Background: Genetic factors are one of the significant contributors to prostate cancer (PCa) development, and hereditary prostate cancer 2 (HPC2) locus gene ELAC2 is considered a PCa susceptibility region. The HPC2/ELAC2 gene has been identified by linkage analysis in familial prostate cancer patients in the United States but has never been studied in Burkina Faso. The objective of the present study was to analyze the carriage of the C650T (Ser217Leu) and G1621A (Ala541Thr) mutations of the ELAC2 gene and the risk factors in prostate cancer patients in Burkina Faso.

November 2022

Applied Biochemistry and Immunology Laboratory (LABIA), Sciences and Technologies Doctoral School, Joseph KI-ZERBO University, 03 BP 7021 03, Ouagadougou 03, Burkina Faso.

The emergence of antimicrobial-resistantfood-borne bacteria is a great challenge to public health. This study was conducted to characterize and determine the resistance profile of Salmonella strains isolated from foods including sesames, ready-to-eat (RTE) salads, mango juices, and lettuce in Burkina Faso. One hundred and forty-eight biochemically identified Salmonella isolates were characterized by molecular amplification of Salmonella marker and , , , and virulence genes.

Aflatoxins are produced by fungi of the genus Aspergillus that colonize many foodstuffs during agricultural production, harvesting, transportation, storage, and food processing. In view of these aflatoxins toxicity to humans, their presence in foods such as cereals and oilseeds constitutes a major challenge for global food security, health and nutrition. This study was therefore initiated to assess the level of aflatoxin contamination of various foodstuffs sold in urban and semi-urban markets in Burkina Faso, and to evaluate the carcinogenic risk which the consuming population is exposed to.

Factors limiting traditional medicine integration into modern health systems in Africa: protocol for a systematic review of qualitative studies.

Public Health

October 2022

Laboratory of Drug Development, Centre for Training, Research and Expertise in Drug Sciences, Doctoral School of Sciences and Health, Joseph Ki-Zerbo University, 03 BP 7021, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Electronic address:

Objectives: It was recognised in the 1978 Alma-Ata Declaration that the integration of traditional medicine into modern health systems is a major lever for achieving universal health coverage. In several African countries, the integration of traditional medicine still faces constraints, despite the development of policies and regulations in favour of this integration. The objective of this study is to conduct a systematic review of the limitations of integrating traditional medicine in Africa.

August 2022

Laboratory of Applied Biochemistry and Immunology, Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology, Joseph Ki-Zerbo University, 03 BP 7021, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Widely used in traditional medicine in Asia and recently introduced in Burkina Faso under the name , mung bean is a legume consumed throughout the world and more so in India. The objective of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of the mung bean grown and consumed in Burkina Faso and to study its biological properties such as anti-inflammatory and anticancer activity of the natural and sprouted seeds. The cytotoxicity of the extracts was tested on larvae, and the anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by albumin denaturation method using diclofenac as reference molecule.

Introduction: Although dengue is the most common arbovirus infection worldwide, studies of severe dengue in Africa are lacking, and risk factors for severe dengue have been insufficiently described. This study was conducted in the context of the 2016 dengue epidemic in Burkina Faso to determine the prevalence of severe dengue, identify factors associated with severe dengue, and perform mapping of dengue cases in the country's capital, Ouagadougou.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2015 to January 2017.

Aortic dissection is a rare but serious condition Its association with pulmonary embolism is exceptional and produces a real therapeutic dilemma. We are discussing the case of a 67-year-old male patient who presented with paraplegia with infectious syndrome. The chest X-ray performed to screen for an infectious site led to the suspicion of an aortic aneurysm and the CT angiography showed Stanford type B aortic dissection associated with bilateral proximal pulmonary embolism.

Falsified drugs are of serious concern to public health worldwide, particularly for developing countries where quality control of drugs is inefficient. In law enforcement against such fake medicines, there is a need to develop reliable, fast, and inexpensive screening methods. In this work, the ability of an innovative low-cost handheld near-infrared spectrometer to identify falsifications among two antimalarial fixed dose combination tablets, dihydroartemisinin/piperaquine and sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine, has been investigated.

Although is a plant widely used in traditional medicine in sub-Saharan Africa, its biological properties have been poorly investigated to date. We first characterized by conventional reactions the composition of several stem bark extracts and evaluated in acellular and cellular assays their pro- or antioxidant properties supported by their high phenolic and flavonoid content, particularly with the methanolic extract. The pro- or antioxidant effects observed did not correlate with their IC concentrations against five cancer cell lines determined by MTT assay.
