The circadian periodicity of plasma lipid peroxide levels and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were studied in 50 clinically, bacteriologically and radiologically proven fresh cases of pulmonary tuberculosis (age: 21-45 years) and 60 age-matched healthy volunteers with diurnal activity from 06∶00 to about 22∶00 and nocturnal rest. A marked circadian variation in plasma lipid peroxide level was recorded in healthy subjects and pulmonary tuberculosis patients with significant amplitude and acrophase around 16∶21 and 17∶12 respectively. The acrophase tended to be delayed in tuberculosis patients.

We studied S-phase fraction (SPF) and aneuploidy in peripheral blood leucocytes of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in chronic phase (CML-CP, n=41), accelerated phase (CML-AP, n=6), and control subjects (n=12) with an aim to find out their role in early detection of accelerated phase. The SPF and aneuploidy were studied through flow-cytometry using LT-Mod. Fit software.

The present study has been undertaken to monitor the extent of oxidative stress in mice infected with M tuberculosis and the role of crude green tea extract in repairing the oxidative damage. The mice were divided into three groups of 9 each; normal, infected-untreated and infected-treated. The infected group of animals exhibited significant enhancement of erythrocytic catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities along with elevated levels of erythrocytic total thiols and plasma lipid peroxidation as compared to normal animals.

Background: Hydatid cysts, the larvae of the parasite Echinococcus granulosus, may lodge in any organ of intermediate hosts, namely, man and sheep. Complete cyst removal is the treatment of choice; however, spillage of fertile cysts during surgery leads to disease recurrence that may be prevented by preoperative detection of the fertility status of the cyst. With this perspective, ex vivo proton (1H) MR spectroscopy of hydatid fluid of human and sheep origin was performed to differentiate fertile from sterile cysts on the basis of their metabolite pattern.

Leukocytes ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity was measured in normal individuals and in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) in chronic phase (CML-CP) as well as in accelerated phase (CML-AP), with an aim to examine the role of ODC activity in prognostic evaluation of CML patients. Our results showed that ODC activity was significantly higher in CML-CP (41.02+/-25.

Platelet 3H ketanserin binding was studied in 33 patients of migraine and 30 healthy controls. The binding characteristics: equilibrium dissociation constant (Kd) and maximal number of binding sites (Bmax) determined by Scatchard analysis revealed a significant decrease in Kd and no change in Bmax in migraine cases. No correlation was observed between the Kd and Bmax with the clinical features of migraine.

The acrofacial dysostosis of nager is a very rare hereditary syndrome in which findings of mandibulofacial dysostosis are associated with defects of the limbs. The developmental defects of the mesoderm if accompany the neurectodermal malformations, result in mental retardation and sensorineural hearing impairment. The conductive type of hearing loss is mostly encountered in Nager's syndrome but here we present a case with sensorineural involvement, along with its analysis of auditory brainstem evoked response audiometry (ABR).

Malignancies of otorhinolaryngology are of utmost importance because of a high incidence and early involvement of lymph nodes. It has been experienced and suggested by various authors that topographical distributions of metastatic lymph node is important not only in patients with undiagnosed primary but also as a significant prognostic factor in cases of known primaries. This is a prospective study based on 200 previously untreated patients of otorhinolaryngological malignancies with clinically suspected metastatic cervical nodes observed during one year period.
