Histological evidence suggests that the estrous cycle exerts a powerful effect on CA1 neurons in mammalian hippocampus. Decades have passed since this landmark observation, yet how the estrous cycle shapes dendritic spine dynamics and hippocampal spatial coding remains a mystery. Here, we used a custom hippocampal microperiscope and two-photon calcium imaging to track CA1 pyramidal neurons in female mice over multiple cycles.

Introduction: Telemedicine is an increasingly common form of healthcare delivery in the United States. It is unclear how there are differences in clinical performance in early learners between in-person and telemedicine encounters.
Materials & Methods: The authors conducted a single-site retrospective cohort study of 241 second-year medical students to compare performance between in-person and telemedicine standardized patient (SP) encounters.

Although grid cells are one of the most well studied functional classes of neurons in the mammalian brain, whether there is a single orientation and spacing value per grid module has not been carefully tested. We analyze a recent large-scale recording of medial entorhinal cortex to characterize the presence and degree of heterogeneity of grid properties within individual modules. We find evidence for small, but robust, variability and hypothesize that this property of the grid code could enhance the encoding of local spatial information.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, forecasting COVID-19 trends to support planning and response was a priority for scientists and decision makers alike. In the United States, COVID-19 forecasting was coordinated by a large group of universities, companies, and government entities led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the US COVID-19 Forecast Hub (https://covid19forecasthub.org).

Background: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) can restore communication in movement- and/or speech-impaired individuals by enabling neural control of computer typing applications. Single command "click" decoders provide a basic yet highly functional capability.
Methods: We sought to test the performance and long-term stability of click-decoding using a chronically implanted high density electrocorticographic (ECoG) BCI with coverage of the sensorimotor cortex in a human clinical trial participant (ClinicalTrials.
Our ability to forecast epidemics more than a few weeks into the future is constrained by the complexity of disease systems, our limited ability to measure the current state of an epidemic, and uncertainties in how human action will affect transmission. Realistic longer-term projections (spanning more than a few weeks) may, however, be possible under defined scenarios that specify the future state of critical epidemic drivers, with the additional benefit that such scenarios can be used to anticipate the comparative effect of control measures. Since December 2020, the U.

Identification of the external electromagnetic fields and internal hyperfine parameters which optimize the quantum singlet-triplet yield of simplified radical pairs modeled by Schrödinger system with spin Hamiltonians given by the sum of Zeeman interaction and hyperfine coupling interaction terms are analyzed. A method that combines sensitivity analysis with Tikhonov regularization is implemented. Numerical results demonstrate that the quantum singlet-triplet yield of the radical pair system can be significantly reduced if optimization is pursued simultaneously for both external magnetic fields and internal hyperfine parameters.

Lysyl oxidase (LOX) is a copper-binding enzyme that cross-links elastin and collagen. The dominant LOX variation contributes to familial thoracic aortic aneurysm. Previously reported murine Lox mutants had a mild phenotype and did not dilate without drug-induced provocation.

The COVID-19 Scenario Modeling Hub convened multiple modeling teams in September 2021 to project the impact of expanding vaccine administration to children 5-11 years old on anticipated COVID-19 burden and resilience against variant strains.
Methods: Nine modeling teams contributed state- and national-level projections for weekly counts of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in the United States for the period September 12, 2021 to March 12, 2022.

Purpose: The Critical Care EEG Monitoring Research Consortium (CCEMRC) is an international research group focusing on critical care EEG and epilepsy. As CCEMRC grew to include 50+ institutions over the past decade, members met to establish research priorities.
Methods: The authors used an analytical hierarchy process-based research prioritization method, adapted from an approach previously applied to a Department of Defense health-related research program.

Carbonate minerals have been detected in Jezero crater, an ancient lake basin that is the landing site of the Mars 2020 Perseverance rover, and within the regional olivine-bearing (ROB) unit in the Nili Fossae region surrounding this crater. It has been suggested that some carbonates in the margin fractured unit, a rock unit within Jezero crater, formed in a fluviolacustrine environment, which would be conducive to preservation of biosignatures from paleolake-inhabiting lifeforms. Here, we show that carbonate-bearing rocks within and outside of Jezero crater have the same range of visible-to-near-infrared carbonate absorption strengths, carbonate absorption band positions, thermal inertias, and morphologies.

Modeling system dynamics becomes challenging when the properties of individual system components cannot be directly measured, and often requires identification of properties from observed motion. In this paper, we show that systems whose movement is highly dissipative have features which provide an opportunity to more easily identify models and more quickly optimize motions than would be possible with general techniques. Geometric mechanics provides means for reduction of the dynamics by environmental homogeneity, while the dissipative nature minimizes the role of second order (inertial) features in the dynamics.

While digital health solutions continue to grow in number and in complexity, the ability for stakeholders in healthcare to easily discern quality lags far behind. This challenge is in part due to the lack of a transparent and standardized approach to validation. Evaluation of mobile health applications (apps) is further burdened by low barriers to development and direct-to-user marketing, leading to a crowded and confusing landscape.

Refined calibrations of CRISM images are enabling identification of smaller deposits of unique aqueous materials on Mars that reveal changing environmental conditions at the region surrounding Mawrth Vallis. Through characterization of these clay-sulfate assemblages and their association with the layered, phyllosilicate units of this region, more details of the aqueous geochemical history can be gleaned. A stratigraphy including five distinct mineral horizons is mapped using compositional data from CRISM over CTX and HRSC imagery across 100s of km and from CRISM over HiRISE imagery across 100s of meters.

Neurologists around the country and the world are rapidly transitioning from traditional in-person visits to remote neurologic care because of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. Given calls and mandates for social distancing, most clinics have shuttered or are only conducting urgent and emergent visits. As a result, many neurologists are turning to teleneurology with real-time remote video-based visits with patients to provide ongoing care.

Underbody blast attacks of military vehicles by improvised explosives have resulted in high incidence of lumbar spine fractures below the thorocolumbar junction in military combatants. Fracture risk curves related to vertical loading at individual lumbar spinal levels can be used to assess the protective ability of new injury mitigation equipment. The objectives of this study were to derive fracture risk curves for the lumbar spine under high rate compression and identify how specimen-specific attributes and lumbar spinal level may influence fracture risk.

The digital health industry has grown rapidly in the past decade. There will be few future aspects of healthcare untouched by digital health. Thus, the current status of the industry, the implications of companies' directions and clinical focus, and their external funding are increasingly relevant to healthcare policy, regulation, research, and all healthcare stakeholders.

The origin of the sedimentary mound within Gale crater, the landing site for the Mars Science Laboratory rover , remains enigmatic. Here we examine the total potential contribution of fluvial material by conducting a volume-based analysis. On the basis of these results, the mound can be divided into three zones: a lower, intermediate, and upper zone.
