[Traumatic subluxation of the cervical spine in an 1-year-old alpaca mare].

Tierarztl Prax Ausg G Grosstiere Nutztiere

December 2024

Tierklinik für Reproduktionsmedizin und Neugeborenenkunde, Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen.

A 1-year-old alpaca mare was presented due to lateral deviation of the cervical spine which had been present for a period of 2 weeks. Based on the previous report, a traumatic event was assumed. Feed and water intake were unremarkable, the gait was altered due to slight ataxic movements in all 4 limbs.

Objective: The spread of African swine fever in Germany has brought wild boar trapping back into focus as a method for animal disease control. While data on free-bullet slaughter in domestic mammals is available, data on the gun shot and caliber selection for use in wild boar trapping is largely lacking.

Material And Methods: The heads of 138 wild boars captured in 10 corral-style traps and shot with a bullet (caliber .

The coordination of cell cycle progression and flagellar synthesis is a complex process in motile bacteria. In γ-proteobacteria, the localization of the flagellum to the cell pole is mediated by the SRP-type GTPase FlhF. However, the mechanism of action of FlhF, and its relationship with the cell pole landmark protein HubP remain unclear.

Childhood is an obvious period for motor learning, since children's musculoskeletal and nervous systems are still in development. Adults adapt movements based on reward feedback about success and failure, but it is less established whether school-age children also exhibit such reward-based motor learning. We designed a new 'circle-drawing' task suitable for assessing reward-based motor learning in both children (7-17 years old) and adults (18-65 years old).

An attractive influence of past sensory experience on current behavior has been observed in many domains ranging from perceptual decisions to motor responses. However, it is unclear what sort of information is integrated across trials, especially for oculomotor behavior. Here we provide a detailed investigation of the spatial and directional tuning of serial dependence for oculomotor tracking.

Frontal alpha asymmetry as a marker of approach motivation? Insights from a cooperative forking path analysis.

J Pers Soc Psychol

November 2024

Department of Differential Psychology and Psychological Assessment, Faculty of Psychology and Human Movement Science, University of Hamburg.

Article Synopsis
  • Frontal alpha asymmetry was thought to indicate levels of approach motivation, but recent studies found little connection between it and personality traits.
  • A study using data from the CoScience project (n=740) measured frontal asymmetry during different tasks to see if it varied based on approach motivation.
  • The results showed that frontal asymmetry wasn't significantly influenced by the tasks and did not correlate with self-reported personality traits, undermining its validity as a marker for approach motivation.

How the pandemic affected psychological research.

R Soc Open Sci

November 2024

Department of Psychology, RPTU Kaiserslautern-Landau, Landau, Germany.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many journals swiftly changed their editorial policies and peer-review processes to accelerate the provision of knowledge about COVID-related issues to a wide audience. These changes may have favoured speed at the cost of accuracy and methodological rigour. In this study, we compare 100 COVID-related articles published in four major psychological journals between 2020 and 2022 with 100 non-COVID articles from the same journal issues and 100 pre-COVID articles published between 2017 and 2019.

We report the synthesis, isolation, and characterization of a stable donor-acceptor substituted -quinodimethane (QDM). This system with an imidazolidine scaffold as the donor can also be referred to as acceptor-substituted --heterocyclic quinodimethane (NHQ). We have examined the extent of polarization of the conjugated π-system using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, NMR and UV/vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT computations.

High-temperature Tl decay clarifies Pb dating in early Solar System.

Nature

November 2024

GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH, Darmstadt, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Radioactive nuclei that live for millions of years help us understand the Sun's formation and the nucleosynthesis happening when it was born, with lead (Pb) being a key example.
  • Recent measurements of the weak decay of ionized thallium (Tl) provided a more accurate half-life, which was found to be 4.7 times longer than previously thought, thus reducing uncertainty in our calculations.
  • Using these improved decay rates, researchers calculated lead yields in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, confirmed isolation times for solar material, and validated the theory that the Sun formed in a long-lived molecular cloud.

  • * Researchers collected blood or spleen samples from 220 badgers in nine countries between 2017 and 2021 and used PCR analysis and sequencing to identify various VBPs present in the animals.
  • * Key findings revealed the presence of several pathogens, including different types of Babesia, Trypanosoma pestanai, and Mycoplasma, while Rickettsia, Bartonella, and filarioid nematodes were not detected.

Serial dependence effects have been observed across a wide range of perceptual and oculomotor tasks. This opens up the question of whether these effects observed share underlying mechanisms. Here we measured serial dependence effects in a semipredictable environment for the same group of observers across four different tasks, two perceptual (color and orientation judgments) and two oculomotor (tracking moving targets and the pupil light reflex).

A search for the exclusive hadronic decays W^{±}→π^{±}γ, W^{±}→K^{±}γ, and W^{±}→ρ^{±}γ is performed using up to 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=13  TeV. If observed, these rare processes would provide a unique test bench for the quantum chromodynamics factorization formalism used to calculate cross sections at colliders. Additionally, at future colliders, these decays could offer a new way to measure the W boson mass through fully reconstructed decay products.

Article Synopsis
  • - The ATLAS experiment at the LHC conducted a search for long-lived particles (LLPs) using a large dataset (140 fb^{-1}) from proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV, focusing on LLPs with masses from 5 to 55 GeV that decay within the inner detector.
  • - The study considered scenarios where LLPs are produced from exotic Higgs boson decays and models involving axionlike particles (ALPs).
  • - No significant findings above expected background levels were detected, leading to the establishment of upper limits on various production rates involving the Higgs boson and the top quark related to LLPs and ALPs.

Although numerous individual factors influencing dream content have been explored, research on the link between sexual orientation and dreaming remains limited. This study examined this relationship among 119 German-speaking men (mean age = 31.97 years), including 55 homosexual and 64 heterosexual participants.

Uptake hydrogenase (Hup) recycles H2 formed by nitrogenase during nitrogen fixation, thereby preserving energy. Among root nodule bacteria, most rhizobial strains examined are Hup-, while only one Hup-  Frankia inoculum had been identified. Previous analyses had led to the identification of two different [NiFe] hydrogenase syntons.
