Root canal perforation is defined as an opening or communication of the root to the outer oral tissue that occurs either accidentally during root canal therapy or due to unknown pathological causes, which generally result in complications in patients due to the passage of microorganisms to the surrounding tissues. These complications may necessitate extraction of the affected tooth. In this literature review, 42 articles were reviewed initially; 33 of them were included in the final analysis based on exclusion and inclusion criteria.

Article Synopsis
  • The gallbladder forms from the hepatic diverticulum during fetal development, and congenital anomalies can occur, including a rare condition called true diverticulum, which is exceedingly uncommon.
  • A case study is presented involving a 38-year-old woman experiencing right upper-quadrant pain, who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy revealing congenital diverticulum with specific inflammation within the gallbladder wall.
  • Understanding these gallbladder anomalies is crucial for surgeons, as they can lead to complications like cholecystitis and cholangitis, and affect the surgical approach in cases of abnormal anatomy.

Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, School of Medical Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian 16150, Malaysia; Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kubang Kerian 16150, Malaysia. Electronic address:

Wild birds could be a reservoir of medically relevant microorganisms, particularly multidrug-resistant Enterococcus spp. Resistant bacteria's epidemiology and transmission between animals and humans has grown, and their zoonotic potential cannot be ignored. This is the first study to evaluate the status of vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) in various wild bird species using meta-analysis and a systematic review.

We describe a critical case of a respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in a preterm infant resulting in respiratory failure with advanced respiratory interventions and discharge from our hospital without the requirement for home oxygen therapy or tube feeding. The infant, delivered at 35 weeks gestation due to a premature rupture of the membranes with a birth weight of 2 kg, initially demonstrated a stable postnatal course. The baby required no resuscitation, with Apgar scores of 8 and 9 at one and five minutes, respectively.

Pancreatic pseudocysts are fluid-filled collections that can arise from acute or chronic pancreatitis and may lead to a range of complications, like rupture, infection, hemorrhage, etc. Morbid obesity may further complicate the diagnosis and management of such cases. The present report describes the case of a 26-year-old superobese female (BMI: 58 kg/m²) with a pancreatic pseudocyst that presented diagnostic challenges and mimicked pulmonary embolism when the pseudocyst had ruptured.

Fournier's gangrene, a not-so-common urological emergency, is a fast-progressing necrotizing bacterial infection that affects the perineum and external genitalia and can be rapidly fatal unless diagnosed and aggressively managed promptly. Fever, erythematous edema of the scrotum, and palpation of classic scrotal crepitation are among the clinical symptoms. The treatment involves rapid administration of empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics with gram-positive, gram-negative, and anaerobic coverage and rigorous surgical debridement down to the bleeding tissues.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a parasitic disease caused by a larval stage (metacestode) of (), which is still endemic in many countries worldwide, despite the efforts of the World Health Organization (WHO) to reduce the disease burden in those countries. The hydatid cysts of the liver tend to grow gradually over a long period of time and may cause a variety of symptoms, either related to compression of adjacent organs or rupture. Here we report an unusual case of a giant hydatid cyst of the liver presenting to the emergency room (ER) of our hospital with chest deformity and severe chest pain, heralding impending rupture.

Gut malrotation may result in failure of descent of the cecum to the right iliac fossa, resulting in the anomaly where the cecum and appendix are situated in the subhepatic/gallbladder region. Although the true incidence of subhepatic cecum or appendix is not known, there is a handful of case reports in the literature describing the diagnosis and management of subhepatic appendicitis and associated challenges. Some case reports describe subhepatic appendicitis, where the cecum is in a normal position, but the subhepatic tip of the long appendix gets perforated or inflamed, resulting in the process being in the subhepatic region.

Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital condition characterized by a mirror-image transposition of both the abdominal and the thoracic organs. Due to the reversal of organs, laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) poses a significant challenge in patients with SIT. After the first reported case of LC in a patient with SIT in 1991, 120 more such reports have been published in the literature, but very few of them were carried out on morbidly obese patients.

Acute appendicitis is one of the most common causes of acute abdomen in children and young adults, with differential diagnoses involving several surgical, medical as well as obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN)-related conditions. Cecal wall necrosis is not usually included in the differential diagnosis of acute appendicitis, mainly because of the rare nature of the condition and the relatively low level of awareness among surgeons. We present a case of isolated cecal wall necrosis presenting as acute appendicitis.

Acute appendicitis is considered one of the most common surgical emergencies with low morbidity and mortality. However, delay in the diagnosis may lead to perforation of the appendix. Hence, complications may arise, including necrotizing fasciitis, a rare complication of a perforated appendix.
