The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of participation in 12-week multimodal cognitive exercise program on cognitive function, bone mineral density, blood lipids, senior functional fitness, and depression of the old women with mild cognitive impairment and osteopenia. As a result, the exercise group showed significant effects in cognitive function, depression, bone mineral density, blood lipid, lower extremity flexibility, upper extremity flexibility, dynamic balance, and body endurance. Such results prove that multimodal cognitive exercise program is an effective interventional exercise program for improving cognitive function in the old women with mild cognitive impairment.

Sleep Fragmentation Accelerates Carcinogenesis in a Chemical-Induced Colon Cancer Model.

Int J Mol Sci

February 2023

Sleep Medicine Institute, Jungwon University, Goesan-gun 20204, Chungcheongbuk-do, Republic of Korea.

Aims of this study were to test whether sleep fragmentation (SF) increased carcinogenesis and to investigate the possible mechanisms of carcinogenesis in a chemical-induced colon cancer model. In this study, eight-week-old C57BL/6 mice were divided into Home cage (HC) and SF groups. After the azoxymethane (AOM) injection, the mice in the SF group were subjected to SF for 77 days.

Enteroviruses (EVs) have been associated with several human diseases. Due to their continuous emergence and divergence, EV species have generated more than 100 types and recombinant strains, increasing the public health threat caused by them. Hence, an efficient and universal cloning system for reverse genetics (RG) of highly divergent viruses is needed to understand the molecular mechanisms of viral pathology and evolution.

The core-shell structure of poly(St--MAA) nanoparticles containing β-diketonate Eu complexes were synthesized by a step-wise process. The β-diketonate Eu complexes of Eu (TFTB)(MAA)P(Oct) [europium (III); 4,4,4-Trifluoro-1-(2-thienyl)-1,3-butanedione = TFTB; trioctylphosphine = (P(Oct)); methacrylic acid = MAA] were incorporated to poly(St--MAA). The poly(St--MAA) has highly monodispersed with a size of 300 nm, and surface charges of the poly(St-co-MAA) are near to neutral.

Anti‑inflammatory effects of Nypa fruticans Wurmb via NF‑κB and MAPK signaling pathways in macrophages.

Exp Ther Med

December 2022

Department of Pharmaceutical Science, Jungwon University, Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do 28024, Republic of Korea.

The inflammatory defense response of macrophages is a natural protective reaction in the immune system. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities are closely related. In addition, the cell signaling pathway regulating inflammation is associated with MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathway phosphorylation.

Renal fibrosis is the final manifestation of chronic kidney disease (CKD) regardless of etiology. Hypoxia-inducible factor-2 alpha (HIF-2α) is an important regulator of chronic hypoxia, and the late-stage renal tubular HIF-2α activation exerts protective effects against renal fibrosis. However, its specific role in progressive renal fibrosis remains unclear.

Both obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and inflammation have now been recognized as imposing substantial cardiometabolic risk. However, no prospective study has reported whether the coexistence of OSA and inflammation exacerbates the progressive arterial stiffening. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine whether these conditions increase the risk of the progression of arterial stiffening.

Background: ICU patients typically experience diverse kinds of distress factors, which make them vulnerable to delirium thereby resulting in a higher rate of delirium occurrence. We aimed to review systematically current states of preventive nursing intervention in ICUs, and to analyze delirium occurrence and the length of ICU stay to provide suggestions for the preventive nursing practice in ICU.

Methods: Data collection was done with literature search databases including PubMed, Ovid-MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, KMbase, KoreaMed, Korean Studies Information Service System (KISS), Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KiSTi), Research Information Service System (RISS) and with hand searching, from Apr 20 to May 10, 2020.

Beneficial role of Boehmeria nivea in health and phytochemical constituents.

J Food Biochem

December 2022

Department of Plant Science and Technology, Chung-Ang University, Anseong, Republic of Korea.

The leaf and stem extracts of Boehmeria nivea (BN) collected from three different regions in Korea were screened for their antioxidant, neuroprotective, estrogenic, insulin secretion, and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. We also examined whether BN extracts regulate cancer cell growth, inflammatory-related gene expression, and lipid accumulation in cellular system. Leaf extracts possessed greater antioxidant, anti-proliferative in cancer cells, neuroprotective, estrogenic activity, and inhibitory effect on pro-inflammatory gene expression than stem extracts.

Purpose: To elucidate the effect of medial meniscus posterior root (MMPR) repair during opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) in terms of contact pressure (CP) and contact area (CA).

Methods: Nine fresh-frozen human cadaveric knee specimens were included. Each specimen was tested under 9 conditions comprising 3 different degrees of correction during OWHTO (neutral, 5° of valgus, and 10° of valgus) and 3 different types of MMPR conditions (intact, torn, and repaired).
