Introduction: Carpal tunnel syndrome results from chronic compression of the median nerve, causing pain and paresthesia, especially at night. The impact of these symptoms on patients includes disrupted sleep patterns and a desire to alleviate discomfort through hand movements. Our study aims to investigate risk factors, associations, and high-risk patient profiles associated with these nocturnal manifestations in carpal tunnel syndrome.

Factors influencing mortality in COVID-19-associated mucormycosis: The international ID-IRI study.

Med Mycol

July 2024

Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, University of Health Sciences, Gulhane School of Medicine, Ankara, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • - The COVID-19 pandemic led to a rise in cases of mucormycosis, particularly in India, prompting a study to analyze factors affecting mortality in COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) among patients in mainly Asian and some African countries.
  • - The study included 162 CAM patients, primarily older males, with a high prevalence of diabetes and rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis; results indicated a 39% mortality rate influenced by advanced age, use of rituximab, and diabetic ketoacidosis as significant risk factors.
  • - Findings suggest that surgical debridement improves survival rates, and combining antifungal treatments with surgery significantly enhances outcomes for CAM patients.

Transcatheter extraction of an intracardiac mass is a newer approach that may lead to nonsurgical treatment of complex cardiac masses. We present a case in which thrombectomy devices were combined to extract a right atrial mass, which highlights new frontiers in the treatment of complex transcatheter mass extraction. The combined use of two transcatheter thrombectomy devices (Kong and Godzilla) may provide a powerful addition to the existing armamentarium.

Heart failure (HF) is a prevalent and debilitating condition that imposes a significant burden on healthcare systems and adversely affects the quality of life of patients worldwide. Comorbidities such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), arterial hypertension, and diabetes mellitus (DM) are common among HF patients, as they share similar risk factors. This study aimed to identify the prognostic significance of multiple factors and their correlation with disease prognosis and outcomes in a Jordanian cohort.

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a common final pathway of various insults to the heart, primarily from risk factors including diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2. This study analyzed the clinical characteristics of HF in a Jordanian population with a particular emphasis on the relationship between DM and HF.

Methods: This prospective study used the Jordanian Heart Failure Registry (JoHFR) data.

Background: Anterior shoulder dislocation (ASD) is a frequently observed musculoskeletal injury that is often encountered in the context of sports activities or as a result of trauma. Several magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parameters have been previously investigated for the purpose of characterizing the anatomical features, which could potentially be responsible for the episodes of instability. These measurements have the potential to identify patients who are susceptible to dislocation.

Clofarabine Has a Superior Therapeutic Window as compared to Gemcitabine in Preclinical Bladder Cancer Models.

Eur Urol Oncol

December 2024

Center for Cancer Research and Comprehensive Cancer Center, Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria; Department of Urology, Comprehensive Cancer Center, Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria.

Current standard-of-care systemic therapy options for locally advanced and metastatic bladder cancer (BC), which are predominantly based on cisplatin-gemcitabine combinations, are limited by significant treatment failure rates and frailty-based patient ineligibility. We previously addressed the urgent clinical need for better-tolerated BC therapeutic strategies using a drug screening approach, which identified outstanding antineoplastic activity of clofarabine in preclinical models of BC. To further assess clofarabine as a potential BC therapy component, we conducted head-to-head comparisons of responses to clofarabine versus gemcitabine in preclinical in vitro and in vivo models of BC, complemented by in silico analyses.

Intracranial aneurysms are common conditions that are usually asymptomatic and found incidentally, yet they can rupture and lead to subarachnoid hemorrhage, in addition to causing mass effects, especially with larger aneurysms. Bilateral supraclinoid aneurysms are extremely rare and were reported in only two instances. These aneurysms can cause a range of symptoms and require careful management.

Echinococcal cysts (ECs) are a significant public health concern globally, particularly in endemic regions. Among these, primary retroperitoneal echinococcal cysts (PRECs) present unique challenges due to their location and complex presentations. Total cystectomy, involving complete removal of the EC and surrounding tissue, is a surgical option for managing PRECs.

In this case report, we describe two difficult intubations in which an endotracheal tube was threaded over a fiberoptic bronchoscope that was acting as a bougie. Our patients initially presented with limited neck extension, narrow mouth opening, and restricted view of the glottic region. A fiberoptic bronchoscope was guided through while the patient was oxygenated through a laryngeal mask.

Assessment of PSMA Expression of Healthy Organs in Different Stages of Prostate Cancer Using [Ga]Ga-PSMA-11-PET Examinations.

Cancers (Basel)

April 2024

Department of Biomedical Imaging and Image-Guided Therapy, Division of Nuclear Medicine, Medical University of Vienna, 1090 Vienna, Austria.

The efficacy of radioligand therapy (RLT) targeting prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is currently being investigated for its application in patients with early-stage prostate cancer (PCa). However, little is known about PSMA expression in healthy organs in this cohort. Collectively, 202 [Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 positron emission tomography (PET) scans from 152 patients were studied.

Background: Molar root canal treatment (RCT) is challenging and requires training and specific skills. Rotary instrumentation (RI) reduces the time needed for instrumentation but may increase the risk of certain procedural errors. The aims of this study were to evaluate the quality of molar RCTs provided by undergraduate students, to compare the prevalence of procedural errors following manual and RI, and to assess the students' self-perceived confidence to perform molar RCT without supervision and their preference for either manual or RI.

Curr Opin Urol

July 2024

Department of Urology, Comprehensive Cancer Center, Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria.

Purpose Of Review: Bladder cancer (BC) is a highly heterogenous disease comprising tumours of various molecular subtypes and histologic variants. Article Synopsis
  • Ingrown toenails cause significant pain and infections, prompting a study to compare two surgical treatments: wedge resection with curetting versus the same procedure followed by electrocauterization.
  • The study involved 130 patients with advanced ingrown toenails, and results showed that the second method led to lower postoperative infection rates (4.2% vs. 20.3%) and recurrence rates (4.2% vs. 25.4%) after 6 months.
  • Patients who underwent electrocauterization reported higher satisfaction rates (91.5% vs. 76.3%) compared to those who only had the initial procedure, indicating that the combined treatment is both effective and well-received.
