Rationale: A recent study by our group found that women displayed greater attentional bias to alcohol-related cues during the late versus early follicular phase in both sober and intoxicated states, suggesting a greater risk of excessive drinking among women during this phase. Changes in attentional bias as a function of menstrual cycle phase raise questions about potential sex differences in the relative consistency by which women and men display attentional bias to alcohol over time.

Objectives: The present study tested sex differences in attentional bias to alcohol by comparing the change in women's attentional bias from early to late follicular phase to that observed in men over the same period.

Objectives: Despite a rich history of behavioral economic research on substance use there remains a need for further exploration of behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the etiology or persistence of substance use disorder. The purpose of this study was to measure the association between delay discounting and the endowment effect in people who smoke cigarettes, use cocaine, and controls, using online crowdsourcing.

Impulsive behavior can be measured by performance on a successive delay-discounting task, in which a response to a stimulus provides a small reinforcer sooner (SS), but in the absence of a response, a larger reinforcer later (LL). Previous research suggests that the presence of a concurrent "distractor" stimulus, to which responding has no programed consequence, can result in increased LL reinforcers. In the present experiments, we used differences in the probability of reinforcement between SS and LL (rather than magnitude of reinforcement) and tested the hypothesis that the concurrent stimulus may become a Pavlovian conditioned stimulus.

Preclinical research has sought to understand the role of the orexin system in cocaine addiction given the connection between orexin producing cells in the lateral hypothalamus and brain limbic areas. Exogenous administration of orexin peptides increased cocaine self-administration whereas selective orexin-1 receptor antagonists reduced cocaine self-administration in non-human animals. The first clinically available orexin antagonist, suvorexant (a dual orexin-1 and orexin-2 receptor antagonist), attenuated motivation for cocaine and cocaine conditioned place preference, as well as cocaine-associated impulsive responding, in rodents.

Pavlovian processes are likely responsible for the varied contexts in which contrast occurs between what is expected and what is obtained. Such contrast effects result in paradoxical biases and even suboptimal choice by animals. For example, pigeons prefer a suboptimal alternative that results in a stimulus signaling a low probability (20%) high reward (ten pellets) over an optimal alternative that results in a stimulus signaling a high probability (100%) of a smaller reward (three pellets).

This study tested whether aerobic exercise delivered during the consolidation window following fear extinction learning reduces the return of fear among women with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants (n=35) completed an initial clinical assessment followed by a 3-day fear acquisition, extinction, and recall protocol. On day 1, participants completed a fear acquisition training task in which one geometric shape (conditioning stimulus; CS+) was paired (with 50% probability) with a mild electric shock (unconditioned stimulus; US), while a different shape (CS-) was never paired with the US.
