From the Laboratory to the Real-World: The Role of Mismatch Negativity in Psychosis.

Mismatch negativity (MMN) has gained attention as a biomarker for psychosis and a translational intermediate phenotype in animal models of psychosis, including rodents and non-human primates. MMN has been linked to global functioning (Global Assessment of Functioning [GAF] score) and prognosis (psychosis onset or remission), suggesting that MMN reflects activities beyond auditory processing alone. This review examines the 45-year history of MMN from the perspective of psychiatric researchers and discusses current advances in computational and translational research on MMN, summarizing the current understanding of the MMN generation mechanism.

Identification of lateral pelvic nodes without metastasis in patients with rectal cancer treated with preoperative chemoradiotherapy or chemotherapy based on magnetic resonance imaging.

Background: Intensive localized therapy is promising for the treatment of rectal cancer. In Japan, chemoradiotherapy (CRT) and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) are used as preoperative treatments for this disease. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to diagnose lateral pelvic node (LPN) metastases, but the changes in LPN findings on MRI following preoperative treatment are unclear.

Activities of psychiatrists in specialized coronavirus disease 2019 wards at Juntendo Hospital.

Since the onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020, specialized COVID-19 wards have been established in general hospitals across Japan. Juntendo Hospital also established a dedicated COVID-19 ward; however, many hospitalized patients were found to have psychiatric symptoms, such as delirium and depression. Juntendo Hospital's COVID-19 specialist beds were staffed mainly by internists, who specialized in physical illnesses and were unfamiliar with psychiatric symptoms, making it difficult for them to provide adequate treatment.

Assessing the Efficacy of Tragal Pumping in a Novel Tympanostomy Tube-Rat Model.

Objective: Tragal pumping (TP) is a practice of pushing on the tragus to raise pressure within the external auditory canal and is a commonly recommended adjunctive maneuver believed to facilitate the introduction of ototopical medications into the middle ear cavity via a tympanostomy tube. To investigate the efficacy of TP in the penetration of eardrops into the middle ear cavity via tympanostomy tube, we established the novel tympanostomy tube-rat model. We investigated the histology of the middle ear to determine the efficacy in moving fluid into the middle ear.

Background: Despite the positive impact of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) and wearable cardioverter defibrillators (WCDs) on prognosis, their implantation is often withheld especially in Japanese heart failure patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (HFrEF) who have not experienced ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF) for uncertain reasons. Recent advancements in heart failure (HF) medications have significantly improved the prognosis for HFrEF. Given this context, a critical reassessment of the treatment and prognosis of ICDs and WCDs is essential, as it has the potential to reshape awareness and treatment strategies for these patients.

Technical review of endoscopic ultrasound-guided drainage/anastomosis and trans-endosonographically created route procedures for the treatment of pancreatic diseases.

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided pancreatic duct drainage includes two procedures: EUS-guided drainage/anastomosis (EUS-D/A) and trans-papillary drainage with EUS-assisted pancreatic rendezvous. EUS-guided pancreatogastrostomy is the most common EUS-D/A procedure and is recommended as a salvage procedure in cases in which endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography fails or is difficult. However, initial EUS-D/A is performed in patients with surgically altered anatomy at our institution.

Risk factors for nonresponse to 2 years of denosumab administration in patients with osteoporosis: A retrospective single-center cohorts study.

Background And Aims: To investigate the factors associated with changes in bone mineral density (BMD) and the incidence of fractures in osteoporotic patients treated with denosumab.

Methods: This retrospective study included 162 osteoporotic patients treated with denosumab for 24 months between 2013 and 2019. Patients were divided according to the changes in BMD as nonresponders (N group: <3% increase in lumbar spine BMD [LBMD], N group: <0% increase in femoral neck BMD [FNBMD]) or responders (R group: ≥3% increase in LBMD, R group: ≥0% increase in FNBMD).

Methods: Participants comprised 59 patients who had undergone primary ACL reconstruction using hamstring tendon. The ACL-RSI was completed 6 months after reconstruction and five physical functions were measured in patients on the same day.

Background: International consensus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency cardiovascular care science and treatment recommendations (CoSTR) have reported updates on CPR maneuvers every 5 years since 2000. However, few national population-based studies have investigated the comprehensive effectiveness of those updates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest due to shockable rhythms. The primary objective of the present study was to determine whether CPR based on CoSTR 2005 or 2010 was associated with improved outcomes in Japan, as compared with CPR based on Guidelines 2000.

Local recurrence of submucosal invasive colorectal cancer after endoscopic submucosal dissection revealed by copy number variation.

We report a case in which analysis of copy number variation revealed local recurrence of submucosal invasive colorectal cancer after curative endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). An 86-year-old man with a history of abdominoperineal resection of the rectum for rectal cancer underwent resection with ESD for early-stage sigmoid cancer 5 cm away from the stoma opening. At the same time, ileocecal resection was performed for advanced cecal cancer.
