The primary objectives of this study were to describe the characteristics and survival outcomes for children supported with the HeartWare HVAD® system from the global community. This was a retrospective survey of patients <18 years of age with an HVAD® system. Questionnaires were sent to sites worldwide in April 2015 and collected between May 2015 and 2016.

Rapid emergence of colistin resistance and its impact on fatality among healthcare-associated infections.

This article describes the emergence of resistance and predictors of fatality for 1556 cases of healthcare-associated Gram-negative bloodstream infection in 2014 and 2015. The colistin resistance rate in Klebsiella pneumoniae was 16.1%, compared with 6% in 2013.

Comparison of seldinger and trocar techniques in the percutaneous treatment of hydatid cysts.

Aim: To comparatively evaluate Seldinger and Trocar techniques in the percutaneous treatment of hydatid disease.

Methods: Trocar and Seldinger techniques were used for 49 and 56 cysts, respectively, among 106 hydatid cysts in 88 patients. The number of males and females were 22 and 66, respectively with a mean age of 44.

How to image individual pulmonary veins with transthoracic echocardiography.

Although Doppler analysis of pulmonary veins (PVs) is crucial in the assessment of cardiac hemodynamics, there is controversy regarding individual anatomical PV imaging with transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). This report is a discussion of how to image PVs accurately using TTE. To resolve any contradiction, multiple TTE images were obtained during the selective catheterization of the PV in patients undergoing atrial fibrillation ablation procedure.

Third Generation Ventricular Assist Device: Mid-Term Outcomes of the HeartWare HVAD in Pediatric Patients.

The HeartWare HVAD is a small, third generation continuous flow pump that is intracorporeally placed for support of a failing ventricle in adult patients. This device is small in size when compared to other left ventricular assist devices and can therefore be used in smaller sized pediatric patients. We present our initial experience using the HVAD as a bridge to heart transplantation in the pediatric population.

Late Complication after Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair: What Is the Role of an Open Surgical Conversion?

Background: The aim was to evaluate the causes of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) failure and conversion to open surgery (COS) in a vascular center with high-volume open surgery and low-volume TEVAR procedures.

Methods: A total of 8 patients (6 men; mean age, 55.14 years) underwent COS after TEVAR.

Lateral Internal Partial Sphincterotomy Technique for Chronic Anal Fissure.

Lateral internal sphincterotomy is used for the treatment of a chronic anal fissure. There is a lack of consensus for the amount of internal sphincter division necessary in the surgical treatment of an anal fissure. The anatomy of the anal sphincters and the subcutaneous partial sphincterotomy technique are presented with fresh anal canal specimen photographs.

Intraoperative left atrium inversion after implantation of HeartMate III ventricular assist device.

We report here a case of left atrium inversion after implanting HeartMate III LVAD, which is known to be the first in literature. LVAD can be functional only if there is adequate inflow to the device. Parameters and filling of left ventricle can be assessed by TEE.

Mitral Patient-Prosthesis Mismatch Predicts Suboptimal Hemodynamic Recovery after Mitral Valve Replacement.

Background: A possible relationship between an obstructive prosthesis and suboptimal hemodynamic recovery, as reflected by unsatisfactory regression in systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) and functional tricuspid regurgitation (FTR) following mitral valve replacement (MVR), was investigated. A delineating effective orifice area index (EOAI) value was sought in order to define a patient-prosthesis mismatch.

Methods: A total of 128 patients undergoing isolated mechanical MVR were followed up for a mean of 46 ± 9 months.

Fast-track anesthesia in patients undergoing outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomy: comparison of sevoflurane with total intravenous anesthesia.

Background: The use of short-acting anesthetics has introduced a "fast-track anesthesia" concept in outpatient surgery which provides discharge of the patients from operation room directly to the phase II recovery area without entering into postanesthesia care unit. The aim of this prospective and randomized study was to compare general anesthesia using sevoflurane with propofol-remifentanil-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) for fast-track eligibility in patients undergoing outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The secondary aim was to compare 2 discharge scoring systems: White's Fast-Tracking Scoring System (WFTSS) and Modified Aldrete Scoring Systems (MASS) with regard to postanesthesia care unit bypass rate and postoperative problems.

Extralevator abdominoperineal excision versus conventional surgery for low rectal cancer: a single surgeon experience.

Objective: Extralevator abdominoperineal excision (ELAPE) reduces the risk of positive circumferential resection margin (CRM) and of intraoperative perforation (IOP), both of which are associated with high local recurrence rates and poor survival outcomes for rectal cancer. The aim of this study was to compare the results of ELAPE with conventional abdominoperineal excision (APE) for low rectal cancer.

Material And Methods: A total of 25 consecutive patients underwent ELAPE for low rectal cancer between November 2008 and September 2011.

Background: Recently fragmented QRS (fQRS) on electrocardiography (ECG) has been introduced as a predictor of myocardial scarring and myocardial ischemia in coronary artery disease (CAD).

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between fQRS and fractional flow reserve (FFR) results in patients with the intermediate degree of coronary artery stenosis.

Aneurysm rupture from blunt abdominal trauma after endovascular repair.

We present a case of aneurysm rupture from severe blunt abdominal trauma due to fight in a patient who had endovascular aneurysm repair. The patient presented to the emergency service with computed tomography evidence of an endoleak and a large retroperitoneal hematoma. The contrast abdominal computed tomography demonstrated a type Ib endoleak, increase in the aneurysm diameter and hematoma in the retroperitoneum.

A Novel Technique of Subclavian Artery Cannulation for Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.

Objectives: The common femoral artery is the standard site for immediate vascular access when initiating adult venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. However, this approach is fraught with problems such as femoral artery occlusion, distal limb ischemia, reperfusion injury resulting in compartment syndrome, retroperitoneal hemorrhage, thrombosis, embolization, and most importantly, pulmonary edema. Here, we show our preference of using the subclavian artery with a side graft as a different cannulation technique for outflow of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, which can avoid complications associated with different access techniques.

3D echocardiographic imaging of a septal myocardial cleft in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Myocardial clefts are defined as narrow, deep blood-filled invaginations within the left ventricular myocardium. They occur in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy patients with different frequency and represent a distinctive morphological expression of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Although two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography is able to detect myocardial clefts in some cases, cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging with its high spatial resolution can detect myocardial clefts not visualized with echocardiography.

Post-discharge heart failure monitoring program in Turkey: Hit-PoinT.

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and feasibility of an enhanced heart failure (HF) education with a 6-month telephone follow- up program in post-discharge ambulatory HF patients.

Methods: The Hit-Point trial was a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial of enhanced HF education with a 6-month telephone follow-up program (EHFP) vs routine care (RC) in patients with HF and reduced ejection fraction. A total of 248 patients from 10 centers in various geographical areas were randomized: 125 to EHFP and 123 to RC.

Re-emergence of genotype G9 during a five-and-a-half-year period in Turkish children with rotavirus diarrhea.

This study was done to understand the dynamics of rotavirus genotype distribution in Turkish children. Samples were collected from January 2006 through August 2011 from children at a hospital in Ankara. Rotavirus was detected in 28 % (241/889) of the samples.
