: Laurocapram (Azone) attracted attention 40 years ago as a compound with the highest skin-penetration-enhancing effect at that time; however, its development was shelved due to strong skin irritation. We had already prepared and tested an ante-enhancer (IL-Azone), an ionic liquid (IL) with a similar structure to Azone, consisting of ε-caprolactam and myristic acid, as an enhancer candidate that maintains the high skin-penetration-enhancing effect of Azone with low skin irritation. In the present study, fatty acids with different carbon numbers (caprylic acid: C8, capric acid: C10, lauric acid: C12, myristic acid: C14, and oleic acid: C18:1) were selected and used with ε-caprolactam to prepare various IL-Azones in the search for a more effective IL-Azone.

Non-viral mediated plasmid DNA transfection by electroporation (EP) is an established method for gene transfection. In this study, the usefulness of direct EP at an intradermal () site () with implanted electrodes to achieve a high protein expression level was investigated. In addition, application with various intervals with a low application voltage was also evaluated to confirm its effect on protein expression.

Compared with oral or injection administration, percutaneous immunotherapy presents a promising treatment modality for food allergies, providing low invasiveness and safety. This study investigated the efficacy of percutaneous immunotherapy using hen egg lysozyme (HEL)-loaded PLGA-PEG-PLGA nanoparticles (NPs), as an antigen model protein derived from egg white, compared with that of HEL-loaded chitosan hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride (CS)-modified PLGA NPs used in previous research. The intradermal retention of HEL in excised mouse skin was measured using Franz cells, which revealed a 2.

pH-sensitive amphiphilic diblock polyphosphoesters containing lactic acid units were synthesized by multistep one-pot polycondensation reactions. They comprise acid-labile P(O)-O-C and C(O)-O-C bonds, the cleavage of which depends on the pH of the medium. The structure of these copolymers was characterized by H, C {H}, P NMR, and size exclusion chromatography (SEC).

Background: In recent years, it has become clear that participation in social activities by the older adult suppresses their need for long-term care. Likewise, social participation can promote long-term care prevention among frail older adults who are at a higher risk of needing long-term care. However, their social participation rate is low, and the factors causing these low rates of participation are unclear.

Purpose: Hollow-type microneedles (hMNs) are a promising device for the effective administration of drugs into intradermal sites. Complete insertion of the needle into the skin and administration of the drug solution without leakage must be achieved to obtain bioavailability or a constant effect. In the present study, several types of hMN with or without a rounded blunt tip micropillar, which suppresses skin deformation, around a hollow needle, and the effect on successful needle insertion and administration of a drug solution was investigated.

Although laurocapram (Azone) significantly enhances the skin permeation of drugs, its development was hindered by its skin irritation. We then developed an Azone-mimic ionic liquid (IL-Azone), composed of less irritating cationic ε-caprolactam and anionic myristic acid. IL-Azone dissociates to the original cation and anion in the presence of water in the formulation.

Background: Athletes should be informed of their required energy intake in preparation for sports competitions. However, the environment in which dietary surveys can be conducted to determine the required energy intake for sports competitions is limited, and such survey will require a substantial amount of time and effort from athletes and dietitians. If certain biomarkers for estimating the energy intake can be identified, they may compensate for the shortcomings of these dietary surveys.

Low levels of physical activity in individuals with chronic pain can lead to additional functional impairment and disability. This study aims to investigate the predictors of low physical activity levels in individuals with chronic pain, and to determine the accuracy of the artificial neural network used to analyze these predictors. Community-dwelling older adults with chronic pain (n = 103) were surveyed for their physical activity levels and classified into low, moderate, or high physical activity level groups.

Background: The knee adduction moment (KAM) is considered an index for estimating the knee mechanical load, and increased KAM peak and KAM impulse are related to increased medial knee load and progression of knee joint degeneration. We aimed to verify the biomechanical factors of gait related to medial knee loading in patients 6 months after TKA.
Methods: Thirty-nine women who underwent TKA were enrolled.

Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) knockdown the expression of target genes by causing mRNA degradation and are a promising therapeutic modality. In clinical practice, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) are used to deliver RNAs, such as siRNA and mRNA, into cells. However, these artificial nanoparticles are toxic and immunogenic.

With regard to medical treatment through operations, remote control is possible, however, the area of remote-controllable drug treatment is yet to be established. In this study, a prototyped remote-controllable dosage management system that allows patients and caregivers to administer therapeutic drugs via an internet line without touching the dosage device or formulation was developed. This system consists of a transmitter (System A) located away from the patient, and a dosage device (System B) equipped with a receiver (B1), dosage management unit (B2), and a drug treatment unit (B3) that can be installed on the patient.

Background: In the treatment of patients with nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTM-PD), pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) has been recommended as a non-pharmacological therapy. However, no study has validated the combination of chemotherapy and PR in this context. This study investigated the effect of chemotherapy and supervised PR on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and physical function in NTM-PD patients.

Sexual reproduction involves the creation of sex-dependent gametes, oocytes and sperm. In mammals, sexually dimorphic differentiation commences in the primordial germ cells (PGCs) in embryonic gonads; PGCs in ovaries and testes differentiate into meiotic primary oocytes and mitotically quiescent prospermatogonia, respectively. Here, we show that the transition from PGCs to sex-specific germ cells was abrogated in conditional knockout mice carrying a null mutation of Smarcb1 (also known as Snf5) gene, which encodes a core subunit of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex.

Background: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have recently been considered as indicating clinical outcomes after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Although various factors are reportedly associated with post-THA and PROMs, the relationship with gait parameters, which are objective assessment factors after THA, remains unclear.
Research Question: What is the relationship between PROMs and gait biomechanical factors four weeks after THA?
Methods: Forty-five patients (six men and 39 women) who underwent THA were included.
