From breast cancer diagnosis to survivorship: Analyzing perioperative biopsychosocial phenotypes and their relationship to pain on long term.

J Pain

October 2024

MOVANT, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Antwerp, Wilrijk, Belgium; Pain in Motion International Research Group, Belgium. Electronic address:

Persistent breast cancer treatment-related pain affects up to 40% of patients, decreasing their quality of life (QoL). While current research typically utilizes correlation and regression analysis to identify biopsychosocial phenotypes contributing to this pain, this study employs cluster analysis to identify qualitatively different phenotypes based on somatosensory and psychosocial characteristics both before and one week post-breast cancer surgery. Further, it investigates how these phenotypes are related to pain intensity one year post-surgery and examines the evolution of phenotype membership from pre- to post-surgery.

Despite the increasing inclusion of communication skills in accreditation standards and an increase in time dedicated to teaching these skills, communication is often regarded as a separate skill and is therefore, not consistently represented in overall systems of assessment in Health Professions Education (HPE). The ascendence of competency-based medical education, programmatic assessment, artificial intelligence, and widespread use of telehealth, alongside changing patient expectations warrant an update in thinking about the assessment of communication skills in health professions education. This consensus statement draws on existing literature, expert pinion, and emerging challenges to situate the assessment of communication skills in the contemporary health professions education context.

A pathogenic mutation in the ALS/FTD gene VCP induces mitochondrial hypermetabolism by modulating the permeability transition pore.

Acta Neuropathol Commun

October 2024

Laboratory of Neurobiology, Department of Neurosciences, Experimental Neurology and Leuven Brain Institute (LBI), KU Leuven - University of Leuven, Leuven, Belgium.

Article Synopsis
  • Valosin-containing protein (VCP) is linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and this study investigates how a mutation in VCP affects mitochondrial function using CRISPR/Cas9 in neuroblastoma cells.
  • The mutated cells show enlarged mitochondria with a depolarized membrane potential, leading to increased respiration and heightened activity in the electron transport chain.
  • The findings suggest that VCP mutations may cause mitochondrial hypermetabolism through changes in the permeability transition pore (mPTP), impacting mitochondrial function and contributing to disease progression.

Music Listening as Exploratory Behavior: From Dispositional Reactions to Epistemic Interactions with the Sonic World.

Behav Sci (Basel)

September 2024

Institute Audiology Section, School of Population Health, University of Auckland, Auckland 2011, New Zealand.

Listening to music can span a continuum from passive consumption to active exploration, relying on processes of coping with the sounds as well as higher-level processes of sense-making. Revolving around the major questions of "what" and "how" to explore, this paper takes a naturalistic stance toward music listening, providing tools to objectively describe the underlying mechanisms of musical sense-making by weakening the distinction between music and non-music. Starting from a non-exclusionary conception of "coping" with the sounds, it stresses the exploratory approach of treating music as a sound environment to be discovered by an attentive listener.

Prior research suggests that secure base script knowledge is categorically distributed in middle childhood but becomes dimensionally distributed from late adolescence onward, potentially indicating a developmental shift in the nature of secure base script knowledge. Secure base script knowledge may initially be sparse, giving rise to categorical individual differences, while increased relational experiences later in development might contribute to more elaborated secure base script knowledge and dimensional individual differences. However, the cross-sectional nature of prior research limits inferences about developmental changes.
