A rare case of synchronous leiomyosarcoma and urothelial cancer of the bladder.

We report a case of a 44-year-old woman who had coexisting distinct and separate primary tumors of the bladder: a leiomyosarcoma and a transitional cell carcinoma (urothelial cancer). The patient presented with macroscopic hematuria. A computed tomography scan of the pelvis showed a bladder mass along the left anterolateral wall.

Ki-67 protein expression in smokeless tobacco (maras powder)-induced oral mucosal lesions.

Unlabelled: ABSTRACT Objective: Many different forms of smokeless tobacco are used in the world. An interesting kind of smokeless tobacco (Maras powder) is used commonly in lieu of cigarettes in Kahramanmaras and its environs, in Turkey. The object of the present study was to investigate the effects of the Maras powder (MP) on oral mucosa and to examine the expression of Ki-67 in oral mucosa samples taken from MP users.

Symptomatic vertebral hemangioma related to pregnancy.

In this paper, we report a case of vertebral hemangioma during pregnancy in a 21-year-old woman presenting with paraparesis of rapid onset. An emergency MRI scan of the dorsal spine showed a lesion of the ninth thoracic vertebra with extradural extension and marked spinal cord compression. A cesarean section was done, and this was followed by emergent laminectomy.

Bilateral orbital emphysema and pneumocephalus as a result of accidental compressed air exposure.

Orbital emphysema is a rare condition in the absence of trauma or sinus disease. A 22-year-old man suffering from left orbital trauma due to sudden exposure to compressed air tube was admitted with severe pain in the left eye, swelling, and mild periorbital ecchymosis. Physical examination revealed a large conjunctival laceration in the left orbit.

Are changes in urinary parameters during pregnancy clinically significant?

We aimed to objectively determine changes in the various urinary parameters along with CaOx saturation level during pregnancy. The study included 15 pregnant women who had no known diseases and were taking no medication except prenatal supplements. Mean age of the patients was 26 years (range 20-30).

Role of tamsulosin in treatment of patients with steinstrasse developing after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

Objectives: To evaluate whether tamsulosin, as an alpha(1)-blocker, was effective for the treatment of steinstrasse in the lower ureter after shock wave lithotripsy.

Methods: A total of 67 patients (43 men and 24 women) with steinstrasse in the lower portion of the ureters were randomly divided into two groups. Only hydration and tenoxicam (20 mg orally once daily) was given to group 1 (35 patients).

Landmarks of the sacral hiatus for caudal epidural block: an anatomical study.

Background: This study determined the landmarks for caudal epidural block (CEB) after morphometric measurements of the sacral hiatus on dry sacral bones. Anatomical features of the sacral hiatus of clinical importance during CEB, along with distances and angles of use in detecting the apex, were measured. This provides detailed knowledge of the anatomy of the sacral hiatus and practical landmarks.

Effect of tamsulosin on the number and intensity of ureteral colic in patients with lower ureteral calculus.

Background: We aimed to objectively determine whether tamsulosin as an alpha(1)-blocker was effective in patients who had ureterolithiasis located in the lower part of the ureter.

Methods: Sixty patients with lower ureteral calculi (juxtavesical or intramural portion) were included in the present study. Conservative treatment, such as hydration and tenoxicam as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, was given to group 1 (30 patients).

Effectiveness of electro-acupuncture compared to sedo-analgesics in relieving pain during shockwave lithotripsy.

The aim of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of electro-acupuncture (EA) with the combination of tramadol+midazolam (TM) for pain relief during outpatient extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL). A total of 35 patients (20 men, 15 women) with stones located in the pelvicalyceal system of the kidney were randomized prospectively to undergo lithotripsy with a third generation lithotriptor (Stone Lith, smart PCK) after receiving either EA (n=17) or TM (n=18) for sedation and analgesia. EA treatment was applied to patients by the same licensed acupuncturist 30 min prior to ESWL in group EA.

Incisional hernia: a possible complication after the orthotopic urinary diversion?

Aim: One of the complications of abdominal surgical procedures is incisional hernia. This complication is encountered in different rates due to the surgical technique, type of urinary diversion preferred, and whether the patient has additional risk factors or not.

Patients And Methods: In this study, 145 patients who had undergone urinary diversions in our clinic were evaluated between the years 1989 and 2002.

Serum nitrite and nitrate levels in epileptic children using valproic acid or carbamazepine.

In experimental epilepsy studies, nitric oxide was found to act as both proconvulsant and anticonvulsant. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of valproic acid and carbamazepine on serum levels of nitrite and nitrate, which are the metabolites of nitric oxide. To achieve this goal, serum nitrite and nitrate levels were determined in active epileptic 34 children using valproic acid and 23 children using carbamazepine and in non-active epileptic 38 children (control group) not using any antiepileptic drug.

Head circumference measurement of urban children aged between 6 and 12 in Malatya, Turkey.

Head circumference (HC) is one of the most significant findings in physical examination, especially in the evaluation of the development and early diagnosis of neurological disorders in children. In the standard charts for developmental evaluation of Turkish children, there is no HC reference values for children over 6 years of age. Since the HC standards show differences among races and generations, many researchers have obtained normal values for their own populations, and recommend periodic reevaluation of these standards.
