Cardiovascular diseases can be an emerging complication in cystic fibrosis (CF), as the median life expectancy has improved considerably. The objective of this study was to compare vascular, hemodynamic parameters and arterial stiffness in adult CF patients with healthy participants pared by sex and age, and to assess the factors associated with arterial stiffness in the CF group. This is a cross-sectional observational study.

Background: Heteroresistance is the coexistence of susceptible and resistant strains in the same individual, considered the preliminary step for total resistance, and can stem from mixed infection or clonal heterogeneity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the heteroresistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to rifampicin and isoniazid and its characterization.
Method: GenoType MTBDRplus; Sanger sequencing of the rpoB, katG, and inhA genes; and Mycobacterial Interspersed Repetitive Unit - Variable Number Tandem Repeat (MIRU-VNTR) were performed.

Background: Drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) is an ongoing health threat, and the greatest challenge to adequate control of TB in many countries lies in the lack of proper laboratory drug-susceptibility test. The aim of this study was to evaluate the activity-based costs (ABC) of Kit SIRE Nitratase (Kit SIRE) and compare its values with the conventional drug-susceptibility test.
Methods: The ABC was calculated for three different approaches: Kit SIRE (clinical samples and cultures), proportion methods in Lowenstein Jensen (PM-LJ), and the Bactec™ MGIT™ 960 system based on Mycobacterial Research Laboratory's routine.

Purpose: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease reduces functional capacity, which is strongly correlated with the morbidity and mortality of patients. The BODE index considers the multifactorial nature of the disease, including the functional capacity measured by the 6-min walk test (6MWT), and this index predicts the mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Our aim was to assess whether association exists between the original BODE index and the modified BODE index by replacing the 6MWT with the scores from the Pulmonary Functional Status and Dyspnea Questionnaire-Modified version (PFSDQ-M), Human Activity Profile (HAP) questionnaire, and the results of the Glittre ADL Test (TGlittre).

Unlabelled: Remifentanil is a relatively new ultrashort action synthetic opioid. Studies on the use of remifentanil in neonatology have emerged demonstrating its effectiveness and safety in neonates. The present study describes the use of remifentanil in both full-term and premature newborns, highlighting the theoretical benefits for this population in terms of both neonatal intensive care and anaesthesia.

Pulmonary eosinophilia comprises a heterogeneous group of diseases defined by eosinophilia in pulmonary infiltrates (bronchoalveolar lavage fluid) or in tissue (lung biopsy specimens). Although the inflammatory infiltrate is composed of macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils and eosinophils, eosinophilia is an important marker for the diagnosis and treatment. Clinical and radiological presentations can include simple pulmonary eosinophilia, chronic eosinophilic pneumonia, acute eosinophilic pneumonia, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis and pulmonary eosinophilia associated with a systemic disease, such as in Churg-Strauss syndrome and hypereosinophilic syndrome.
