Hypertension, a key modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), significantly contributes to premature death and morbidity worldwide. Despite stabilization in age-adjusted global prevalence, the absolute number of hypertensive individuals doubled from 2000 to 2010, largely due to increases in low- and middle-income countries. In 2021, only 21% of hypertensive individuals globally had effective blood pressure (BP) control.

Article Synopsis
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is linked to the differential expression of microRNAs (DE-miRNAs) in ovarian cumulus cells, which may impact disease progression.* -
  • The study analyzed a microarray dataset to identify 1577 DE-miRNAs, with a focus on 13 that significantly affect 2053 target genes, particularly identifying key hub genes like VEGFA and SOX2 that are crucial for ovarian regulation.* -
  • The research highlights the wnt signaling pathway's role in ovarian function and suggests potential medication interactions for some identified hub genes, while noting the absence of suitable drugs for SOX2.*

Objectives: Specific miRNAs are evident to be overexpressed with age, lifestyle, and environmental changes. Previous studies reported miR-124 overexpression in different scenarios in aged skin, age-related cognitive impairment, ischemic heart disease, muscle atrophy, and fractures. Thus miR-124 was considered to be a reliable miRNA target to establish a hypothesis on aging epigenome.

Oral Squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the 14th most frequent cancer with 300,000 new cases and 100,000 deaths reported annually. Even with advanced therapy, the treatment outcomes are poor at advanced stages of the disease. The diagnosis of early OSCC is of paramount clinical value given the high mortality rate associated with the late stages of the disease.

Theranostic Potential of for Cetuximab Resistance in Head and Neck Cancer.

Indian J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

September 2023

Department of Medical Oncology, K.S. Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital, Nitte (Deemed to be University), Deralakatte, Mangaluru, Karnataka 575018 India.

Unlabelled: Only 13% of head and neck cancer (HNC) patients respond to cetuximab therapy despite its target (EGFR) is expressed in about 80-90% of HNC patients. However, this problem remained unresolved till date despite of numerous efforts. Thus, the current study aimed to establish hub genes involved in cetuximab resistance via series of bioinformatics approach.

COVID-19 patients demonstrating hyperactive immunologic response appear to have a severe illness with a poor prognosis. This study hypothesizes that the pro-inflammatory Annexin A2 (ANXA2) has role in COVID-19 pathogenesis. In thisobservational study, serum levels of ANXA2 along with interleukin 1 beta (IL1β), IL6, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNFα), and anti-inflammatory ANXA1 were determined by sandwich ELISA in 20 each control, mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19 subjects.

Background: Male infertility is a multifactorial reproductive health problem with complex causes. Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is characterized by failure of spermatogenesis, leading to the absence of spermatozoa in ejaculates. The molecular mechanism underlying the NOA is still not well understood.

Head and neck cancer (HNC) is third highest prevalent cancer among Indian which constitutes about 25-30% of all the cancer in India. Further, out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) covers around 67% of total healthcare expenditure and direct medical cost is key factor responsible for raised OOPE in India. Thus, we aimed to quantify total direct medical cost and OOPE associated with HNC management among HNC patients using "Ayushman Bharat Arogya Karnataka scheme" (ABArK scheme).

Department of Radiation Therapy and Oncology, K.S. Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), Justice K.S. Hegde Charitable Hospital, Nitte (Deemed to be University), Deralakatte, Mangaluru, Karnataka, 575018, India.

Background: Cisplatin resistance is one of the major contributors to the poor survival rate among head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. Focusing on the protein-protein interaction rather than a single protein could provide a better understanding of drug resistance. Thus, this study aimed to identify hub genes in a complex network of cisplatin resistance associated genes in HNC chemotherapy via a series of bioinformatic tools.

Unlabelled: The comprehensive bioinformatics analysis of breast cancer exosomes revealed that HSP90AA1, CCT2, and ENO1 were novel hub genes in the giant protein-protein interaction network of 110 exosomal proteins. Exosomes and their cargo such as discrete proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids are having potential role in the pathophysiology of breast cancer (BC). This study showed that the identified hub genes were particularly abundant in GO and KEGG pathways relevant to the positive regulation of telomerase.
