Background Several studies have shown improved outcomes in closed compared with open medical and surgical intensive care units. However, very little is known about the ideal organizational structure in the modern cardiac intensive care unit (CICU). Methods and Results We retrospectively reviewed consecutive unique admissions (n=3996) to our tertiary care CICU from September 2013 to October 2017.

Left atrial changes in structure or function (atrial cardiopathy) can lead to AF but may impact cognition independently. It is unknown if AF or atrial cardiopathy also acts on Alzheimer disease-specific mechanisms, such as deposition of β-amyloid.

Background The impact of the new 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) hypertension guideline on dementia risk at the population level has not been evaluated. Methods and Results We studied dementia-free participants in the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) Study cohort in 1987 to 1989. Hypertension was defined by 2003 Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure and 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines using blood pressure measured at baseline.

Background Serum levels of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) are reflective of endothelial activation. Although VCAM-1 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), the prospective association of VCAM-1 with development of clinically overt heart failure (HF) across ejection fraction categories is unclear. Methods and Results In MESA (the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis), we evaluated the association of VCAM-1 at examination 2 (2002-2004) with incident HF (HFpEF and HF with reduced ejection fraction) after adjustment for cardiovascular risk factors.

Aims: The aim of this study is to analyse the causes of cardiac arrests (CA) in the emergency departments (ED) in the United States and their clinical outcomes according to whether they had a primary or a secondary diagnosis of CA.
Methods: Data from the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample was assessed for episodes of CA in the emergency department (ED) for adults from 2006 to 2014. Primary and secondary diagnoses of CA and mortality outcomes were evaluated in ED, inpatient and the combined in-hospital setting.

Introduction: Gestational weight gain (GWG) and postpartum weight retention (PPWR) are significant, potentially modifiable, contributors to women's future weight and health trajectories. There is a need for feasible and patient-centered (i.e.

We used statistical machine learning to identify important cardiac imaging and time-varying risk predictors. Methods and Results Three hundred eighty-two cardiomyopathy patients (left ventricular ejection fraction ≤35%) underwent cardiac magnetic resonance before primary prevention implantable cardioverter defibrillator insertion.

While elemene (ELE) can reverse tumor multidrug resistance (MDR), the mechanisms for ELE reversing MDR remain unclear. Numerous studies have suggested that the efflux functionality of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, not their quantity, is more relevant to tumor MDR. However, no appropriate methods exist for real-time detection of the intracellular drug efflux caused by ABC transporters , especially , which hinders the examination of MDR reversal mechanisms.

Glucose diffusion across tissue barriers is facilitated by a family of proteins including glucose transporter type 1 (Glut1). Patients are treated effectively with ketogenic diet therapies (KDT) that provide a supplemental fuel, namely ketone bodies, for brain energy metabolism.

Background high-risk genotypes are associated with increased risk for hypertension-attributed kidney disease among Black adults in the United States. Biopsy studies show differences in kidney vasculature by status; less is known about the variants' associations with systemic vascular and endothelial function. Whether risk variants are associated with blood pressure (BP) is also uncertain.

The role of natriuretic peptide levels in hospitalized obese patients with HFpEF, however, is not well defined. We sought to evaluate change in NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) levels by obesity category and related clinical outcomes in patients with HFpEF hospitalized for acute heart failure.

Elevated levels are associated with increased cardiovascular risk and inhibition with PCSK9 antibodies (PCSK9i) lowers cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery disease. PCSK9 levels are also elevated in people living with HIV (PLWH) and those with dyslipidemia.

There is growing recognition that specialists involved in caring for obstetric patients with cardiovascular disease need training in the new discipline of cardio-obstetrics. Training can include integrated formal cardio-obstetrics curricula in general cardiovascular disease training programs, and developing and disseminating joint cardiac and obstetric societal guidelines.

Background Greater physical activity (PA) is associated with lower heart failure (HF) risk. However, it is unclear whether this inverse association exists across all subgroups at high risk for HF, particularly among those with preexisting atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Methods and Results We followed 13 810 ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study participants (mean age 55 years, 54% women, 26% black) without HF at baseline (visit 1; 1987-1989).

The key obstacle in the prevention and treatment of asthma has been our incomplete understanding of its aetiology and biological mechanisms. The ras homolog family member A (RhoA) of the Rho family GTPases has been considered to be one of the most promising and novel therapeutic targets for asthma.

There are no known studies investigating gender differences in the assessment of procedural skills among emergency medicine (EM) residents, such as those required by ultrasound. The objective of this study was to determine if there are significant gender differences in ultrasound milestone evaluations during EM residency training.

The age- and sex-specific relationship of CAC with CVD and cancer mortality is unknown. Methods and Results Asymptomatic patients aged 40 to 75 years old without known CVD were included from the CAC Consortium.

We tested whether HGF expression and activity in mice with oxygen-induced ischemic retinopathy supports a role in macular edema. In ischemic retina, HGF was increased in endogenous cells and macrophages associated with retinal neovascularization (NV).
