Atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) are stress-related fractures that are speculated to associate with long-term treatment with bisphosphonates for osteoporosis. A history of AFF is a high risk factor for the development of a subsequent AFF in the same location of the contralateral femur, suggesting that a patient's individual anatomical factor(s) are related to the fracture site of AFFs. In this study, we investigated the radiographs of fourteen AFFs (four bilateral fractures among ten patients) treated at six hospitals associated with our university between 2005 and 2010.

Gastric cancer is the second leading cause of cancer mortality in the world. It is important to develop biomarkers for detecting new cancers at an early stage and for treating them early during recurrence in order to guide optimal treatment. Fatty acid synthase (FAS) is highly expressed in numerous human cancers and thus could potentially serve as such a biomarker, but the potential utility of measuring FAS for detecting gastric cancer has not been previously investigated.

ERC/mesothelin is expressed in mesothelioma and other malignancies. The ERC/mesothelin gene (MSLN) encodes a 71-kDa precursor protein, which is cleaved to yield 31-kDa N-terminal (N-ERC/mesothelin) and 40-kDa C-terminal (C-ERC/mesothelin) proteins. N-ERC/mesothelin is a soluble protein and has been reported to be a diagnostic serum marker of mesothelioma and ovarian cancer.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the background characteriscs of ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and to clarify the true impact of tumor rupture on patient prognosis in a large patient cohort.

Background: Spontaneous tumor rupture of HCC has been associated with a very poor patient prognosis and the current TNM staging systems classify ruptured HCC as T4 based on insufficient evidence.

Methods: In total, 1106 patients with ruptured HCC were extracted from the database of a nationwide survey conducted in Japan from 2000 to 2005.

In total hip arthroplasty of the acetabular roof fixed by press-fit without screw fixation, there is little possibility for loosening to occur, because it is difficult for wear debris to enter between the cup and the acetabular roof, as screw holes are not present. However, stability is provided only by contact. In the case of acetabular dysplasia, it is not well understood whether sufficient initial fixation power is provided.

Since direct hemoperfusion with polymyxin B immobilized fiber (PMX-DHP) received its product certification for use in Europe in 1998, several prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been conducted in European countries. The first RCT, performed in six European academic medical centers in 2005, concluded that PMX-DHP is associated with improved hemodynamic status and cardiac function. Subsequently, a meta-analysis of PMX-DHP was presented in Italy in 2007.

Background: Inhibition of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) can suppress left ventricular (LV) remodeling after acute myocardial infarction (AMI), possibly through the modifications of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9. Whether LV remodeling is suppressed in association with MMP-9 suppression in post-AMI/-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) patients treated with ACE inhibitor and/or ARB was examined. The presence of any differences in LV remodeling and MMP-9 levels across the groups was also investigated.

Colorectal epithelial neoplasia (CR-EN), both adenoma and adenocarcinoma, may develop from the essential tubules of the colorectum. In order to conclude the carcinogenesis of the colorectal cancer more clearly, the biological features including the genetic abnormality of the nonneoplastic mucosal epithelium of colon and rectum, which coexist in connection with CR-EN, should be investigated. In this review, the importance of Paneth cell metaplasia of colorectum as one of the original mucosal regions of the development of CR-EN, and the new hypothesis on the development of CR-EN (nonspecific inflammation - colorectal Paneth cell metaplasia - colorectal epithelial neoplasia) are examined.

Background: Although the gastric well-differentiated adenocarcinoma in the distal stomach has been thought to develop via a intestinal metaplasia-carcinoma sequence, there are some disproofs from new mucin examinations for minute-size lesions in same type carcinoma. The current study was performed and pointed out the new findings for the solution to the problem according to the point described above.

Methods: 12 super-minute lesions (less than 1 mm in maximum diameter) of well-differentiated adenocarcinoma in distal stomach (SMCa), which were detected from the pathological examinations of 210 surgically resected stomach specimens, and the mucosa adjacent to these carcinoma lesions, were examined by immunohistochemical mucin stainings (MUC2 and CD-10: intestinal phenotype, 45M1 and MUC6: gastric phenotype) and p53-overexpression.
