Introduction: Nebulisation therapy plays a key role in the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF). Its effectiveness depends on obtaining a high concentration of drugs in the respiratory tract. Particle deposition is determined by many factors resulting, inter alia, from the essence of the lung disease (mucus, structural changes such as bronchiectasis, fibrous changes, cirrhosis) and the quality of the aerosol and breathing techniques during the procedure.

Unlabelled: The introduction of minimally invasive surgical procedures has significantly reduced the rate of major salivary gland removal due to sialolithiasis. The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of sialoendoscopy, rate of salivary fistula or natural ostium stenosis in parotid sialolithiasis treatment. The endpoint was to analyse the efficiency of a combined transcutaneous and endoscopic approach in the removal of refractory and impacted stones in most difficult cases.

Expression of HOXA-10 and HOXA-11 in the endometria of women with idiopathic infertility.

Folia Histochem Cytobiol

October 2011

Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Gynecological Oncology, Division of Reproduction, K. Marcinkowski Medical University, Poznan, Poland.

In fertile women, HOXA-10 and HOXA-11 expression rises during the luteal phase, with the peak occurring during the implantation window, and stays at a high level until the end of the cycle. We evaluated the transcript and protein levels of HOXA-10 and HOXA-11 in the endometria of patients with idiopathic infertility (n = 15) and control patients (n = 10). The amounts of mRNA were determined by reverse transcription and real-time quantitative PCR.

The role of hormonal therapy in osteoporosis.

Endokrynol Pol

October 2011

Chair and Department of Family Medicine, The K. Marcinkowski Medical University, Poznań, Poland.

In developed societies, the post-menopausal period covers approximately one third of a woman's life. The deficit of oestrogens observed during the post-menopausal period significantly affects the course of many metabolic processes, causing a number of diseases and in consequence diminishing quality of life. Among others, bones belong to oestrogen-dependent tissues.

Objectives And Design: The aim of the study was to document the radiation doses to patients during the implantation of stents in various arteries and to discuss potential reasons for prolongation of radiological procedures.

Materials And Methods: Measurements of air kerma (Gy) and dose-area product (Gy cm²) (DAP) were carried out simultaneously on a sample of 345 patients, who underwent different interventional radiological procedures involving angioplasty with stenting of 73 carotid (21.5%), 22 renal (6.

Purpose: Pain is a serious complication associated with hip dislocation in cerebral palsy (CP), limiting patient independence and quality of life. This study aimed to determine the frequency of pain in severe CP patients with hip dislocation and to reveal factors associated with the hip pain.

Methods: Seventy-three consecutive new-intervention CP patients admitted to authors' institution with spastic quadriplegia, mean age 10.

Objective: Proprotein convertase 6 (PC6) is known to be the key enzyme involved in the transformation of many hormones, cytokines and their receptors into their active forms. Experimental in vitro studies have also proven that lack of PC6 in the endometrium prevents decidualisation. Therefore in our study we have aimed at determining whether infertility in some patients might be attributable to decreased expression of PC6.

Complex analysis of the fluoroscopy time, exposure time, air kerma values and dose-area product (DAP) has been carried out for a very large group of patients (655) undergoing digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for abdominal aorta and lower limb examinations. Measurements have been performed for 206 patients with intravenous (IV DSA) and 449 patients with intra-arterial (IA DSA) contrast administration. The results obtained by the two variations of the DSA technique have been compared.

Comparison of the influence of halothane and isoflurane on airway transepithelial potential difference.

Pharmacol Rep

March 2007

Clinical Department of Anesthesiology, Intensive Therapy and Pain Treatment, K. Marcinkowski Medical University, Przybyszewskiego 49, PL 60-355 Poznań, Poland.

Bidirectional transport of Na+ and Cl- ions by the epithelium controls production and composition of airway surface liquid and airway transepithelial potential difference and in these ways supports mucociliary transport. Volatile anesthetics are able to inhibit epithelial ion transport processes when applied at high concentration and have been suggested to elicit depression of airway clearance and both these effects could be involved in postoperative pulmonary complications. The goal of these studies was to reveal possible influence of halothane and isoflurane at lower concentrations on electrogenic ion transport in airway epithelium.

Oxidative metabolism of peripheral blood neutrophils in experimental acute hypercapnia in the mechanically ventilated rabbit.

Vascul Pharmacol

February 2003

Research Laboratory, Chair of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy, K. Marcinkowski Medical University, ul. św. Marii Magdaleny 14, 61-861 Poznań, Poland.

Background And Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of acute hypercapnia due to the mechanical hypoventilation on the oxidative metabolism of peripheral blood neutrophils in the rabbit.

Methods: The study was performed on 24 Chinchilla rabbits, randomized into normo- and hypercapnia groups (P(a)CO(2) between 9 and 11 kPa over 180 min). At the baseline point and after 180 min of mechanical ventilation, a neutrophil count, luminol-dependent chemiluminescence of the neutrophils stimulated with opsonized zymosan (OZ) or PMA (phorbol myristate acetate), and the hydrogen peroxide production of the cells upon the PMA stimulation were measured.

Kinetics of drug release from both compared preparations occuring as a cream and ointment, was in vitro studied. A reversed-phase HPLC method was developed for the determination of betamethasone dipropionate in lipophylic bases. Analyses were performed using a PLRP column with a mobile phase of methanol-acetonitrile-water and ultraviolet detection at lambda = 254 nm.

The influence of lidocaine on the permeability of the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier in experimental acute hypercapnia in the rabbit.

Acta Neurobiol Exp (Wars)

September 2001

Experimental Anaesthesia Department, Institute of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Therapy, K. Marcinkowski Medical University, 14 św. Marii Magdaleny St., 61-861 Poznań, Poland.

In a previous study we have provided evidence, that acute experimental hypercapnia due to hypoventilation in the rabbit alters blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier function in the brain (Pakulski et al. 1998). The purpose of this study therefore was to determine if lidocaine would prevent the observed alterations in the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier function.
