The likelihood of antimicrobial failure in COVID-19 patients with bacterial superinfection arises from both phenotypic (biofilms) and genotypic mechanisms. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the inhibitory concentrations of quinolones-nalidixic acid, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and levofloxacin-in biofilm formers (minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration [MBIC]) and nonformers (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC]) and correlate inhibitory concentrations with plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes in quinolone-resistant bacteria isolated from COVID-19 inpatients. Quinolone-resistant bacteria (n = 193), verified through disc diffusion, were tested for quinolone inhibitory concentrations using broth microdilution and biofilm formation using microtiter plate methods.

This case report presents a 53-year-old female patient with a history of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) who developed chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) following an allogeneic bone marrow transplant, leading to significant respiratory distress and notable skin findings, including hyperpigmentation and chronic non-healing ulcers. The patient's clinical course illustrates the diverse manifestations of cGVHD, emphasizing the importance of recognizing that not all febrile episodes in post-transplant patients are attributable solely to infection. A multidisciplinary approach was essential for accurate diagnosis and management, underscoring the need for comprehensive evaluation of symptoms in immunocompromised patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the effectiveness and safety of medication abortion using mifepristone and misoprostol in women up to 42 days of gestation without confirmed intrauterine pregnancy using ultrasound.
  • A total of 1504 women were randomly assigned to either an early-start abortion group or a standard delayed care group, and the primary outcome measured was the rate of complete abortion.
  • The results showed a nearly identical rate of complete abortion between the two groups (95.2% early-start vs 95.3% standard), indicating that starting medication abortion before confirming intrauterine pregnancy is as safe and effective as standard care.

Article Synopsis
  • Fibroblast activation protein (FAP) is found in cancer-associated fibroblasts and is linked to poor cancer outcomes; PET/CT imaging using FAPI (radiolabeled FAP inhibitors) is being explored for diagnosing various cancers.
  • FAPI PET/CT outperforms F-fluorodeoxyglucose ([F]FDG) in many cases due to better tumor-to-background contrast, improved specificity for certain metastases, and enhanced sensitivity for identifying disease spread.
  • Despite its advantages, FAPI has challenges such as non-specific uptake in some situations, variations with age/menopause, limited clinical accessibility, and a lack of extensive clinical data supporting its use.
