The emergence of zoonotic monkeypox (MPX) disease, caused by the double-stranded DNA monkeypox virus (MPXV), has become a global threat. Due to unavailability of a specific small molecule drug for MPX, this study investigated phytochemicals to find potent and safe inhibitors of DNA Polymerase (DNA Pol), a poxvirus drug target due to its role in the viral life cycle. For that, 146 phytochemicals were screened through drug-likeness and molecular docking analyses.

Therapeutic options to contain seizures, a transitional stage of many neuropathologies, are limited due to the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Herbal nanoparticle formulations can be employed to enhance seizure prognosis. Bacoside A (BM3) and bacopaside I (BM4) were isolated from Bacopa monnieri and synthesized as nanoparticles (BM3NP and BM4NP, respectively) for an effective delivery system to alleviate seizures and associated conditions.

Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Saraswathy Thangavelu Extension Centre, A Research Centre of University of Kerala, KSCSTE-Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute, Puthenthope, Thiruvananthapuram, India.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a prominent target for anticancer therapy due to its role in activating several cell signaling cascades. Clinically approved EGFR inhibitors are reported to show treatment resistance and toxicity, this study, therefore, investigates phytochemicals to find potent and safe anti-EGFR compounds. For that, phytochemicals were screened based on drug-likeness and molecular docking analysis followed by molecular dynamics simulation, density functional theory analysis and ADMET analysis to identify the effective inhibitors of EGFR tyrosine kinase (EGFR-TK) domain.

Background: Over the last few decades, there has been a stupendous change in the area of drug delivery using particulate delivery systems, with increasing focus on nanoparticles in recent times. Nanoparticles help to improve and alter the pharmacodynamic properties and pharmacokinetics of various types of drug molecules. These features help to protect the drug entity in the systemic circulation, access of the drug to the chosen sites, and to deliver the drug in a controlled and sustained rate at the site of action.

June 2020

Phytochemistry and Phytopharmacology Division, KSCSTE - Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute (Research Centre, University of Kerala), Palode, Thiruvananthapuram, 695 562 Kerala, India. Electronic address:

Two new caged xanthones, wightiic acid (1) 16-O-methyl wightiic acid (2), along with eight known compounds, gaudichaudic acid E (3), isogaudichaudic acid E (4), ursolic acid (5) stigmasterol (6), lupeol (7), glutinol (8), lupenone (9) and stigmasteryl linoleate (10) were isolated from Garcinia wightii T. Anderson. The structures of the compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic means, including 1D and 2D NMR, HR-ESIMS, and the absolute configuration of the new compounds 1 and 2 were determined by analysis of ECD data.
