Scorpions are a group of arthropods known to be highly toxic to humans. We report the case of a previously healthy 61-year-old male who sustained a sting from an Androctonus crassicauda scorpion to his right eye. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) in a comatose state immediately after the sting.

This study investigates the effectiveness of chemically modified composite phase change materials in photovoltaic thermal solar energy systems and hybrid desalination systems in two municipalities, comparing their efficacy using different draw solutions for thorough comparison. The effect of non-composite Paraffin PCMs, Paraffin/CNTs Composite PCMs, and Nitrogen-doped graphene Composite PCMs on system efficiency over 96 h is investigated. The simulation under natural conditions looks at two scenarios: brackish water desalination in Irbid with tetraethylammonium bromide and seawater desalination in Aqaba with sodium chloride as a draw solution.

Background: Patients with high-risk feet and diabetes are prone to develop diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFUs). To prevent DFUs and their costs and impacts on diabetes mellitus (DM) patients' productivity and quality of life, patients' foot self-care (FSC) practices are essential to screen for DFUs. Our study aimed to assess the self-efficacy and outcome expectations about FSC and evaluate the knowledge about DFUs among patients with DM in Jordan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the genus Meliaceae, analyzing two species for their phytochemical content and anti-diabetic potential using advanced techniques like UPLC-ESI/MS and enzyme inhibition assays.
  • Researchers identified 55 metabolites, with flavonoids being the most prevalent, and found that both species effectively inhibited enzymes related to diabetes, outperforming known medications.
  • The findings suggest these species could be valuable sources of natural compounds for developing new treatments for diabetes.

Factors associated with knee osteoarthritis two years after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

J Bodyw Mov Ther

October 2024

Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), Department of Special Surgery, College of Medicine, Irbid, Jordan, P.O.Box 3030, Irbid, 22110, Jordan.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to identify factors linked to the presence and severity of knee osteoarthritis (OA) in athletes two years after they had anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR).
  • - Findings revealed that 31.7% of athletes developed medial-compartment OA and 19.5% lateral-compartment OA, with age and BMI being significant factors for both types of OA, along with injury specifics.
  • - Conclusions suggest that older age, higher BMI, and meniscus injuries are correlated with more severe medial OA, while lower sports/recreation scores and knee flexion range of motion indicate greater severity in lateral OA.

The number of birds or their total live weight in relation to a given area is known as stocking density; higher stocking densities will cause more stress to the birds, which may have an impact on their physiological state, productivity, carcass quality, growth performance, immunity, metabolism, and meat quality. The present study aimed to investigate the potential impact of 2 different stocking densities on growth performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality, serum, and expression of Insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), muscle regulatory genes expression and serum biochemical indicators of broilers supplemented with essential oils (EO). In total, 784-day-old chicks of Ross 308 were randomly assigned into 4 different groups with 7 replicates for each: Normal feed (no essential oils [EO] added) and normal stocking as 9 bird/m, (NSD).

Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT) is an online large language model that appears to be a popular source of health information, as it can provide patients with answers in the form of human-like text, although the accuracy and safety of its responses are not evident. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of ChatGPT responses to patients-based questions in ophthalmology. We collected 150 questions from the "Ask an ophthalmologist" page of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, which were reviewed and refined by two ophthalmologists for their eligibility.

The study aimed to determine differences in sagittal-plane joint biomechanics between athletes with and without knee osteoarthritis (OA) during drop vertical jump 2 years after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Forty-one athletes with ACLR completed motion analysis testing during drop vertical jump from 30 cm. Sagittal-plane peak joint angles and moments and joint contributions to total support moment (TSM) were calculated during first landing.

Blue Toe Syndrome in Behçet's Disease: A Case Report.

Am J Case Rep

June 2024

Department of General and Vascular Surgery, King Abdullah University Hospital (KAUH), Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), Irbid, Jordan.

BACKGROUND Vascular Behçet's disease (VBD) is a rare but potentially life-threatening subtype of Behçet's disease that is characterized by multisystemic vasculitis. It primarily affects males with ancestry traced back to regions along the ancient Silk Road. Both arteries and veins, regardless of size, may exhibit complications, including aneurysmal degeneration or occlusion.

Cutaneous malignant melanoma (cMM) can develop at any site, but one-third of cases primarily affect the lower extremities, with ankle and foot lesions representing 3-15% of all cases. However, cMM may become a clinical conundrum when it presents as chronic ulceration that is clinically indiscernible from other lower extremity ulcers in patients with diabetes. We present the case of a 71-year-old female patient with a longstanding history of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, chronic kidney disease and heart failure who presented to our hospital with a fungating heel ulcer.

April 2024

Department of Virology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Cairo University, Giza 12211, Egypt. Electronic address:

The global distribution of avian respiratory viruses highlights the need for effective surveillance programs and international collaboration to monitor viral circulation and implement timely control measures. In the current study, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of avian respiratory viral infections in the poultry flocks in Jordan, focusing on the major viruses involved, their epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and evolution based on viroinformatics that will be helpful to improve the diagnostic methods, and control strategies including vaccines in the region. In this research, various poultry broiler groups in Jordan experiencing respiratory symptoms were tested for respiratory viral pathogens from January 2021 to February 2022.

Brucellosis is a neglected worldwide zoonotic disease with more than 500,000 new human cases each year. Direct contact with infected animals and consumption of undercooked animal origin foods are the main routes of brucellosis transmission to humans. Although long endeavor has been applied to control and eliminate brucellosis from animal and human populations in developing countries especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the disease is still endemic in these regions.
