A protective effect of childhood vaccinations on leukemia risk, particularly acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), has been hypothesized, though findings are inconsistent. We used a nationwide cohort of Danish children born 1997-2018 (n = 1,360,230), to examine associations between childhood vaccinations and leukemia (<20 years) using registry data (follow-up: December 31, 2018). Cox proportional hazard models with age as the underlying time estimated hazard ratios (HRs) for leukemia (any, ALL, acute myeloid [AML], and other), comparing vaccinated with unvaccinated children.

January 2025

The Child and Adolescent Clinic, Juliane Marie Center, The Danish National University Hospital "Rigshospitalet", Copenhagen, Capital Region of Denmark, Denmark; Institute for Clinical Medicine, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Background: Lowering the age for receiving the first dose of a measles-containing vaccine (MCV1) has been suggested to close the emerging immunity gap in infants. However, tolerability remains one of the main concerns for vaccine-hesitant parents. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of reactogenicity following MCV1 in infants under 12 months of age.

Article Synopsis
  • Assessing measles risk in infants 6-12 months is crucial, but there's limited data on ELISA tests for those under 9 months.
  • A study used a commercial ELISA kit to evaluate measles immunity in infants aged 5-7 months, comparing results with the more complex PRNT method at various time points after vaccination.
  • Findings showed low correlation between ELISA and PRNT results, with ELISA often underestimating immunity, indicating a need for more accurate testing to prevent vaccine failures during outbreaks.*

Treatment-related mortality among children with cancer in Denmark during 2001-2021.

Acta Oncol

May 2024

Department of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology, Department of Paediatric and Adolescence Medicine. Juliane Marie Center, Copenhagen University Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Background: Survival of children with cancer has markedly improved over recent decades, largely due to intensified treatment regimes. The intensive treatment may, however, result in fatal complications. In this retrospective cohort study, we assessed temporal variation in the incidence of treatment-related death and associated risk factors among children diagnosed with cancer in Denmark during 2001-2021.

Background: The European Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care recommends the use of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBA) in adults, to facilitate tracheal intubation and reduce its associated complications. Children who undergo tracheal intubation may suffer some of the same complications, however, no consensus exists regarding the use of NMBA for tracheal intubation in the pediatric population. We will explore the existing evidence assessing the effects of avoidance versus the use of NMBA for the facilitation of tracheal intubation in children and infants.

Pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and PAPP-A2 modulate insulin-like growth factor (IGF) action and are inhibited by the stanniocalcins (STC1 and STC2). We previously demonstrated increased PAPP-A and IGF activity in ascites from women with ovarian carcinomas. In this prospective, longitudinal study of 107 women with ovarian cancer and ascites accumulation, we determined corresponding serum and ascites levels of IGF-1, IGF-2, PAPP-A, PAPP-A2, STC1, and STC2 and assessed their relationship with mortality.
