Background And Objectives: The role of the complement system in myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is not completely understood, and studies exploring its potential utility for diagnosis and prognosis are lacking. We aimed to investigate the value of complement factors (CFs) as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in patients with MOGAD.
Methods: Multicentric retrospective cohort study including patients with MOGAD, multiple sclerosis (MS) and aquaporin-4 seropositive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (AQP4-NMOSD) with available paired serum and CSF samples.

Food addiction contributes to the obesity pandemic, but the connection between how the gut microbiome is linked to food addiction remains largely unclear. Here we show that Microviridae bacteriophages, particularly Gokushovirus WZ-2015a, are associated with food addiction and obesity across multiple human cohorts. Further analyses reveal that food addiction and Gokushovirus are linked to serotonin and dopamine metabolism.

Obesity and cardiometabolic disease often, but not always, coincide. Distinguishing subpopulations within which cardiometabolic risk diverges from the risk expected for a given body mass index (BMI) may facilitate precision prevention of cardiometabolic diseases. Accordingly, we performed unsupervised clustering in four European population-based cohorts (N ≈ 173,000).

Background: Lung cancer (LC) is Europe's primary cause of cancer-related mortality largely due to its historically low survival rates. The aim of this study was to analyze 26-year survival trends in the province of Girona, Spain, and to identify key prognostic factors.
Methods: Population-based study of LC cases collected between 1994 and 2019, with follow-up until December 31, 2021.

Background: Mice experiments have underscored the efficacy of pharmacological inhibition of advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) through the use of soluble receptors for advanced glycation endproducts (sRAGE) in mitigating obesity-linked metabolic disruptions and insulin resistance. However, human studies have presented conflicting findings regarding the correlation between circulating sRAGE levels and insulin resistance, as well as glucose tolerance. Here, we aimed to delve deeper into the relationship between sRAGE levels and systemic insulin sensitivity.

Background: The microbiota is emerging as a key factor in the predisposition to insulin resistance and obesity.
Objective: To understand the interplay among gut microbiota and insulin sensitivity in multiple tissues.
Design: Integrative multiomics and multitissue approach across six studies, combining euglycaemic clamp measurements (used in four of the six studies) with other measurements of glucose metabolism and insulin resistance (glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and fasting glucose).

Pulmonary Embolism (PE) is a life-threatening condition initiated by the presence of blood clots in the pulmonary arteries, leading to severe morbidity and mortality. Underlying mechanisms involve endothelial dysfunction, including impaired blood flow regulation, a pro-thrombotic state, inflammation, heightened oxidative stress, and altered vascular remodeling. These mechanisms contribute to vascular diseases stemming from PE, such as recurrent thromboembolism, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, post-thrombotic syndrome, right heart failure, and cardiogenic shock.

The endothelium is a cell monolayer that lines vessels and separates tissues from blood flow. Endothelial cells (ECs) have a multitude of functions, including regulating blood flow and systemic perfusion through changes in vessel diameter. When an injury occurs, the endothelium is affected by altering its functions and structure, which leads to endothelial dysfunction, a characteristic of many vascular diseases.

Background: There are conflicting results among studies on the association between serum ferritin (SF) and metabolic syndrome (MetS), and by groups of sex/menopausal status. To date, there are no studies on British populations. The SF-MetS association might be U/J-shaped.

Background: Our aim was to determine the association between diet quality and depression incidence in the population-based REGICOR cohort study, Catalonia, Spain.
Methods: Prospective observational study using participants' baseline (2003-2006), follow-up (2007-2013) and clinical records data. Five diet quality scores were derived from a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) at baseline: the relative Mediterranean Diet Score (rMED), the Modified Mediterranean Diet Score (ModMDS), a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) score, a Healthful Plant-based Diet Index (HPDI) and the World Health Organization Healthy Diet Indicator (WHO-HDI).

8q21.11 microdeletions encompassing the gene encoding transcription factor ZFHX4, have previously been associated by us with a syndromic form of intellectual disability, hypotonia, decreased balance and hearing loss. Here, we report on 57 individuals, 52 probands and 5 affected family members, with protein truncating variants (n=36), (micro)deletions (n=20) or an inversion (n=1) affecting with variable developmental delay and intellectual disability, distinctive facial characteristics, morphological abnormalities of the central nervous system, behavioral alterations, short stature, hypotonia, and occasionally cleft palate and anterior segment dysgenesis.

Background: People with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (pwSPMS) experience increasing disability, which impacts negatively on their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Our aims were to assess the impact of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) on functional status and HRQoL and describe the clinical profile in this population.

Introduction: Although several studies report that the robotic approach is more costly than laparoscopy, the cost-effectiveness of robotic distal pancreatectomy (RDP) over laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (LDP) is still an issue. This study evaluates the cost-effectiveness of the RDP and LDP approaches across several Spanish centres.
Methods: This study is an observational, multicenter, national prospective study (ROBOCOSTES).

Background: Acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) related to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI-AIN) has a not completely understood pathophysiology. Our objectives were to analyze possible biomarkers for the differentiation between acute tubular necrosis (ATN) and AIN, especially in cancer patients, and to study the participation of the immune checkpoint pathway in ICI-AIN.
Methods: We performed an observational study.

Immunohistochemical studies have identified complement component C1q in MS lesions. We aimed to compare serum (sC1q) and CSF (csfC1q) levels in a large cohort of MS patients (pwMS) (n = 222) with those of healthy controls (HC, n = 52), individuals with other immune (IND, n = 14), and non-immune neurological disorders (nIND, n = 15), and to analyze their correlation with other biomarkers. pwMS were divided into three series based on their origin.

Purpose: Colistin is used as a last resort antibiotic against infections caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria, especially carbapenem-resistant bacteria. However, colistin-resistance in clinical isolates is becoming more prevalent. Cinnamaldehyde and baicalin, which are the major active constituents of Cinnamomum and Scutellaria, have been reported to exhibit antibacterial properties.

Background: Acute ischemic stroke is a leading cause of pediatric death and disability. A clinical scale adapted for children can ensure early detection of candidates for urgent acute ischemic stroke treatment. The Rapid Arterial Occlusion Evaluation (RACE) scale for adults, which scores 5 items (facial palsy 0-2; arm motor function 0-2; leg motor function 0-2; head/gaze deviation 0-1; and aphasia or agnosia 0-2), has good sensitivity and specificity in detecting large vessel occlusion.

Context: Medical treatment of acromegaly is currently performed through a trial-and-error approach using first-generation somatostatin receptor ligands (fgSRLs) as first-line drugs, with an effectiveness of about 50%, and subsequent drugs are indicated through clinical judgment. Some biomarkers can predict fgSRLs response.
Objective: Here we report the results of the ACROFAST study, a clinical trial in which a protocol based on predictive biomarkers of fgSRLs was evaluated.
