Institute of Medical Genetics and Applied Genomics, University of Tübingen, 72076 Tübingen, Germany; Center for Rare Disease, University of Tübingen, 72076 Tübingen, Germany; Genomics for Health in Africa (GHA), Africa-Europe Cluster of Research Excellence (CoRE).

Inborn errors of selenoprotein expression arise from deleterious variants in genes encoding selenoproteins or selenoprotein biosynthetic factors, some of which are associated with neurodegenerative disorders. This study shows that bi-allelic selenocysteine tRNA-specific eukaryotic elongation factor (EEFSEC) variants cause selenoprotein deficiency, leading to progressive neurodegeneration. EEFSEC deficiency, an autosomal recessive disorder, manifests with global developmental delay, progressive spasticity, ataxia, and seizures.

Background And Objectives: Ecopipam is a selective antagonist of the dopamine D1 receptor, and its efficacy and safety have recently been explored in several clinical trials involving patients with Tourette syndrome (TS). The objectives of this systematic review were to determine the pooled estimate for efficacy [in terms of reduction in tic Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) scores] and safety of oral ecopipam in subjects with TS.

Methods: All clinical trials that explored the efficacy and/or safety of ecopipam in patients with TS were included to determine the pooled estimate for change in YGTSS, Clinical Global Impression (CGI)-TS, and the severity of comorbid attention-deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), obsessive compulsion disorder (OCD), and depressive symptoms, as well as the nature and frequency of adverse effects.

Article Synopsis
  • Oral health has a crucial impact on overall well-being, with a growing burden of oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease in Saudi Arabia due to lifestyle changes.
  • The study aims to investigate both direct (proximal) and indirect (distal) factors that influence oral pain (OP) and self-rated oral health (SROH) among different age groups in Saudi Arabia, using data from a national health survey conducted in 2017.
  • Findings reveal a notable discrepancy where a high percentage of respondents rated their oral health positively despite reporting oral pain, with tooth brushing frequency strongly linked to lower OP and better SROH, while sugar consumption negatively affected oral health across ages.

In this study, the use of functionalized graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as a fluorescent probe has been investigated for the quantitative determination of galantamine, a choline esterase inhibitor used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The GQDs exhibit a significant quenching in their fluorescence intensity upon interaction with galantamine allowing for sensitive and selective detection of the drug. This quenching process follows a dynamic pattern with a linear relationship between fluorescence intensity and the concentration of galantamine.
