  • The study aimed to investigate how body composition changes after tonsillectomy and the effects of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) on these changes.
  • It involved 48 patients who were split into control and experimental groups, with the experimental group taking BCAAs daily, and body composition measured before and after surgery.
  • Results showed that while both groups lost weight, the BCAA group maintained or even increased muscle mass and improved body fat percentage, suggesting BCAA could help offset negative body composition effects of tonsillectomy.

Unpredictable deviations from an otherwise regular auditory sequence, as well as rare sounds following a period of silence, are detected automatically. Recent evidence suggests that the latter also elicit quick involuntary modulations of ongoing motor activity emerging as early as 100 ms following sound onset, which was attributed to supramodal processing. We explored such force modulations for both rare and deviant sounds.

Maternal psychopathology is differentially associated with adolescent offspring neural response to reward given offspring ADHD risk.

J Psychiatr Res

October 2024

Clinical and Developmental Neuropsychology Research Group, Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychology, Research Centre for Natural Sciences, Budapest, Hungary. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores how parental psychopathology influences the brain's response to rewards in adolescents, focusing on those at risk for ADHD compared to those not at risk.
  • In adolescents at risk for ADHD, parental psychopathology is mostly tied to a reduced neural response to rewards, while in those not at risk, it often leads to an increased response.
  • The findings suggest that while maternal psychopathology significantly impacts reward responsiveness, paternal psychopathology does not show a similar influence in either group of adolescents.

Article Synopsis
  • Most voluntary actions have a few goals, allowing individuals to choose how to execute them with considerable freedom.
  • Research shows that elements unrelated to the main task, like sound intensity, can affect how force is applied during actions, reflecting their significance in how actions are mentally represented.
  • In this study, participants exerted more force when there were no sounds or softer tones, suggesting that their motor planning adjusts based on the expected sensory feedback from actions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the effectiveness and safety of a modified version of family/systemic constellation therapy during the pandemic, involving 80 participants who were followed up at 1 and 6 months post-intervention.
  • Participants showed some significant improvements in overall psychopathology and various mental health indicators immediately after the therapy, but these benefits were mostly gone by the 6-month follow-up.
  • The findings suggest that due to changes made for pandemic circumstances, the results may not apply to traditional systemic constellation therapy, highlighting the challenges posed by adapting such interventions for online or modified formats.

Health Services Management Training Centre, Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary; Hungarian Healthcare Management Association, Budapest, Hungary.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study analyzing purchases from 2,000 households between 2010-2018 found that while the tax initially led to decreased consumption, there was a rebound over time, correlating with increased disposable income.
  • * The tax also worsened inequality, as lower-income households spent a larger share of their budget on taxed products, indicating that while effective short-term, these taxes alone may not sustain long-term dietary change without additional interventions.

The present study aimed to investigate whether the strength of mental health competencies and the severity of mental disorder symptoms, and their interaction, differ in the strength of their associations with several dimensions of well-being in Hungarian adult psychiatric and non-clinical samples. All respondent in the psychiatric sample (129 patients (44 male, 85 female)) and in the non-clinical community sample (253 adults (43 male, 210 female)) completed the Mental Health Test, six measures of well-being and mental health, and the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised. Including both mental health competencies and mental disorder symptoms in a regression model in both samples can predict patients' well-being even more accurately.

Previous studies have shown that the human capacity to gauge one's own physiological state is notoriously flawed. The cause for the mismatch between perceived and physiological stress has not yet been properly identified. In this study, we assumed that cardioceptive accuracy (CAc) is positively associated with cardiovascular reactivity, and CAc and expectation about stress might account for the discrepancy between perceived and physiological stress.

When someone violates a social norm, others may think that some sanction would be appropriate. We examine how the experience of emotions like anger and disgust relate to the judged appropriateness of sanctions, in a pre-registered analysis of data from a large-scale study in 56 societies. Across the world, we find that individuals who experience anger and disgust over a norm violation are more likely to endorse confrontation, ostracism and, to a smaller extent, gossip.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored how symptoms associated with environmental factors (SAEF), like chemical substances and sounds, develop and relate to individual attributions (beliefs or expectations about the cause of symptoms).
  • Using data from a large health study, they found significant links between symptom distress and the attribution of various SAEFs, highlighting different patterns of relationships.
  • The results suggest that the way people attribute their symptoms significantly influences their experience of these environmental intolerances, particularly for sound and chemicals, but not for buildings.
