Article Synopsis
  • Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a genetic immune disorder leading to frequent infections, inherited in either X-linked or autosomal recessive forms, and this study explores the differences in symptoms (phenotypes) between these two forms using Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO) terms.
  • Data from 90 genetically diagnosed CGD patients from Asia and Africa were analyzed to compare the onset and types of infections experienced by X-linked (XL) and autosomal recessive (AR) patients.
  • Findings revealed that XL-CGD patients tend to have earlier onset and more severe infections, with specific symptoms like perianal abscess and BCGitis being more common, highlighting the need for distinguishing features for clinical diagnosis.

Molecular determinants of disease severity in urinary tract infection.

Nat Rev Urol

August 2021

Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Glycobiology, Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Lund University, Lund, Sweden.

The most common and lethal bacterial pathogens have co-evolved with the host. Pathogens are the aggressors, and the host immune system is responsible for the defence. However, immune responses can also become destructive, and excessive innate immune activation is a major cause of infection-associated morbidity, exemplified by symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are caused, in part, by excessive innate immune activation.

We report on the decade-long therapeutic journey of a 15-year-old boy with SFH due to a severe compound heterozygous genotype. He presented at the age of 5 years with widespread xanthomas and LDL-C of 17.

This paper describes country-wide special measures undertaken for interventional radiology staff during the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Although each interventional radiology service around the world faces unique challenges, the principles outlined in this article will be useful when designing or strengthening individual practices and integrating them within wider hospital and national measures. Moving beyond the current outbreak, these measures will be useful for any future infectious diseases which are likely to arise.

Background: Infections with human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18 account for ~70% of invasive cervical cancers but the degree of protection from naturally acquired anti-HPV antibodies is uncertain. We examined the risk of HPV infections as defined by HPV DNA detection and cervical abnormalities among women >25 years in the Human Papilloma VIrus Vaccine Immunogenicity ANd Efficacy trial's (VIVIANE, NCT00294047) control arm.

Methods: Serum anti-HPV-16/18 antibodies were determined at baseline and every 12 months in baseline DNA-negative women (N = 2687 for HPV-16 and 2705 for HPV-18) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) from blood samples.

Exclusive enteral nutrition with concomitant early thiopurine use was effective in maintaining steroid-free remission in a Southeast Asian cohort of children with Crohn's disease.

BMC Gastroenterol

December 2018

Gastroenterology Service, Department of Paediatric Medicine, KK Women's and Children's Hospital, KK Hospital, 100 Bukit Timah Road, Singapore, 229899, Singapore.

Background: Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) is as effective as corticosteroids in inducing remission in children with Crohn's disease (CD). However, over 50% of these children relapse by 12 months of diagnosis. Thiopurines are commonly prescribed as maintenance therapy for CD, but evidence for its efficacy is controversial.

Two classes of Human papillomaviruses (HPV) infect the anogenital track: high risk viruses that are associated with risk of cervical cancer and low risk types that drive development of benign lesions, such as condylomas. In the present study, we established quantitative transcriptional maps of the viral genome in clinical lesions associated with high risk HPV16 or low risk HPV6b. Marked qualitative and quantitative changes in the HPV16 transcriptome were associated with progression from low to high grade lesions.

Purpose: To survey caregivers with regard to the pain they perceived their children were having during the removal of the percutaneous Kirschner wires, as well as the need for analgesia.

Methods: 23 male and 18 female patients aged 1 to 15 (mean, 7) years who underwent closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner wire fixation for elbow fractures and subsequent removal of the wires were included. Before the removal procedure, caregivers of these patients were asked to select one of 4 options for the procedure: no analgesia, paracetamol, sedation, and general anaesthesia.

Pallister-Killian syndrome (PKS) is a potentially lethal disorder with facial dysmorphism, pigmentary skin anomalies, developmental delay and major visceral anomalies, such as diaphragmatic hernia, anorectal malformation, and congenital heart disease. PKS is causally associated with mosaic tetrasomy of chromosome 12p. A routine chromosome analysis in peripheral lymphocytes usually fails to detect the mosaic state.
