Introduction: Snakebite envenomation is a significant global health issue, with India bearing a substantial burden. Despite the development of guidelines, knowledge gaps and lack of training persist among healthcare workers (HCWs), contributing to high morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the Snake Bite Life Support (SBLS) workshop on HCWs' knowledge, practices, self-efficacy, and advocacy skills in snakebite management.

Dermal substitutes offer a valuable tool in soft-tissue reconstruction, reducing the need for donor site tissue and its associated complications. However, conventional approaches often require multiple surgeries. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a single-stage procedure combining dermal substitute and skin grafting with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy to the standard multistage protocol.

Identification of benzimidazole-6-carboxamide based inhibitors of secretory glutaminyl cyclase for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

The formation of the pyroglutamate variant of amyloid beta (pGlu-Aβ), which is extremely hydrophobic, rapidly aggregating, and highly neurotoxic, is mediated by the action of secretory glutaminyl cyclase (sQC). The pGlu-Aβ often acts as a seed for the aggregation of the full length Aβ and contributes to the overall load of Aβ plaques in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therefore, inhibiting sQC is a potential approach to limit the formation of pGlu-Aβ and to modify the progression of AD.

Article Synopsis
  • Home time, or the duration patients with cardiovascular disease spend alive outside of healthcare institutions, is an essential aspect of recovery, particularly for heart failure (HF) patients, yet insufficiently studied in India where HF rates are increasing.
  • Current literature falls short in identifying hospital-level trends and predictors of home time, which complicates the development of personalized care strategies to enhance health outcomes, functional status, and reduce hospitalization risks.
  • While guideline-directed medical therapy, especially sacubitril/valsartan (an angiotensin receptor neprilysin inhibitor), is well-supported for improving life quality and reducing HF-related hospitalizations, its use remains low, indicating a critical need for better integration into clinical practice to improve patient recovery and home time post

Electronic address:

Objective: To identify the COVID-19 pandemic impact on well-being/mental health, coping strategies, and risk factors in adolescents worldwide.

Method: This study was based on an anonymous online multi-national/multi-language survey in the general population (representative/weighted non-representative samples, 14-17 years of age), measuring change in well-being (World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index [WHO-5]/range = 0-100) and psychopathology (validated composite P-score/range = 0-100), WHO-5 <50 and <29, pre- vs during COVID-19 pandemic (April 26, 2020-June 26, 2022). Coping strategies and 9 a priori- defined individual/cumulative risk factors were measured.

Article Synopsis
  • This study aimed to investigate the role of IRF6 gene polymorphisms in individuals with Non-syndromic Orofacial Cleft (NSOFC) in Kerala.
  • The research involved analyzing DNA from 100 case-parent triads and specifically focused on the polymorphisms rs2235371 and rs7552506 using PCR and Sanger sequencing.
  • Results indicated a significant association between rs2235371 and NSOFC, particularly linked to paternal ancestry, while rs7552506 exhibited maternal linkage, suggesting IRF6 could be a risk factor for NSOFC in this population.

  • India faces a high snakebite mortality rate, making effective management essential, prompting a study on current practices among physicians.
  • A survey revealed gaps in physicians' confidence versus their actual ability to identify snakes, outdated treatment practices, and inconsistent institutional management protocols.
  • There is a pressing need for better training, standardized treatment guidelines, and tailored antivenoms, particularly for species like the hump-nosed pit viper, which current treatments do not adequately address.

Hypertension, a key modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), significantly contributes to premature death and morbidity worldwide. Despite stabilization in age-adjusted global prevalence, the absolute number of hypertensive individuals doubled from 2000 to 2010, largely due to increases in low- and middle-income countries. In 2021, only 21% of hypertensive individuals globally had effective blood pressure (BP) control.

Congenital leukaemia (CL) is an exceptionally uncommon hematologic malignancy originating intrauterine and is typically associated with an unfavourable prognosis. The present case is a seven-day-old Malay baby girl who presented with mild fever and hepatosplenomegaly. She was initially treated as neonatal sepsis however subsequent investigations with bone marrow, trephine biopsy and immunophenotyping were consistent with B acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Chromosomal rearrangement can disrupt gene function by interfering with coding sequences or their regulatory regions. The breakpoint in these rearrangements can pinpoint the disease-related gene's location. This paper presents two rare cases of chromosomal rearrangement involving chromosome 6 (6p24-25) and chromosome 14 (14q22-23).

  • The human gut is home to many types of bacteria, with some being very common and others rare, but we don't know much about what the rare ones do.
  • In a study, researchers created a group of four rare bacteria (called SC-4) and tested its effects on mice, finding that it helped protect them from gut problems and made their gut health better.
  • The study suggests that these rare bacteria could be used to help treat diseases like Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease by acting like a backup system for gut health.
