Article Synopsis
  • Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can lead to serious lung issues like low oxygen levels and high blood pressure in the lungs, and they may involve the Nuclear Factor of Activated T-cells (NFAT) in their progression.
  • * Research indicates that Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) may inhibit NFAT activity, and the study aimed to investigate how VIP and NFATc3 (a specific NFAT isoform) are linked to the severity of IPF and COPD.
  • * Results showed a negative correlation between NFATc3 levels and lung function in IPF patients, suggesting NFATc3 activation occurs early in the disease, and a positive correlation between VIP

Clozapine-associated cardiac dysfunction during a gastroenteritis outbreak.

J Community Hosp Intern Med Perspect

December 2016

Three Village Allergy & Asthma, PLLC, South Setauket, NY, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Two young adults developed severe shock after starting clozapine for psychosis during a gastroenteritis outbreak, showing no troponin elevation.
  • One patient was diagnosed with lymphocytic myocarditis and the other with eosinophilic myocarditis, leading to the first patient's death.
  • The cases suggest that myocarditis can occur with standard clozapine doses and indicate a potential risk when combined with gastroenteritis symptoms; doctors should be cautious when prescribing clozapine under these conditions.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with increased mortality, morbidity, hospital length of stay, and costs. A quantitative urine test is available to assess the risk of developing AKI by measuring the concentrations of two protein biomarkers, TIMP-2 and IGFBP-7. The NephroCheck Test combines these concentrations into an AKIRisk Score.

Efforts to reduce health care-associated infections (HAIs) have grown in both scale and sophistication over the past few decades; however, the increasing threat of antimicrobial resistance and the impact of new legislation regarding HAIs on health care economics make the fight against them all the more urgent. On-demand polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology has proven to be a highly effective weapon in this fight, offering the ability to accurately and efficiently identify disease-causing pathogens such that targeted and directed therapy can be initiated at the point of care. As a result, on-demand PCR technology has far-reaching influences on HAI rates, health care outcomes, hospital length of stay, isolation days, patient satisfaction, antibiotic stewardship, and health care economics.
