Fourth Time Redo Common Femoral Vein Reconstruction with a Novel Hybrid Technique.

Ann Vasc Surg

May 2019

Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, Department of Surgery, Keck Medical Center of USC, Los Angeles, CA. Electronic address:

Background: Iliofemoral vein thrombosis can lead to debilitating edema and venous claudication that significantly worsens quality of life, especially in young active individuals. Venous reconstruction becomes increasingly complex and has worsening patency with subsequent revisions so preoperative planning is critical to success.

Methods: We report a case of a 54-year-old man in active military service with profoundly symptomatic leg swelling after failure of 3 previous common femoral vein (CFV) reconstructions.

Background: The Lewinnek "safe zone" is not always predictive of stability after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Recent studies have focused on functional hip motion as observed on lateral spine-pelvis-hip x-rays. The purpose of this study was to assess the correlation between the Lewinnek safe zone and the functional safe zone based on hip and pelvic motion in the sagittal plane.

Assessment of metallic patient support devices and other items at 7-Tesla: Findings applied to 46 additional devices.

Magn Reson Imaging

April 2019

Department of Radiology, Alfred Hospital, Melbourne Australia; Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, United States of America. Electronic address:

Objective: Recently, the first 7-Tesla MR system was approved for clinical use in Europe and the United States. Unfortunately, few metallic objects have undergone testing in association with this high-field-strength scanner, including essential equipment such as patient support devices and other items. Therefore, the objective of this investigation was to assess metallic patient support devices and other items for translational attraction at 7-Tesla.

To evaluate the feasibility and accuracy of machine learning based texture analysis of unenhanced CT images in differentiating subclinical pheochromocytoma (sPHEO) from lipid-poor adenoma (LPA) in adrenal incidentaloma (AI). Seventy-nine patients with 80 LPA and 29 patients with 30 sPHEO were included in the study. Texture parameters were derived using imaging software (MaZda).

Background:  During reconstructive surgery, anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap harvest is challenging due to variation and uncertainty in perforator distribution. We performed a pilot study to identify the predictive value of catheter-based computed tomography angiography (C-CTA) and traditional CTA (T-CTA) in ALT perforator mapping for patients whose ALT perforators were difficult to identify.

Methods:  Thirty-four consecutive T-CTA/C-CTA-mapped ALT flaps were evaluated for extremity reconstruction.

Reprint of: The pathology of pulmonary sarcoidosis: update.

Semin Diagn Pathol

September 2018

Department of Lung Pathologist, KEck Medical Center of USC, Los Angeles, California. Electronic address:

Sarcoidosis is a multi-system disease of unknown etiology, usually affecting the respiratory tract and other organs, and is characterized by the formation of nonnecrotizing epithelioid granulomas. The diagnosis depends on a combination of a typical clinicoradiological presentation, the finding of nonnecrotizing epithelioid granulomas in a tissue biopsy, and exclusion of other possible diseases, especially those of infectious etiology. The granulomas contain epithelioid cells, giant cells, CD4+ T cells in their center, and CD8+ T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes at their periphery.

Novel Therapies for Sleep Apnea-The Implants Have Arrived!

Neurodiagn J

January 2018

a USC Sleep Disorders Center, Keck Medical Center of USC , University of Southern California, Los Angeles , California.

Positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy has been the standard treatment of choice for sleep disordered breathing, with 29-83% of patients being noncompliant. With the advent of newly Food and Drug Adminisatration (FDA)-approved implantable stimulators for treating sleep disordered breathing in a fraction of noncompliant PAP therapy patients, the landscape of sleep medicine and sleep technology is changing to narrow the gap between compliant and non-compliant patients. The remedē® System for treating central sleep apnea and the Inspire® upper airway stimulation (UAS) therapy for treating obstructive sleep apnea are providing new tools for sleep physicians, elevating sleep technologists' expertise, and paving the way for personalized medicine.

The main purpose of this study is to examine the lifetime tobacco consumption and the degree of nicotine dependence related gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) volume alterations in young adult-male smokers. Fifty-three long-term male smokers and 53 well-matched male healthy non-smokers participated in the study, and the smokers were respectively categorized into light and heavy tobacco consumption subgroups by pack-years and into moderate and severe nicotine dependence subgroups using the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND). Voxel-based morphometry analysis was then performed, and ANCOVA analysis combined with subsequent test were used to explore the between-group brain volume abnormalities related to the smoking amount and nicotine dependence.

Quite a number of studies have examined the effects of fish oil supplementation on cognitive performance in different transgenic animal models of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, inconsistent and controversial outcomes have been derived from these experiments. In order to investigate whether the beneficial effect of fish oil supplementation on cognition was dietary VE status associated, fish oil dietary intervention was carried out in transgenic APP/PS1 (APP/PS1) mice.

Advances in our understanding of the lymphatic system and the pathogenesis of lymphedema have resulted in the development of effective surgical treatments. Vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) involves the microvascular transplantation of functional lymph nodes into an extremity to restore physiological lymphatic function. It is most commonly performed by transferring combined deep inferior epigastric artery perforator and superficial inguinal lymph node flaps for postmastectomy breast reconstruction.

Background: Epidemiology studies have indicated an association of apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genetic polymorphism and circulating steroid hormone levels with the risk of Alzheimer's disease. The established physiologic relationship between apolipoproteins and steroid hormone indicate an important role of ApoE polymorphism in impacting the relationship between serum steroid hormones and cognition in the elderly.

Study Design: A total of 500 Chinese adults aged between 50 and 75 participated in this community-based cross-sectional study.
