Reasoning requires the ability to manipulate mental representations and understand relationships between objects. There is a paucity of research regarding the functional connections between multiple brain areas that may interact during commonly used reasoning tasks. The present study aimed to examine functional activation and connectivity of frontoparietal regions during a Matrix Decision Making Task, completed by twenty-one right-handed healthy participants while undergoing fMRI.

Background: Sexual minorities, including children, are at increased risk for adverse mental health outcomes compared to their heterosexual peers, but longitudinal studies are needed to determine the factors that explain the associations between sexual minority identification and adverse mental health outcomes during this developmental period. We examined longitudinal associations between sexual orientation and mental health over 2 years in a US cohort of children (aged 9-10 at baseline) and two explanatory factors (increased social problems such as getting teased and decreased perceived school safety). We hypothesized that beginning to identify as gay/bisexual and consistently identifying as gay/bisexual would be associated with increases in internalizing (e.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the neurocognitive effects of methamphetamine and cannabis use, finding that those who use both substances (M+C+) generally perform worse than non-users but better than those who only use methamphetamine (M+C-).
  • Participants with a history of cannabis use disorder (M-C+) showed comparable or even superior cognitive abilities compared to non-substance users, particularly in learning and memory tasks.
  • The results suggest that cannabis use may not worsen, and might even mitigate, neurocognitive deficits associated with methamphetamine use, highlighting the need for more research in this area.

Background And Objectives: Cognitive decline is an important early sign in pre-motor manifest Huntington's disease (preHD) and is characterized by deficits across multiple domains including executive function, psychomotor processing speed, and memory retrieval. Prior work suggested that the Loewenstein-Acevedo Scale for Semantic Interference and Learning (LASSI-L)-a verbal learning task that simultaneously targets these domains - could capture early cognitive changes in preHD. The current study aimed to replicate, validate and further analyze the LASSI-L in preHD using larger datasets.

Importance: With increasing medicinal and recreational cannabis legalization, there is a public health need for effective and unbiased evaluations for determining whether a driver is impaired due to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) exposure. Field sobriety tests (FSTs) are a key component of the gold standard law enforcement officer-based evaluations, yet controlled studies are inconclusive regarding their efficacy in detecting whether a person is under the influence of THC.

Objective: To examine the classification accuracy of FSTs with respect to cannabis exposure and driving impairment (as determined via a driving simulation).

Electronic address:

Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) vary in their language abilities, associated with atypical patterns of brain activity. However, few studies have examined the spatiotemporal profiles of lexico-semantic processing in ASD, particularly as a function of language heterogeneity. Thirty-nine high-functioning adolescents with ASD and 21 typically developing (TD) peers took part in a lexical decision task that combined semantic access with demands on cognitive control.

Background: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is highly prevalent and commonly co-occurs with other psychiatric disorders among Veterans. Provisional evidence supports the use of Approach Avoidance Training (AAT) - a form of computer-delivered cognitive bias modification designed to target implicit approach bias for alcohol-related cues - as an adjunctive program to treat AUD. However, the extent to which AAT is effective for improving AUD recovery outcomes in outpatient Veteran samples and those with psychiatric comorbidities has been understudied to date.

Preschool-age irritability is a transdiagnostic marker of internalizing and externalizing problems. However, researchers have generally been reluctant to examine irritability within a clinically salient framework at younger ages due to some instability during the "terrible twos" period. Developmentally sensitive and dense measurements to capture intra- and inter-individual variability, as well as exploration of developmental processes that predict change, are needed.

Background: Although the Farsi version of the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (F-EDE-Q) is frequently utilized to assess disordered eating in Iran, its factor structure, reliability, and validity have not been investigated in Iranian samples, which is the aim of the current investigation.

Method: Using convenience sampling, this study recruited 1112 adolescents and 637 university students to complete disordered eating and mental health-focused questionnaires, including the F-EDE-Q.

Results: Confirmatory factor analyses of the 22 attitudinal items in the F-EDE-Q indicated that a brief seven-item, three-factor model (i.

Objective: Posttraumatic cognitions are a mechanism of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom reduction in trauma-focused interventions for PTSD. It is unclear how changes in posttraumatic cognitions are associated with important clinical correlates of PTSD, including drinking and psychosocial functioning. This study examined if changes in posttraumatic cognitions during integrated treatment for co-occurring PTSD/alcohol use disorder (AUD) were associated with concurrent improvements in PTSD severity, heavy drinking, and psychosocial functioning.

Some evidence suggests a biphasic pattern of changes in cortical thickness wherein higher, rather than lower, thickness is associated with very early Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. We examined whether integrating information from AD brain signatures based on mean diffusivity (MD) can aid in the interpretation of cortical thickness/volume as a risk factor for future AD-related changes. Participants were 572 men in the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging who were cognitively unimpaired at baseline (mean age = 56 years; range = 51-60).

Assessing brain connectivity during rest has become a widely used approach to identify changes in functional brain organization during development. Generally, previous works have demonstrated that brain activity shifts from more local to more distributed processing from childhood into adolescence. However, the majority of those works have been based on functional magnetic resonance imaging measures, whereas multispectral functional connectivity, as measured using magnetoencephalography (MEG), has been far less characterized.

Parental and other caregiving leave is important to postdoctoral fellows, yet there is no field-wide recommendation for leave policies among clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral training programs, which is of particular relevance given the two-year requirement for eligibility for board certification. The aims of this manuscript are to (a) discuss general guidelines and recommendations for leave policies, both informed by prior empirical evidence as well as relevant existing policy guidelines from various academic and healthcare organizations, and (b) use vignettes to provide possible solutions for potential leave scenarios. A critical review of literature on family leave from public policy and political science, industrial-organizational psychology, academic medicine, and psychology was conducted and findings were synthesized.

Real-world Assessment, Prediction, and Treatment Unit, Translational Addiction Medicine Branch, National Institute on Drug Abuse Intramural Research Program, 251 Bayview Blvd., Suite 200, Room 01B340, Baltimore, MD 21224 USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Kratom is a plant product that some people in the U.S. use to help with drug problems, but there isn’t much solid information about it.
  • People who use kratom often do so to replace other drugs or to feel better without medical help, but we mostly hear about this from what they say themselves.
  • More research is needed to understand how kratom affects people, since right now we don't know enough about how it works or its risks.

The botanical product commonly called "kratom" is still relatively novel to the United States. Like other natural products marketed as supplements, kratom is highly variable, both in terms of the alkaloids naturally occurring in kratom leaves and in terms of processing and formulation. Kratom products sold in the United States are not well-characterized, nor are daily use patterns among regular users.

People with HIV now have increased longevity; however, their health-related quality of life (HRQoL) still lags significantly compared to people without HIV. Perceived stress negatively impacts HRQoL, whereas psychosocial resources are linked to better HRQoL. This longitudinal analysis aims to explore the buffering role of psychosocial resources on the relationship between HRQoL and perceived stress.

Importance: Subjective memory concern has long been considered a state-related indicator of impending cognitive decline or dementia. The possibility that subjective memory concern may itself be a heritable trait is largely ignored, yet such an association would substantially confound its use in clinical or research settings.

Objective: To assess the heritability and traitlike dimensions of subjective memory concern and its clinical correlates.
