RNA interference (RNAi) is a crucial mechanism in immunity against infectious microbes through the action of DICER-LIKE (DCL) and ARGONAUTE (AGO) proteins. In the case of the taxonomically diverse fungal pathogen and the oomycete , plant DCL and AGO proteins have proven roles as negative regulators of immunity, suggesting functional specialization of these proteins. To address this aspect in a broader taxonomic context, we characterized the colonization pattern of an informative set of and loss-of-function mutants in upon infection with a panel of pathogenic microbes with different lifestyles, and a fungal mutualist.

Characterizing and quantifying appearance is important not only for basic research on perceptual mechanisms but also for computer graphics and a wide range of industrial applications. Studies have demonstrated additional environmental benefits of using perennial biomass crops (PBCs), when produced appropriately, as a feedstock for the growing bioeconomy, including utilisation for bioenergy (with or without carbon capture and storage). PBCs can potentially contribute to Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) (2023-27) objectives provided they are carefully integrated into farming systems and landscapes.

New biomass crop hybrids for bioeconomic expansion require yield projections to determine their potential for strategic land use planning in the face of global challenges. Our biomass growth simulation incorporates radiation interception and conversion efficiency. Models often use leaf area to predict interception which is demanding to determine accurately, so instead we use low-cost rapid light interception measurements using a simple laboratory-made line ceptometer and relate the dynamics of canopy closure to thermal time, and to measurements of biomass.

A variety of stress signals leads to activation of the inducible transcription factor NF-κB, one of the master regulators of the innate immune response. Despite a wealth of information available on the NF-κB core components and its control by different activation pathways and negative feedback loops, several levels of complexity hamper our understanding of the system. This has also contributed to the limited success of NF-κB inhibitors in the clinic and explains some of their unexpected effects.

While DNA barcodes are increasingly provided in descriptions of new species, the whole mitochondrial and nuclear genomes are still rarely included. This is unfortunate because whole genome sequencing of holotypes allows perpetual genetic characterization of the most representative specimen for a given species. Thus, genomes are invaluable additional diagnostic characters in species descriptions, provided the structural integrity of the holotype specimens remains intact.

Expansion of extracellular matrix occurs in all stages of pulmonary angiopathy associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). In systemic arteries, dysregulation and accumulation of the large chondroitin-sulfate proteoglycan aggrecan is associated with swelling and disruption of vessel wall homeostasis. Constant evolution of influenza A viruses (IAVs) leads to the occurrence of new virus strains, which can cause epidemics and occasional pandemics. Here we compared two medically relevant IAVs, namely A/Hamburg/4/09 (H1N1) of the 2009 pandemic and the highly pathogenic avian IAV human isolate A/Thailand/1(KAN-1)/2004 (H5N1), for their ability to trigger intracellular phosphorylation patterns using a highly sensitive peptide-based kinase activity profiling approach. Virus-dependent tyrosine phosphorylations of substrate peptides largely overlap between the two viruses and are also strongly overrepresented in comparison to serine/threonine peptide phosphorylations.

Recently, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a tolerable daily intake (TDI) for erucic acid, which is mainly found in rapeseed oil. Infants may be exposed to erucic acid from rapeseed oil indirectly through maternal consumption via breastmilk or the fat component in formula, and directly as a part of complementary feeding (CF). Grateloup, 1827 is a European Paleogene land snail genus, which is currently classified in its own family, the Ferussinidae Wenz, 1923 (1915), in the superfamily Cyclophoroidea. The shell of this genus is remarkable by its last quarter whorl turning towards the apex instead of away from it, which is an unusual trait in terrestrial snails. We show, however, that this trait has evolved at least nine times in terrestrial Eupulmonata and Caenogastropoda, and it does not justify distinction at the family level in any of the reported cases.

Objective: The German version of the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (SPAI-G) is a validated measure for the detection of social anxiety disorder (SAD). The aim of the present study was to develop optimal cut points (OC) for remission and response to treatment for the SPAI-G.
Methods: We used Receiver Operating Characteristic methods and bootstrapping to analyse the data of 359 patients after psychotherapeutic treatment.
Herein, we use genetic data from 277 sleeper sharks to perform coalescent-based modeling to test the hypothesis of early Quaternary emergence of the Greenland shark () from ancestral sleeper sharks in the Canadian Arctic-Subarctic region. Our results show that morphologically cryptic somniosids and can be genetically distinguished using combined mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers. Our data confirm the presence of genetically admixed individuals in the Canadian Arctic and sub-Arctic, and temperate Eastern Atlantic regions, suggesting introgressive hybridization upon secondary contact following the initial species divergence.
