Self-enucleation is a rare but severe self-inflicted eye injury linked to psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder as well as substance abuse. Treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach involving urgent medical and surgical care, followed by long-term psychiatric treatment. In this case report, a 32-year-old woman presented to an ophthalmic emergency department after self-enucleation and was later admitted to a psychiatric ward.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFDiabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common complication in patients with diabetes, and screening for sight-threatening end-stages is indicated to avoid severe visual loss. Screening of DR is nationally implemented in Denmark according to evidence-based national guidelines, which includes the use of individualised screening intervals. Treatment is indicated for proliferative DR and diabetic macular oedema, and treatment modalities include retinal laser therapy, intravitreal angiostatic therapy, and vitrectomy.

Pre-eclampsia affects 3-4% of pregnancies and is associated with maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. High-risk pregnancies in Denmark are recommended prophylactic low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (LDA). If new screening algorithms are implemented, LDA will be recommended to around 10% of pregnant women.

Butterfly vertebra anomaly is a rare condition where the vertebral body fails to fuse during embryogenesis. In this case report, we present a 32-year-old male with progressive lower back pain and paralysis in both lower extremities. CT- and MR-scan showed an isolated L3 butterfly vertebra with a fusion of L2 and L3 discus through the defect and a discus prolapse compressing the spinal canal.

Inherited retinal disorders (IRD) are a common cause of severe visual impairment among children and young adults in Denmark. Gene therapy with voretigene neparvovec for a specific, and in Denmark common, cause of IRD (RPE65-related retinal dystrophy) was implemented as standard clinical practice in 2020 as the first of its kind. Twelve Danish patients have been treated with very positive outcomes.

This is a case report of a 52-year-old male with sudden onset of vertigo and orthostatic headache. Initial workup was negative, but over the following six months symptoms progressed and bilateral hygromas were identified.

Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) caused by the spirochete bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex is the most common bacterial neuroinfection in Denmark (180 cases per year). One of the main challenges to LNB is the diagnosis due to its variant manifestations often involving the skin, musculosceletal or nervous system affecting patient morbidity. Recent data shows a diagnostic delay of 21 days in laboratory-confirmed patients in Denmark.

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is characterised by intractable headache, papilloedema, visual symptoms, pulsatile tinnitus and elevated intracranial pressure (ICP). The incidence has increased, most likely due to the simultaneous increase in obesity. This review finds that imaging is centered on ruling out structural causes of elevated ICP as well as visualising classical signs of IIH.
