June 2023

Joint International Research Laboratory of Information Display and Visualization, School of Electronic Science and Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing 210096, People's Republic of China.

As an emerging carbon-based material, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have shown unstoppable prospects in the field of bionic electronics with their outstanding optoelectronic properties and unique biocompatible characteristics. In this study, a novel CQD-based memristor is proposed for neuromorphic computing. Unlike the models that rely on the formation and rupturing of conductive filaments, it is speculated that the resistance switching mechanism of CQD-based memristors is due to the conductive path caused by the hybridization state transition of the sp carbon domain and sp carbon domain induced by the reversible electric field.

Planar Four-Membered Diboron Actinide Compound with Double Möbius Aromaticity.

J Am Chem Soc

April 2023

Department of Nanoscience, Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro, North Carolina 27401, United States.

The Möbius rule predicts that a planar four-membered metallacycle can be aromatic with four mobile electrons, but such a simple ring has escaped recognition because it usually favors Hückel anti-aromaticity. Here, we report that a quasi-square four-membered actinide compound (PaB) is doubly Möbius aromatic. Chemical bonding analyses reveal that this diboron protactinium molecule has four delocalized π electrons in addition to four delocalized σ electrons, satisfying the 4n Möbius rule for both σ and π components.

Asymmetric Coordination Induces Electron Localization at Ca Sites for Robust CO Electroreduction to CO.

Adv Mater

May 2023

Hunan Joint International Research Center for Carbon Dioxide Resource Utilization, State Key Laboratory of Powder Metallurgy, School of Physics and Electronics, Central South University, Changsha, 410083, P. R. China.

Main group single atom catalysts (SACs) are promising for CO electroreduction to CO by virtue of their ability in preventing the hydrogen evolution reaction and CO poisoning. Unfortunately, their delocalized orbitals reduce the CO activation to *COOH. Herein, an O doping strategy to localize electrons on p-orbitals through asymmetric coordination of Ca SAC sites (Ca-N O) is developed, thus enhancing the CO activation.

Nanotechnology

April 2023

Department of Nanoengineering, Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC 27401, United States of America.

In this work, we present a systematic design of growth experiments and subsequent characterization of self-catalyzed molecular beam epitaxially grown GaAsSb heterostructure axial p-i-n nanowires (NWs) on p-Si <111> for the ensemble photodetector (PD) application in the near-infrared region. Diverse growth methods have been explored to gain a better insight into mitigating several growth challenges by systematically studying their impact on the NW electrical and optical properties to realize a high-quality p-i-n heterostructure. The successful growth approaches are Te-dopant compensation to suppress the p-type nature of intrinsic GaAsSb segment, growth interruption for strain relaxation at the interface, decreased substrate temperature to enhance supersaturation and minimize the reservoir effect, higher bandgap compositions of the n-segment of the heterostructure relative to the intrinsic region for boosting the absorption, and the high-temperature ultra-high vacuumannealing to reduce the parasitic radial overgrowth.

Atomically Local Electric Field Induced Interface Water Reorientation for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

June 2023

Hunan Joint International Research Center for Carbon Dioxide Resource Utilization, School of Physics and Electronics, Central South University, Changsha, 410083, Hunan, P. R. China.

The slow water dissociation process in alkaline electrolyte severely limits the kinetics of HER. The orientation of H O is well known to affect the dissociation process, but H O orientation is hard to control because of its random distribution. Herein, an atomically asymmetric local electric field was designed by IrRu dizygotic single-atom sites (IrRu DSACs) to tune the H O adsorption configuration and orientation, thus optimizing its dissociation process.

June 2023

CAS Key Laboratory for Biomedical Effects of Nanomaterials and Nanosafety, CAS Center for Excellence in Nanoscience, National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, No. 11 Zhongguancun Beiyitiao, Beijing, 100190, P. R. China.

The widespread preexisting immunity against virus-like particles (VLPs) seriously limits the applications of VLPs as vaccine vectors. Enabling technology for exogenous antigen display should not only ensure the assembly ability of VLPs and site-specific modification, but also consider the effect of preexisting immunity on the behavior of VLPs in vivo. Here, combining genetic code expansion technique and synthetic biology strategy, a site-specific modification method for hepatitis B core (HBc) VLPs via incorporating azido-phenylalanine into the desired positions is described.

The synthesis and characterization of small boron clusters with unique size and regular arrangement are crucial for boron chemistry and two-dimensional borophene materials. In this study, together with theoretical calculations, the joint molecular beam epitaxy and scanning tunneling microscopy experiments achieve the formation of unique B clusters on monolayer borophene (MLB) on a Cu(111) surface. The B clusters tend to selectively bind to specific sites of MLB with covalent boron-boron bonds in the periodic arrangement, which can be ascribed to the charge distribution and electron delocalization character of MLB and also prohibits nearby co-adsorption of B clusters.

June 2023

Department of Nanoengineering, Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, North Carolina 27401, United States.

ConspectusPer- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) stand for thousands of fully/highly fluorinated aliphatic chemicals, which have been widely manufactured and used in consumer products. Due to easy deprotonation of headgroups and high strength of C-F bonds in their molecules, PFAS are water-soluble and extremely stable in our environment. Significant accumulation of PFAS in water bodies started as early as the beginning of their production in the late 1940s.

Modulation of Structural, Electronic, and Optical Properties of Titanium Nitride Thin Films by Regulated In Situ Oxidation.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2023

Department of Mechanical Engineering, North Carolina A&T State University, 1601 E Market St, Greensboro, North Carolina27411, United States.

Epitaxial titanium nitride (TiN) and titanium oxynitride (TiON) thin films have been grown on sapphire substrates using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method in high-vacuum conditions (base pressure <3 × 10 T). This vacuum contains enough residual oxygen to allow a time-independent gas phase oxidation of the ablated species as well as a time-dependent regulated surface oxidation of TiN to TiON films. The time-dependent surface oxidation is controlled by means of film deposition time that, in turn, is controlled by changing the number of laser pulses impinging on the polycrystalline TiN target at a constant repetition rate.
