hepatic microsomal cytochrome P-450-linked monooxygenase system (P-450 system) were investigated. Rat livers were preserved with cold University of Wisconsin solution for 0, 12, 24, 36, and 48 hr. Half of them in 0-, 24-, and 48-hr groups were reperfused for 1 hr at 37 degrees C with oxygenated Krebs-Henseleit buffer.

We have previously reported that vasopressin (AVP) V2 receptor stimulation increased renal blood flow in dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital. In this study, we examined the direct effects of AVP on afferent arterioles to clarify the role played by V2 receptors in regulating afferent arteriolar tone. We microdissected a superficial afferent arteriole with glomerulus from the kidney of a New Zealand White rabbit.

To find candidates for the mediator of the growth-promoting action of androgen in rat prostates, the changes in the steady-state levels of mRNAs coding for several growth factors and their receptors were examined by Northern blot analysis during castration-induced involution, and subsequent regrowth induced by androgen in the ventral and dorsolateral lobes. The changes in the growth factor systems and a typical secretory protein in the ventral lobe were similar to, but more prominent than, those in the dorsolateral lobe, showing the higher androgen dependency of the ventral lobe. Among the growth factors and their receptors investigated, only epidermal growth factor (EGF) showed apparent positive androgen dependency: EGF mRNA content in the ventral lobe decreased to about 30% of the normal level within 24 hr after castration, and increased, attaining about 200-300% of the normal level 3-5 days after androgen administration to castrated rats.

Immunosuppressant agent FK506 has been reported to stimulate ACTH release from pituitary cells. We examined the effects of FK506 on GH release from the rat anterior pituitary cells and the effects of FK506 on hypothalamic GH- releasing hormone (GRH) and somatostatin (SS) gene expression in conscious male rats. In vitro experiments, the monolayer pituitary culture and reverse hemolytic plaque assay were employed to examine the GH release from the rat anterior pituitary cells.

We examined the biologic properties of a small-cell-lung-carcinoma (SCLC) cell line (designated MN-1112) established from a patient with SCLC who showed paraneoplastic retinopathy syndrome. Morphologic and immunocytochemical analyses showed that MN-1112 cells possess features of the classic type of SCLC. MN-1112 cells grew in suspension forming relatively large clumps of cells with a doubling time of 72 hr.

The response of renal sympathetic nerve activity (RNA) to hemorrhage was examined in chronically-instrumented conscious rabbits. Hemorrhage was induced at a rate of 5 ml/kg per min until the mean arterial pressure fell below 40 mmHg. The mean arterial pressure then remained at around 80 mmHg until 10 ml/kg of hemorrhage (normotensive hemorrhage) before falling to below the pre-hemorrhagic control level (hypotensive hemorrhage).

Macromolecular activators of phagocytosis from platelets (MAPP) were not released from platelets prepared from platelet concentrates (PC) obtained after anticoagulation with CPD solution and stored for more than 48 h. The MAPP activity which had escaped into the plasma disappeared after 72 h of storage. After incubation in dialyzed and Ca(2+)-supplemented plasma prepared from the same PC or from fresh peripheral blood, the platelets obtained after storage for 72 h released both MAPP (l-MAPP and s-MAPP) upon thrombin stimulation.

The expression of PCNA in brain tumor cells was measured in vitro and in situ by using an electrophoretical immunoblotting method and an immunohistochemical staining method. In synchronized C6 rat glioma cells, PCNA were almost parallel to the S phase, although the small amounts of PCNA were expressed in G1 and G2 x M phases. In astrocytic tumors from operative tissues, immunohistochemical PCNA positive rate increased significantly with increasing tumor grade.
