  • SWI/SNF complexes are multi-subunit chromatin remodelers linked to disruptions in over 20% of human tumors, with specific attention given to the SMARCD family in prostate cancer.
  • A study using immunohistochemistry on tissue samples found that SMARCD1 and SMARCD3 protein levels were significantly higher in tumor tissues compared to benign tissues, particularly in lymph node metastases.
  • While SMARCD1 did not correlate with clinical outcomes, low SMARCD3 levels were associated with increased progression to metastasis, suggesting potential roles as biomarkers in prostate tumorigenesis.

  • The study investigates the relationship between maternal diabetes and cryptorchidism (undescended testes) in Jordanian male children, as this connection has not been thoroughly explored before.
  • Over a 10-year period, data was collected from 368 children with cryptorchidism, of which 29 had mothers with gestational or type II diabetes, revealing that about 25% also had other related anomalies, predominantly genital ones.
  • The findings indicate that while there are no significant differences in treatment timelines between children of diabetic and non-diabetic mothers, diabetic mothers are more likely to have children with additional urogenital anomalies, underscoring the need for further research and better screening practices for gestational diabetes.

Background Patients' long length of stay (LOS) in the emergency department (ED) is a common measure of quality of care that could be a cause of increased morbidity and mortality. This quality improvement project (QIP) aimed to identify causes of long LOS and to improve common causes such as long consultation times. Methodology Over two months, three plan, do, study, and act (PDSA) cycles were conducted aiming to identify causes of long ED LOS and improve common causes that extended ED LOS beyond four hours.

  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) often face high mortality rates after transplantation, making hypoxia pre-conditioning a vital technique to enhance their survival and functionality.
  • Induced pluripotent stem cell-derived MSCs (iMSCs) are emerging as a promising alternative, and this study investigated how short-term severe hypoxia (1% O for 24 hours) affects their growth, viability, and differentiation.
  • The results showed that while hypoxia negatively impacted iMSCs' proliferation and viability, it might have long-term benefits for their growth and differentiation, indicating a need for further research on the effects of prolonged hypoxia recovery.

Coronary arteries normally originate from two separate cusps from the aorta, and various anomalies can occur. One such anomaly is the single coronary artery (SCA), where the coronary arteries originate from a single ostium due to the absence of the contralateral ostia. In a rare case we encountered while evaluating a patient with atypical chest pain, computed tomography angiography revealed that the right ostia was absent, and the right coronary artery originated from the left circumflex artery.
